34 week scan today to see if baby has turned. If not- what happens next?

As title states- Baby was breech at 28 weeks so have been asked to go back for a further scan today. I don't think there has been a flip and turn since 28 weeks so generally what will happen after today?

Both DS's were right position so I have never experienced this.

Depends on what sort of breech and how insistent you are on a VB, or accepting of a CS, I suppose. You still have a couple of weeks, depending on size, for the baby to possibly turn but it might not. Not many obstetricians are experienced in doing breech deliveries nowadays, and a lot depends on presentation as well, so if your baby doesn't turn in time, you'll almost certainly be looking at a CS.

There are things you can try to see if you can help the baby turn in the next couple of weeks - reflexology, acupuncture, getting into some weirdy positions regularly spinningbabies.com/baby-positions/breech-bottoms-up/305-body-work-for-breech

If anyone suggests manually turning the baby (ECV), I personally would refuse especially if it's this far ahead of delivery. Not only have I read a thread on here where it went disastrously wrong, I know someone in RL who also had a disastrous experience of ECV.
I actually had an ECV, but on the same day as delivery - I didn't want it but the consultant Obst. convinced me that it would be ok and it was - but I wouldn't have had it ahead of delivery.

Just for info purposes my dd was transverse, I had opted for an elcs due to an emcs with my ds. Two days prior to my dc's delivery she turned and went head down (mightily painful) she also weighed 10lb 9ozs, so they can turn even when large. Hope you get the delivery you are after.

Just had scan. Still breech and with feet right up by face. Waiting to see consultant now. I'm feeling really stressed about this

34 weeks is still early. There is time for baby to turn. At my hospital they don't even think about it until 36 weeks!

Me23 · 06/08/2013 15:34

A lot of babies are breech at 28 weeks it isn't good practice to offer a further scan at 34 weeks based on te position of the baby at that gestation. In fact guidelines are that Hcp should not be assessing for position before 36 weeks. If baby is breech at 36 weeks then a scan and obstetrician appt should be offered as well as an ecv and mode of delivery options discussed.

OP I've got a breech baby too, I'm 35 weeks. MW was convinced head was up when she was feeling around at my 34wk appt last week. She told me not to even worry, baby has loads of time to turn. Nevertheless I've been a bit obsessed as I loathe the idea of a CS...I've been doing the upside down stuff on Spinning Babies so fingers crossed! Can I ask you what kind of movements you've been feeling?

watchingout · 06/08/2013 16:19

My baby turned TO breech at 38 weeks so you've still got loads of time for it to turn under its own steam. I'd resist the idea of manual turning but a CS isn't the end of the world anyway. The only result you are looking for is a healthy baby and Mum

OnTheBottomWithAWomansWeekly · 06/08/2013 16:29

DD turned from breech at about week 38/39 (15 years ago) all by herself while I was in the bath (twas like a disco inside when she did it - although I didn't realise it was her actually turning till my next appointment).

They had tried manual turning the week before which didn't work, & had told me to prepare for a CS (I was very upset at the time!)

So you never know what might happen (and I didn't know anything about trying to help her turn myself by getting into particular positions)

Hope it works out for you whatever happens and you have a lovely healthy baby.

I had a poss breech at 37 weeks and was sent for a scan but was told it could still turn as late as 38 weeks or so. I'd say at 34 weeks there's still time for it to turn, so don't panic yet. I'm surprised they are worrying you about it at this stage.

I think the options are the turning thing (which I'd personally refuse), a c-section or natural delivery which they aren't keen on. Please don't worry about all that yet though. There's still time and it's better they know about a breech than have an undiagnosed one at the last minute, which I have heard happen.

I know it's a stressful thought though, it sent me into a blind panic. After mountains of midnight reading I had got quite keen on the idea of a planned c-section at 39 weeks until they told me it was head down and was business as usual!

Tiredemma · 06/08/2013 17:54

thanks all-

even Registrar just said nothing to be concerned about yet and that I should have been 'left to enjoy pregnancy' up until 37 weeks and then they would need to consider options.

It was nice to have another scan though- and I got to take DS2 in with me so it was nice for him.

My DD loved the scan too, I also had to take her. Kept talking about seeing the baby on tv! Hope the baby turns for you in the next few weeks.

Teaandflapjacks · 06/08/2013 19:34

try not to worry too much - they don't even look at you until 37 weeks in germany for breech as many turn by then. My footling breech turned after I did a load of housework - hoovering and mopping (apparently its the motion of hips etc that helps when you do that!).

Tiredemma · 07/08/2013 08:17

teaandflapjacks- just shown your post to DP.

He said "great- ill come home to a spotless house everyday between now and due date then!'

the arse!

One of my DTs turned from breech to head-down at 35 weeks - goodness only knows how!!

Tiredemma · 09/08/2013 10:31

had some bizarre movements yesterday and generally felt crap all day and uncomfortable.
I have a feeling that she may have moved slightly and is more transverse now so hopefully slowly started to 'spin around'.

Anyone tried reflexology from a trained maternity reflexologist? Might be a bit 'out there' for some, but I've known of many great stories of babies turning after treatments, so 'in for a penny...'?

Thumbwitch · 09/08/2013 16:25

I am a reflexologist and had a regular client who saw me throughout her pg - her DD was still breech at 36w and she came to see me the day before her next appt to try and turn her, or they were going to schedule her for a CS. It was an amazing treatment - and the baby started to turn while she was there, she could feel her, and we could both see her tummy changing shape! Sure enough, at the appt next day, baby was head down and stayed that way.

Pity I couldn't do it for myself - but I had other issues going on (transverse oblique unstable lie, plus polyhydramnios - DS2 had his own personal swimming pool and wasn't about to stay put!)
