I have been suffering from bad heartburn from about 8pm onwards for the past week or so. Anything I eat sets it off, (last night it was. Watermelon. I'm really annoyed about that as its my new craving!) I've never had it before and my DP has just bought me some gaviscon (sp?) for tonight episode of heartburn! Just had a little taste and its absolutely vile!
What is this stuff?! Anyone have nicer tasting suggestions?! I've tried mints, chewies,, milk etc and no effect!
TIA xx

The double action gaviscon is much nicer, the one in the bright pink bottle. I lived on it when I was pregnant.

MrsLianeB · 03/08/2013 18:40

I take the double action gaviscon tablets they are mint flavoured as I can't handle the syrup

When I was pregnant will all 4 dds I had really bad heartburn. I went through a bottle every few days hence me buying stores own make. Was also really thick so lasted a bit longer.

No suggestions, sorry, but I'm with you - I loathe Gaviscon (tablets, not tried liquid). It makes me retch. Vile chalky pastey stuff. Bleurgh.

EmB1715 · 03/08/2013 21:56

Try ranitidine tablets!

FreckleyGirlAbroad · 03/08/2013 23:04

I had to mentally tell myself to swallow it otherwise the gag reflex kicked in and nearly made me throw it up!!! Like EmB says, the ranitidine tablets take away the need for gaviscon altogether!!!

I'm with you, I can't take it. My sister gets really bad heartburn and when I was a kid I was staying at her house and felt really sick, I'm a huge wuss with being sick so I was upset and tried a bath, she came through and brought gaviscon telling me to take some, I said "what is it? It's not one of those 'better out than in' medicines that will make me sick is it?" To which she reassured me no, I took it and 2 minutes later threw up everywhere Hmm...god knows why she even gave me any actually but yeah I can't take it now due to the memory lol Grin.

Luckily I don't really get heart burn anyway (so far that is! Fingers crossed it stays that way) so I don't need to but my MIL takes Rene (sp?) chewy tablet type things, practically daily, I never asked to be honest but I guess she must get heart burn from pretty much everything (or at least everything I ever cook for her lol!). Perhaps if medicine isn't helping (since we all agree its yuck Grin) you could try those?? I read on the box when buying some for MIL that they are peppermint flavour and I know the peppermint soft mints have helped stop my nausea so they might fix the heart burn without causing sickness Smile

Good luck Thanks

Gaviscon is my best friend at the moment. I also have the pink double action one, but the 'cool' one is okay too. It made me gag at first but I think the relief it gives me stopped that quite quickly. I now just glug it from the bottle.

Twinklestarstwinklestars · 04/08/2013 09:03

I got omeprazole tablets from my gp as gaviscon stopped working for me, they were fab.

CitrusyOne · 04/08/2013 09:05

Try rennies- much better in my opinion. Everything have me heartburn at the end of my pregnancy. Nothing could pass my lips after about 7pm....even water, otherwise I'd get raging acid.

misskatamari · 04/08/2013 09:45

I feel your pain - I had some last night which made me gag and promptly puke! Apparently drinking milk can help - I've been doing this as need the calcium too and it seems to take the edge off a bit. Gaviscon tablets have a weird texture when you chew them but seem to be a bit easier to get down than the liquid - just make sure you have a drink of water to hand as they make a weird paste in your mouth Hmm

ThedementedPenguin · 04/08/2013 09:50

I can't take gaviscon but when I was pregnant I took tescos chewable tablets. They are fantastic, work quickly and taste lovely. Maybe you could try them

WhispersOfWickedness · 04/08/2013 09:59

It is awful, I tried it twice before I decided I couldn't get past the fact that it had the consistency of semen with a taste not much better.
Eating whole almonds works though, can't remember where I got that tip from but it does work Smile

Thanks guys. Have made a "heartburn shopping list" and will try all suggestions!! A friend of mine also suggested love hearts because of the chalkiness! X

I use Maalox on my doctor's advice, you can get it without prescription (just ask the pharmacist) and it tastes much, much better than Gaviscon. It also works faster and for longer.

Carole803 · 04/08/2013 13:02

I agree it is yucky, I will try the pink one!

But don't forget you get free prescriptions and can get. Script for this yucky, but dedependable relief, over the phone from your doc.

If your practice doesn't do call backs from the doc who can leave scripts in reception, you can see them in an appt.
