Ok, so this is dc 3 and id got rid of everythin from first two as wasnt planning any more. so this time i want to buy as cheap as poss cos it will defo be last one and it seems daft to waste money on expensive items to use once.
so i have checked out ikea and they do a basic cot for 35 quid im considering. Im tall so i dont need to worry about a drop down side and this looks ok for the money.
anyone else had/have this cot and found it ok? my last one was from mothercare and was all singing all dancing and cost alot but im thinking surely a cot is a cot, no?
Or any other suggestions for cheap but sturdy cots??

We had one.it survived two dc. Does what it says on the tin!

Compact too which was helpful when space was tight.

Longfufu · 03/08/2013 13:01

I have a second hand IKEA cot, I think It's great. I just brought a nice mattress and topper.

Kelly1814 · 03/08/2013 13:16

Yes, we have the gulliver:

www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00118815/

It becomes a cot bed when needed. Like you did not want to spend a fortune, the ikea ones are all super safe and good quality, and complete bargains!

chillisbopper · 03/08/2013 14:23

I haven't a clue about ikea but I am pregnant with our first so need to buy everything and not got a huge budget at all. We just ordered ours from binxie.com as they are having a huge sale and if you enter the code First5 you will get an extra 5% off on top if it's your first order from them. The cot we have ordered is so beautiful, it's one of those sleigh designs with a drawer under and a mattress all in cost £196. I'd definitely recommend looking there while their sale is on. And you've a year for returns Smile.

We were gunna get a mamas and papas one from argos though which is a 2 piece set with matching changing table, with a mattress on top and delivery that would have been £260 but for spending over £100 they are currently giving £10 voucher so that could be handy to you. Might be worth a look as that one was just a regular cot not sleigh if the sleigh thing isn't your style Smile

We don't have an ikea cot but we do have an ikea mattress. You can get a pocket sprung one in ikea for the same price as a basic one in John Lewis. It's been fine, still firm a year on and the cover is removable for washing.

Goodkingwalkingslass · 03/08/2013 20:30

Second hand ikea cot with new mattress here and it's fine. Easy to change height and been sturdy enough for 12mo ds so far!

VinegarDrinker · 03/08/2013 20:33

We have the 60 quid Gulliver one linked to above, spent the extra because it becomes a cot bed and also because it is easy to convert to a bedside cot.

2.5 yrs on it's going strong. So much so that we bought a second one for DD (4 weeks).

JosiePosiePuddingAndPie · 03/08/2013 20:39

We had 35 quid ikea one. It was fine.

sillymillyb · 03/08/2013 20:57

I have the ikea cot bed for use at my mums - it's been fab! Makes me regret the £££ I spent on the one for my house....

scrumpkin · 03/08/2013 21:04

I had one. Loved it.

Suttonmum1 · 03/08/2013 21:17

I used £35 Ikea one when DS2 was in my bedroom. Meant I did not have to dismantle and move the larger cot bed that DS1 was then still using. It was great, if not better as had no rattley sides. Matching changing table good too.

Debs75 · 03/08/2013 21:20

I got the somnat cot which I think is the next price range up. We tried to make it a sidecar cot but that epically failed so we never really used it. DD3 preferred our bed from the start. It was a really good cot for the price and DD2 liked it but it just didn't get used so we sold it on

PotteringAlong · 03/08/2013 21:20

Yup! Still going strong for 20 month old DS - it's a great thing!

AppleCrumples · 03/08/2013 21:22

We have this (in almost same situation except we were stopping at 3 til dd2 came along Blush) its a good little cot and dd2 seems happy enough in it

TeWiSavesTheDay · 03/08/2013 21:26

We have that £35 one - I'm happy with it. Can't say what it's like for a newborn because we got it when DSs old one fell apart earlier this year, but it's certainly sturdy enough to cope with his crazy 19mo antics!

PurplePidjin · 03/08/2013 21:27

8mo ds is fast asleep in his £35 ikea cot right now! Also got one of their mattresses (the £15 seemed a bit thin so i got a better one) i like that you can take the side off to make a cosleeper if you like. We didn't but the flexibility is good :)

Not sure how a thread goes from ikea cheapies to £196 sleigh cots, that's not my idea of cheap Confused

hufflebottom · 03/08/2013 21:36

ikea cots are brill :)

VelmaDaceDinkley · 03/08/2013 22:58

Yes we bought the cheapo Ikea cot when DD broke her more expensive one by rattling the bars until they came loose Shock

The Ikea one was fine.

chillisbopper · 04/08/2013 00:36

It went to the £196 sleigh cot because the poster asked also for "any other ideas" and I wanted to let them know about the sale as they have lots of other things on sale too from like £10, so there may be other things the poster needs and the information may have helped. I thought that was the whole point of mumsnet...to share experiences when somebody asked for advice?! I'd certainly like to hear about ongoing sales that's for sure!

£196 isn't exactly my idea of cheap either but it was actually the cheapest we could find and DH and I looked around ikea first wanting to make sure that we found the best value for money, and there was no £35 basic when we went sadly. It wasn't an insult to the ikea ones, had the poster not asked for any other ideas and simply left it at only ikea I wouldn't have replied.

Also I don't presume to know what their budget or idea of cheap is since I don't know the poster.

qumquat · 04/08/2013 21:52

I know quite a few people have used the ikea gulliver as a bedside co sleeper with the side down. If any of those people are on this thread, can I ask a sneaky question? Can you use the gulliver from birth as a co sleeper or is it too big and un-cosy for a new born?

harverina · 04/08/2013 22:45

We are getting the ikea gulliver so it's good to see that other people have had good experiences with it - we have a mamas and papas set in the soon-to-be nursery but the cot-bed is huge so we are planning on having the ikea cot in our room for 6 months or so until dc2 is old enough to sleep in their own room.

We had a Moses basket for dd but she outgrew it within 9 weeks. This time we are avoiding the Moses basket and using the ikea for instead - it's not so big that it will take over our bedroom but its not so small that the baby will quickly outgrow it Grin

The only thing I would warn against with the £35 one is that if you have a section you might find it sore to bend over a cot. The only reason we are going for the more expensive one is because the mattress height can be changed. I am 5 ft 9 and dh is 6 ft 4 and its not easy leaning right over to place a baby on the lowest rung of the cot - especially when they are asleep and you want them to say asleep!!

Wonderstuff · 04/08/2013 22:51

We had the cheap IKEA one, we borrowed it from a friend, I think dd was the 5th baby to use it, at least two more babies have been in it since.

MagratGarlik · 04/08/2013 22:52

We had the £25 sniglar cot for ds1. When ds2 was due we wanted to replace the mattress, but IKEA didn't make that cot any more and sizes where weird, so they didn't make suitable mattresses either. We took in the old cot and they replaced it with their closest new cot for free and we only had to pay for a new mattress.

Would recommend. Good cots. No need to spend hundreds.

Tommy · 04/08/2013 22:56

we had one that got through 3 boys unscathed. Would recommend

KatieHalfPrice · 04/08/2013 23:00

13 month old DD is very happy in her Ikea Gulliver cot. I liked that it had 2 height levels so that I didn't have to bend right down to set her in when she was smaller, and risk waking her after spending hours rocking her to sleep Also liked that it becomes a cot bed but I fear the little heifer will have outgrown it before then if she keeps growing at the rate she is (99th centile for height)
