Hi I am 17 weeks pregnant and the last couple of nights I have been waking up constantly with terrible hip pain and sometimes my shoulder/arm will really ache too. I get it depending on what side I am lying on so tossing and turning all night! Did/does anyone else have this and what can you do to relieve the discomfort? I would love to lye on my back or front but I know I can't.

I'm 29 weeks and getting leg and shoulder ache overnight. No great suggestions I'm afraid- I'm trying sleeping on the sofa wedged in with pillows so the back of the sofa supports my back and shoulders IYSWIM.

I am 25 weeks and have the same. Asked my midwife and she has sent me for physio x

I'm 21 weeks and the same. I'm guessing it's all part of the pregnancy fun?! :)

charlottesweb87 · 09/08/2013 21:38

I guess so! I am really hoping it passes soon as it's so uncomfortable. I even purchased a memory foam mattress topper as I have heard that is suppose to help but it hasn't... I can see myself having to prop myself up with pillows if it goes on much longer! Oh the joys!

Princess4eva - really? Physio? Didn't even think of that as an option! May have to contact my midwife then and see what she says.

I had a physio referral at this point - but at about 26 weeks had to go to GP for pain relief. Weirdly improved at about 34 weeks though. Still achey but not nearly as bad.

Was advised by physio to do exercises for hips (under guise of PGP) and to not lean on arms in sleeping. I also bought a mega pillow that goes under head, down front, through legs and under butt at back. I found this supported my hips loads, as kind of wedged in position. This has been the best thing for me in pregnancy! Poor DH can't get near me and I will look forward to cuddling him at night once I no longer need pillow. Good luck and hope you get sorted soon!

I get terrible hip ache in the night which wakes me up. Happily I am over 39 weeks now though so not long left. All I can suggest is a pillow between the legs- I have a Theraline and put my top leg on it to take some of the pressure off my hip. Certainly no magic answer but I think it helps a bit. The other thing I have done which I think did helps is lots of swimming. I am a terrible swimmer so it was nothing fancy but I did some undignified frog like moves under the water to try to ease my hips plus stretches which were much easier to do in the water. Good luck.

Sympathies, oreg aches and pains can be dreadful. Defo physio, you still have a long way to go! You might be able to 'self-refer'; ring up your surgery and ask. if not, see your GP. I also found relief from popping a pillow between my legs as I lay on my side to sleep, iyswim. Warm bath (these are fine, I generally aim for something not warm enough to make my cheeks pink), plenty of water (warm can be soothing).

I'm getting this too (I'm 18+4). Had such a bad night on Thursday that I got up at 2.30 and ordered a pregnancy pillow and a bump support in desperation! Will let you know if they work!

clabsyqueen · 10/08/2013 10:24

I had the same pains at about the same time, one of the long sausage pregnancy pillows really helped. Definitely worth a try. I was amazed it worked so well. Currently 40+5 and cant sleep without it.

Same here, wakes me up, and it's such a horrible pain, like someone hammering nails into my hips.

Pillow between knees, osteopath sessions and magnesium tablets are my attempts at helping.

charlottesweb87 · 22/08/2013 20:10

Thanks everyone! I have been looking it up online and a website suggested lying with my legs apart and parallel so my bump is slightly facing in towards the mattress. Well ever since I have had no pain! I just hope I can still manage this position as I get bigger!

A bit late to the thread, but recently started suffering from this at night (I'm 29+2). Went to midwife on Wednesday and she thinks its early signs of PGP so was looking for a thread on that and found this. Her advice was lots of pillows to support at night and keep an eye on it. Physio referral if it gets worse.

I've been googling support pillows and the dreamgenii pillow gets great reviews but is £45 at Mothercare! Does anyone know if it's worth it? Having been awake on and off since 2am I'd pay the money if I knew it would help!
