Maternity coat/jacket

Hi

I am trying to plan ahead a bit and wondering if it is worth buying a maternity coat or jacket. I'm due in January so will need something but could I get away with a regular jacket left open? Or will that just look ridiculous?

Thanks

I was due in jan and didn't buy a maternity coat. I either wore a normal coat open with a big long scarf so I didn't get a cold bump or a wool shawl thing.

I plan on stealing one of my DH's waterproof coats for walking my dogs as it will be big enough to zip over bump.

For other times i'll have normal jacket left open with warm scarf, or big wrap around chunky knit cardi.

Hi. I bought a maternity blazer in Next, then just wore my waterproofs open.
I was really happy with the black jersey blazer for nights out/when I had to be smarter. I think you should get one good jacket/coat in a neutral colour. You would have it for over he Christmas period and for the month or so after baby arrives.

I'm due on February and was thinking about getting a coat as I get really cold and travel by public transport so lots of hanging around platforms.

But I find it hard to justify spending ££ on a cost I'll wear for four months.

I just used dh's waterproof and I had a big wool duffle coat which wasn't maternity just a couple of sizes too big. did me 3 pregnancies plus a couple of friends and was great afterwards for fitting a baby in a sling under Smile

Have a look at Asos.com for cheap maternity wear, I got most of mine from there.

You don't really need one. If you are likely to carry your baby in a sling, it might be worth getting a babywearing coat which you can use as a maternity coat or with a baby on your front or back. The huge advantage of this is that you don't need to keep gagging around taking your baby out of a sling and adding or removing layers if you go from freezing street to boiling shop/cafe, but can just let your baby happily doze or snuggle.

I had a summer-ish maternity coat I bought in the sales and then just wore a thick cardie underneath. Lots of people just bought a big waterproof, one of those with the fleece lining, and if I'm pg again during the winter I'd do that. You can pick those sort of coats up quite cheap. And then yes, they're great for zipping up over the baby as well.

I'd have a good look around for offers, you don't want to get caught up by an awful winter and have to pay more than you want then.

I plan on buying the tesco waxed jacket (£35) in the size up. I've tried it on in a size ten (I'm normally a 6-8) and my 18 week bump has fair bit to go inside it, although my arms and knees will be drowned if I get any bigger size!
I recommend this though, it's cheap so you can afford to get the size up, its waterproof, its warm, its got a hood, it looks good! And come those last few weeks, just wear it open with a lovely big jumper.

Thanks everyone, I may try and just stick with a regular coat and a scarf for as long as I can and use DP's waterproof in the last few weeks.

I saw a really nice parka on asos but it's £70 and I really don't want to spend that much. I might see if I can get a roomy non maternity one and use that.

My employer gave us all fleece coats some time ago and they're all huge! I wore mine right through last time, and it was waterproof enough to not need any other layers.

Definately possible to get away with a normal cheap-ish coat a few sizes bigger.

Remember you're generally pretty hot when you're heavily pregnant. It's more about keeping dry i think. I was so over heated last pregnancy so im sticking with normal coat/cardis this time and a large cheap waterproof. (due Christmas)
