High platelets??

I've just seen the midwife and she said my blood test results showed high platelets and so i should have another blood test. I asked what problems this might cause and she didn't seem to have an answer. This is my first pregnancy and i'm now really worried! I've already booked the blood test in for 20th August but was wondering if anyone has any experience of this?

Thanks x

Not sure, but my platelets are low and the doc said it is common in pg due to hormones, increased fluid level etc. They want to do another blood test at 28 weeks, though i don't know why, or what they can do. Whatever you do, don't google it as you will get frightening and misleading answers; i was waiting for my second test results and googled low platelets and put sh*ts up myself; when spoke to doc he didn't seem worried, so maybe high platelets is similarly normal?

Ok thank you - i find it a bit scary that the medical professionals don't seem to actually say what problems it could cause but we have to be re-tested! Maybe i'm just worrying too much!x

I am confused. I always thought more platelets werem't a bad thing. I am (was pre-pregnancy ) a regular platelet donor and the ladies at the donor centre were always so keen to tell me how I had a really healthy platelet count.

I would be interested to know what your doc/nurse/mw say.

Yes i'm confused too! I just asked my Mum as she works at the hospital so she asked a consultant - if you have high platelet count then you're more likely to get blood clots apparently. I'll have to find out more when i have the results of the next blood test - i'll update then x

Hi I seen my midwife yesterday and was told the same thing my platelets were high :( midwife didn't know what to do so went to find out and said it can cause blood clots have to be re tested on 20th August, if mine get any higher I won't be able to have baby at mlu because of the risk, my iron had also dropped so need tablets, I did read on Internet that low iron can cause platelets to rise so maybe that's what it is, maybe give your doctor a ring and ask him that's what I'm going to do when I see him for iron tablets, not sure if this has helped

Carole803 · 08/08/2013 13:02

That does makes sense. Thanks for explaining.

Carole803 · 08/08/2013 13:03

All the best

Natale28 · 08/08/2013 13:22

My iron levels were good apparently so it can't be that for me! I'll just have to wait and see what the next results say! Hope your next results are better mamtods x

Thanks, hope so 2. Will be 36 weeks when they check them next. Had letter thus morning saying they where high but no need for concern just need them re done every month. Only got 2 months left tho. Wait an c what happens next time b4 I worry to much if they are not that concerned no need to add stress to pregnancy is there. Take care

Do not wish to cause you alarm but I have had repeatedly high platelets in my last pregnancy, in non-pregnancy & in my current pregnancy. I'm currently on aspirin as my last pregnancy ended with a FT stillbirth with clots in the placenta.

Ask about aspirin if you are still 1st trimester.

Mamtodsddonway13 · 08/08/2013 19:07

Cab I ask how high your were? Mine are 477 only have 7 weeks left so next lot of bloods will b the decider on whst they are going to do I guess

tsw · 08/08/2013 19:12

Between 499 & 425 across the many occasions.

As long as you are being monitored I wouldn't be overly concerned - I wasn't monitored.

Natale28 · 08/08/2013 19:33

Sorry to hear about that tsw. Why weren't you monitored? Mine are 409 but no-one has told me what the normal levels are - do you know?x

Under 400 is normal. No action taken until 500 though.

I wasn't monitored as it wasn't a factor that was of concern to the staff I saw even when I had a positive test for a condition that causes clots too. Don't know why I was ignored!!

Natale28 · 08/08/2013 19:46

Oh god that sounds awful - surely they should've been keeping a close eye on you. Wishing you all the best with this pregnancy x
