Ok so I just got back from my 31week scan because im high risk and everything was fine.. they did all the measurements and told me she is quite big and now around 4.12.... when there meant to be around 3.. now im really scared im going to have a giant baby that I won't be able to push out.. has anyone else had a big baby at 31 weeks that turned out to be an average weight in the end?? I wouldn't mind but I've really watched my weight this pregnancy.

Me Smile. I was always measuring a few weeks bigger and the. Had to have a scan around thirty two weeks where I got told baby was big (cant remember exact weight but it was enough to freak me out at the time).

Baby came at 38 weeks and was 7lb 6, pushed him out alright. He is really long so must not have had much space in there !!

I did read (after my frantic googling) that growth scans at that stage are notoriously inaccurate.

Also, if it helps, a big baby is a healthy baby according to my midwife. She said they struggle less with labour, can cope if it takes a while cos they have fats stores & gravity is kinder to them on the way down.

All anecdotal but there you go!

When my friend was pregnant they put the fear of God into her about her 'huge' baby.

Apparently when they plotted her measurements (I'm guessing her girth?) on a growth chart it estimated the baby's weight would be over the 98th percentile and as a result she had a planned C-section at 39 weeks.

Anyway - when this 'huge baby' was delivered he was only 8lb - hardly big at all really Smile

I'm no expert, having never had a baby, but try not to let yourself get too anxious or worried. I'm not sure how accurate their predictions are...

With my DS they told me he was on or above the 95th percentile from about 32 weeks. I was even told in labour that he was going to be a big one. He arrived at 38 weeks weighing 8lb 4oz. Not a bad weight but certainly not massive. Better that they are checking and monitoring. My SIL had my nephew without any warnings about size, he was 10lb 9oz, he arrived naturally (ouch). Try not to worry.

I was told at 31 weeks I was on course to have a 10lb baby 'at least'. He was born 2.5 wks late at 7lbs 3. I was terrified, being 6ft2 I believed them. They can be wrong.

BabyStone · 05/08/2013 20:40

The estimated weight can be completely out by a good pound or so either way. They thought DS was going to be way over 9lb which freaked me out (barely 5foot, kept being told my build was 'tiny') but it turned out I had excess waters which made it harder to measure him properly. He was 8lb 2 in the end. My friend had growth scans as she was measuring so small, according to the print out her DS was over 7lb at 34weeks, he was born at 37weeks and was less than 7lb! Just goes to show, they can be way out.

PetraBaelish · 05/08/2013 21:17

Weight estimates via ultrasound can be out by 2 pounds (!) either way. I wouldn't give a monkey's about what they say Grin

BlackholesAndRevelations · 05/08/2013 22:12

I had a big one- over 10 lb- and he fought his way out no problem! I have heard that bigger babies are easier to give birth to because they're stronger etc. And of course they could be totally wrong anyway! don't worry Smile

CruCru · 05/08/2013 23:37

If they think your baby is big, have they got you to retake your GTT? If not, it might be worth asking.

I delivered a 9lb9oz baby naturally but have GD again so they're keeping a close eye on me now.

SupermansBigRedPants · 05/08/2013 23:53

I'm booked for induction at one day off edd as 2 growth scans and 6 midwives have all decided dd2 is huge and may go double figures eek no gd, two biggish healthy babies previously but the consultant etc don't want me to go over.

I'll try and report back next week once she's here - here's hoping she's not over 10lb or I'll be too busy recovering ShockGrin
