Fibroid and retroverted uterus discovered

Hi there,

I just had my 12 week scan. All was fine and I'm happy. The sonographer said though that I have a retroverted uterus and a small fibroid. He said not to worry but I would love someone to shed some light on what this all means... All experiences welcome!! Thanks you :)

Fibroids are not usually anything to worry about. Often they stop growing during pregnancy and rarely cause any problems.

They'll check it again at your 20 week scan and they'll have a better idea then.

I have 3 large (tennis ball sized) fibroids, which are unfortunately growing bigger. One of them is over the baby's exit, so it looks like an ELCS for me unfortunately. They're scanning me often throughout the pregnancy to make sure the baby has enough room. But according to my mw, I am an unusual case. I'm sure you'll be fine!

No idea about the uterus thing, but I'm sure the fibroid is nothing to worry about :)

Poor you. What a nuisance. Wishing you luck! Do they cause you pain? Sorry to sound ignorant but what is an ELCS? X

ELCS. is an elective caesarian. A retroverted uterus is when the womb sits towards the bowl rather then the bladder. So my cervix is in the direction of my bum...if you get me.

I've given birth 5 times. Natural vaginal births. No problems.

The fibroids are more about size, position etc. I was offered a couple of extra scans but again they caused no problems.
Im sure you'll be fine!

Good luck.

Sorry bout spelling & typos on phone!

Thanks :) everything's fine for now!

Nope, they cause no pain at all. I had no idea I had them until I had an early scan at 7 weeks.

Thank you for your messages. It sounds like I have little to worry about really, as the sonographer hinted. I was still very surprised to hear that I had anything 'abnormal!' x

Another one with a retroverted uterus here, before pregnancy mine was folded right back on itself which in medical terminology was "severely retroverted".

20% of us have this and most don't find out until pregnant or not at all- just depends if its noticed at a scan, whilst normally inherited and just different anatomy, very occasionally it happens after a pregnancy or gynae issues/ops.

I'm now 34 weeks pregnant, have heard a couple if anecdotal comments such as you're more likely to have back pain during pregnancy and often look like you're carrying smaller as it doesn't push forwards as much until later - both true in my case, but I think it's probably coincidence tbh!

The uterus may correct itself by wk 20. Mine did. No worries if it doesn't though... you can still have a normal birth
