Anterior low lying placenta at 20 weeks, how likely is it to move???

At my 20 week scan I was told I have an anterior low lying placenta, I was not told to take any precautions, only look out for bleeding and no flying. I am now 29 weeks and have had no bleeding (I have had pain which the hospital said is fine as long as I am not bleeding and feeling the baby) I had a few questions;

  1. Could it be that it had moved as I have not had any bleeding, or one could still have a low lying placenta and not bleed?
2 . If my bump is small can that mean that it is less likely to move and the uterus stretches less?
  1. If you had it, did it move or stay??? Wink

Bleeding doesn't indicate the placenta has moved or not, it is just a potentially dangerous (but very rare) situation. So no bleeding doesn't indicate anything other than a healthy pregnancy.

I assume you have a partial placental praevia, and most of these move (mine did, and I had a small bump). You should have been offered a scan around 36 weeks to check its moved?

Please don't worry, there is nothing you can do about it.

I know of several people who have had partial praevia at the 20 weeks scan, and all have moved by later in pregnancy.

quite likely. I had this and by 34 wks all was well :-)

Most move - mine did! Didn't get any bleeding past 20 weeks either (although had some earlier in pg). I actually loved that I got to have an extra scan at 36 weeks - has really helped over this final stretch (am 39+1). Good luck OP!

I'm in a similar situation rachelmum16. Placenta is lateral (ie, to the side) and 'low'. It was noted at 20 weeks, and consultant did a sneaky quick scan in his office last week (28 weeks) and it is still low...He is sure it will move though and am being scanned again at 34 weeks. A little anxious about it all but know there's absolutely nothing anyone can do about it. Sod's law that this is the only one of my babies that is in a text-book perfect position as opposed to breech/transverse (not that this means much at this stage of pregnancy I know!).

They don't move as such as they are implanted into the wall of the womb but as the womb grows, the lower segment stretches considerably from 20 weeks onwards and therefore the placenta 'moves' away from the os. It is very common to have a low lying placenta at the 20 week scan, but relatively uncommon for it to remain low enough to cause a problem. So, 1. You can have a low lying placenta and no bleeding

  1. No, your uterus will grow in the same way as anyone elses, the size of your bump bears no relation to how well baby/uterus is growing.
  2. I have had it personally with dd2, but was well out of the way by the time I was re-scanned at 34 weeks.

As above mind was low at 20 weeks but fine when rescanned at 36

I had the same. And mine didn't move! I was so sure it would I was a bit stunned. Anyway I was immediately booked in for an ELCS and told to call as soon as there was bleeding. I had a bloody show at 38+2 and called the labour ward. Contractions began soon after so I had an EMCS (but not an emergency per se) 4 hours later. All went superbly. Baby was small but I am tiny and Asian and so he was roughly an average size for an Asian baby.

Mine was low at 20 weeks, had another scan at 32 and still low, due another scan tomorrow at 34 weeks. If it hasn't moved think they will scan again at 36 weeks and if still low admit me and deliver by c section at 38 weeks. Which really isn't what I had in mind having had a normal delivery with dc1. Hmm

I haven't had any bleeding though.

Hopefully it will move for you, most do!
