Mild kidney blockage found on scan

Just had our anomaly scan and baby girl has mild hydronephrosis in her left kidney (urine not draining properly to bladder). Couldn't get much info out of sonographer who just said it's nothing to worry about and I'll be scanned again at 28 weeks. Anyone else had any experience of this?

I dont have any experience of this - but i think for your own peace of mind you should see the consultant asap for a better explanation - otherwise your just going to worry.

And i wouldnt be waiting 8 weeks for a follow up scan either - id ask the consultant to refer me back for another scan much sooner.

The thing is - nhs sonographers have their hands tied as to what they are allowed to mention. Doesnt apply to private scans.

Hi my second child had this. Was told not to worry it wasn't life threatening and good that it was picked up early. It meant my ds had antibiotics from birth to prevent any urine infection and saw a kidney consultant til he was one. His blockage righted itself but there are so many options out there if it hadn't. He is now an extremely active 9 year old :) I hope this helps!

I doubt it will be a prob. Should correct itself and you'll go back for another scan to check or baby may need anti biotics after birth.

my dd has moderate hydronrphrosis, with dilated kidney but shes 4. it was only picked up this year after a scan, referred by gp after recurrent urine infections...
its thought she was born with a ureter narrowing that wasnt picked up, backlog of urine putting pressure on her kidney, and infections scarring the tube n making the blockage worse... its good that they picked this up early so it can be nipped in the bud.

at the moment, dd is under a urology specialist, on daily antibiotics to prevent more infections til its sorted. she had a renogram (scan with dye injected) to see kidney function and due for another scan soon... one kidney is draining about 2hours behind the other (which only takes a few minutes)...

as far as i know, treatment depends on the severity of the problem... with mild cases early on, theyll prob give low dose antibiotics to prevent infections and monitor it with scans... when they know the true nature of it or what issues its likely to cause, then they cn decide best kindof treatment...

theres a surgical procedure that can clear blockages, where i think they put in a stent or something to widen it, or to remove the blocked sectionof the tube... but i think they generally only use surgery if its necessary...
dd's consultant has been umming n ahhing about it for weeks, i wont find out the plans for another 2 months yet.

apparently its actually not uncommon to be born with a slight tube narrowing (so doc says) its about keeping an eye on it n seeing if the problem persists/develops... im sure bubba will be ok n well looked after Wink
