I was looking at slings after reading a fantastic thread on here.

I tried the Babasling Carrier but found it was massive even with their trial(freaky looking) baby dolls.

I also tried the Caboo which I had heard some awesome things about, however, she put it on in the straddle (baby straddling not me!!) position which I know will be great when the baby is older but I have read lots of research about how this position is very bad for the baby's hips, therefore, wanted to try it in the laying down position, similar to the babasling, however, she said that it did not go that way.

Who is right?? Me: I have seen people with it in that position and it has been recommended as good in that position. Saleswoman: No, it only goes this way??

Can anyone tell me otherwise? I am now confused and annoyed.

Many thanks

Having the baby upright is a safer position - cradle carry (where they are lying down) is not recommended as its easy for the baby's chin to end up on their chest and can obstruct their breathing. You would wear the baby upright on your chest with their legs inside, knees drawn up (froggy legged) when newborn, then legs out as they start to get a bit bigger.

Have you had a google to see if there's a sling meet near you? They can show you different types without trying to flog you anything, help you work out what will suit you best :)

I can really recommend the Connecta. I bought a Moby wrap before DD was born but never got on with it (too impatient). DH loves it but I got the Connecta instead and am still using it at 18 months.

I loved the Moby. The babasling was crap. I'm convinced it's not made for real people or babies.

For a newborn you need a sling that keeps the baby in the frog position facing inward. So their face is in you chest and their knees are bent and up either side of their tummies. When they are older they legs wrap around you.
I'm not a caboo fan they are v heavy hot fabric and mine made me sweat buckets....but the style of sling is super for babies and good positioning. I'm v confused about what the sales lady was on about though.
I had a Kali sling to start with which is a v light stretchy wrap - similar to a moby. You can get matching hats for the mobys if you are like me that's a selling point.
In all seriousness look for a sling group or library nearby you need to get someone neautral to show you all

Have a look in the slings section on here lots of threads giving advice. Also look for 'slings and things' and 'baby wearing fsot' on Facebook. ( closed sling groups) lots of help and advice with baby wearing.

Thank you all, I feel this is a mine field. I am so confused and worried. Part of me just wants to give up on the idea all together but I really wanted a wrap/sling

Don't give up because a shop assistant didn't know enough Grin
Slings are a bit of a niche thing. Unless its a specialist sling shop they won't know much. There's an online shop called love to be natural which gives a good breakdown of the different types of carrier.

Slings were hopeless with dd1 as I didn't know what I was doing but I do now with dd2 and I ditch thr buggy most of the time in favour of the ergo Grin

If by "straddling" you mean legs out in a froggy position then sales assistant was right! As a pp says, lying down like in the babasling can be dangerous as chin ends up on chest and can impact on breathing. Plus the one shoulder sling is bloody painful for the wearer after a short while.

I loved my moby but stretchy wraps are only good for small babies really; as they get stronger they can wriggle out! I think for dc 3 I will try a woven wrap as they are stronger and suitable up to toddler age.
