You should get an appointment with the diabetic/obstetric team fairly soon after a diagnosis, so try not to worry too much.

Different foods affect different people differently, but generally avoid obviously sugary/sweet things and limit your carb intake but have some carbs from low GI sources at each meal. So stick to wholemeal bread, potatoes in their skins or sweet potatoes, wholemeal pasta, brown rice etc as your carb sources.

Thanks so much for the reply, really really apreciate it I'm actually on holiday atm in England though. So got the call from the gp yesterday, who said the result from the gtt came back as 11.6 diabetic He said ring the midwife, it was about 5pm when I got the call last night so never had chance to call midwife Yesterday, but I will call today. Be home on Friday, so perhaps she can get me booked in with someone on Friday? It all seems a bit bewildering and scary to me atm

I felt the same yesterday although I had my GTT done at hospital yesterday and they phoned me that evening. She didn't tell me mum levels though, but booked me in for an appt tomorrow. I think today will be a long day day!

You are not alone, some lovely ladies gave me great support last night after my shock.

Here for you with hugs and will let you know how my appt goes tomorrow afternoon so you know what to expect Smile

Hiya
I'm 34 wks pg with 2nd. Had GD with DD which was diagnosed at 28 weeks. Followed a low sugar diet, combined with Metformin & DD was born (via induction) at 40+2 @ 8lbs 5oz.
This time round because of my previous history of GD & PCOS was tested early (16wks) and again diagnosed with GD. So have been on Metformin & low sugar diet for last 18wks Shock

I think it will take u a while to work out which foods you will be able to tolerate without affecting your blood sugar. I snack on things like mini snack eggs, mini sausages/sausage rolls. Bread has been replaced with crackers/ryvitas etc. I can eat as much meat & vegetables as I want along with salad etc. when choosing cooking sauces etc just check the sugar content. The key with the diet is to eat little and often and spread your meals out e.g have your main meal wait an hour or so & then have your pudding.

It may be a pain at first but you will get used to what you can & can't eat. And the best thing for me has been that in both pregnancies I've actually lost weight whilst being on the GD diet & ended up lighter after having the baby than before I got pregnant!! Bizarrely I am much healthier when pg & following the GD diet than when I'm not pg.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

You can look up diabetic recipes. They will give you a kit to measure your blood glucose (if they havent already) and you'll soon learn what does/doesn't raise your blood sugars. Everyone is slightly different. In fact, even between my two gd pregnancies there are differences between what I can and cannot tolerate. A diabetic diet is a good place to start though.

Hi we'll I spoke to the midwife and diabetic nurse today

Been booked in to collect a blood glucose monitor on mon

Then we'd I'm having a scan

Then thur I have to attend a 3 hour appointment with the diabetic team will see a dietician and an obstetrician

So I feel a bit more like I know what's happening
It's stressing me a bit that I won't see anyone till mon and I won't really be taught anything as such until thu next week

Guess I will use the mean time to try and educate myself a bit
About it all
Thanks for your help and support when I'm stuck here and panicking
Typical finding out when I'm on holiday.!

But I suppose only positive thing I can tell myself is that it's really good that it's been picked up
It must be better to be picked up and monitored than just my blood sugar being really high and me not knowing

Today I had
Water at breakfast and one small tea
One slice of whole meal toast and a haddock, was supposed to have a poached egg with it but I asked for it to be well done
But it came runny so I didn't eat the egg
So instead I had one sausage one mushroom half a tomato

Lunch I had a chicken sandwich on brown bread
And a few crisps

Dinner
Chicken bacon and avocado salad

Was going to have lasagne ,with no garlic bread and salad but was a bit worried,so had a salad instead

Had two cans of sugar free 7 up and just water

Does this sound ok? Or could I improve ? And if so where?

Trying to plan tomorrows day out
Will be having breakfast athe hotel again

Would oats be a sensible choice?

Do you think once i start testing and I'm more aware of what I can and I
Can't tolerate
I will feel less stressed about it all

?

Anyway just wanted to say thanks for the help and to update you really

I'd avoid the oats and have egg on toast (wholemeal) if possible.
What you've eaten is probably ok. It varies by person (I couldn't have the crisps for example). If you stick to the basic principles of having some low GI carbs, protein and veg with each meal you'll be fine til Monday.
Yes definitely better to know. All the risks of gd are associated with poorly controlled blood sugars - control the blood sugars and you have the same risk as a non gd pregnancy. In that sense it's one of the "better" pregnancy complications to have because you can actually do something about it.

whiteandyellowiris · 31/07/2013 22:59

I hope the hospital give me a list of.all the goods.I.can eat

And ideally.a meal plan,.telling me.what to eat when, that woild.suit.me fine
