OK, so I just got a BFP. That would normally be fantastic but here's the problem: I've had 2 CPs before with very strong symptoms (big sore breasts, feeling very emotional, sickness). So this time round I knew what to look out for. There were no symptoms. My breasts are perfectly normal, and I tested neg CD 24 and 26 (have a 28-day cycle).

I'm having a horrible time at work (I'm handing my notice in on Monday after 2 years of bullying) and after a nasty incident on CD 28 I drowned my sorrows with way, way too much vodka. Owing to social engagements, I've also had a couple of drinks pretty much every night since CD26. I tested BFP (and proper BFP; no faint lines here), today.

Of course, I'm massively scared and stressed out that I might have done something to our baby. Having nightmares about FAS face, developmental problems.

Can anyone help me? Did anyone else make the same kind of silly mistake? Massively need reassurance!

Loads of people get very very drunk before the know they are pregnant. I found out the day after my works christmas do, that I can't entirely remember. I'm due in 2 weeks and everything has gone perfect so far.

There's no blood flow between you and the baby at this stage so I really wouldn't worry.

PoppettyPing · 02/08/2013 10:13

Don't worry! At this point the placenta isn't even established, your baby is not even feeding from you yet as far as I'm aware.

Loads of women have drank their faces off not knowing they were pregnant for far longer than you and their babies have turned out just fine! I had loads of wine in the early days and everything's good so far.

IMO stress is much more harmful in the long run to a pregnancy so make sure you take good care of yourself and good for you for quitting your horrible job! Now breathe deeply, I'm sure you'll be perfectly alright.

You'll be FINE. Have a quick search on here - many similar threads with responses from lots of ladies who drank during the 2WW and beyond and had lovely healthy babies. I drank loads before my BFP - had a very busy social calendar in those days! - and am currently feeding a very bonny bright-eyed baby girl who was 9lb at birth.
My understanding is the embryo isn't even sharing your blood stream in those early days and you'd really have to be drinking heavily throughout your pregnancy to be at risk of FSA.
Don't worry, and good luck for the rest of your pregnancy!

*FAS not FSA!

i found out i was pregnant with ds1 whilst nursing the mother of all jagerbomb hangovers. Bank Holiday weekend...tested on the tuesday!! Midwife put my mind straight to rest.

I asked my doctor, as I got pregnant just before xmas but didn't know till mid Jan. She said (i) I clearly didn't drink that much for it to be much of a concern anyway and (ii) foetus lives off of egg until placenta established, and that starts happening around 4-6 weeks, so very little if anything would reach baby anyway and (iii) millions of women conceive when drunk and (iv) far more important I take folic acid. So stop worrying!

Congratulations on your BFP! Smile

I had a particularly heavy weekend just before my BFP. DD is 4 weeks today and is perfect. Grin

It's very common and doesn't do any harm at this early stage.

your baby is still an embryo, living off the yolk sac. The placenta is not yet fully formed (it doesn't 'take over' until about 10 weeks, IIRC). Pretty useful evolutionary function I guess, in that we often don't know we're pregnant and may engage in behaviours that would be risky later on.

Honestly, it's fine, and so common.

Oh wow, thank you everyone. You are all lovely Smile I feel so relieved I could cry! Perhaps I am getting symptoms after all Grin

Guess it's just been a bit of a rollercoaster week, which is contributing to me freaking out so much. Now I feel better I can get on with looking after myself and getting excited about the news!!
