Bad back

Hi all, I've suffered with bad lower back pain since late 2008, bought on due to stress. I have had treatment over the years, acupuncture, after drs ruled out anything actually being wrong with it and over the last 2 years its been a lot better, just the odd bad day here and there. I am 22+3 with twins and so far it has been ok................. until Saturday!

DP and step sons were all out so I thought I would take the opportunity for a nice relaxing soak in a warm bath, big mistake it seems. I was fine before I got in but as soon as I was out that was it, my lower back is ruined (!)

I've tried some of my yoga but its not eased it, I really don't want to take paracetamol as it never used to help before so don't see the point especially now I'm pg even though I've been told I can take it.

Any advice? I fear I'm going to end up with a hot water bottle on my back which will just make me hotter and annoyed Sad

Hi, i have had bad back due to prolapsed disc since 2008 and unfortunatly there really isnt much that can be done about it while pregnant. I went through my last pregnancy with this and did suffer quite alot and im expecting same again this time round (only 8 wksish).
I usually take cocodomol when not pregnant but some docs dont advice using this in pregnancy so ive cut down to the point of almost stopping and been taking paracetomol instead which barely works but is better than nothing.
I know you say this doesnt work in your case so all i can suggest is using hot water bittles and trying to keep active. I know that sounds hard when your in pain but i find if i push myself on it does ease up as the day goes on. I also swim which is good for bad backs so maybe try that.
What has your doc/mw suggested?

So being sat here at my desk isn't helping, mind you I know this already as it keep seizing up. I'm trying to walk round every so often but its not helping. I think I'm going to ask to leave early. I haven't spoken to dr or mw regarding this atm. They both know I suffer/ed bad back though. I really want to get swimming but am struggling with a costume. Maternity ones are so expensive and I can't find one supportive enough for my rather large boobs! (38G atm)

Just feeling sorry for my atm I guess Sad

I personally find sittin or lyin still for long periods does make my back seize up more, esp sitting so it prob wont be doing the world of good. I have a job where im in my feet 12 hour shifts which has its own drawbacks but still better than being immobile.
Prob best think is to take early leave if it doesnt ease up over the coming wks esp as its twins.
As for feeling sorry for yourself i can totally understand my bloody back has had me in tears on many occasions!

Osteopath? Sorted out my upper back in 3x pregnancies and made PGP bearable, if not cured it yet.

Would a gym/birthing ball help? I have just got one of these for £10 off eBay. I have always suffered from lower back/sacroiliac pain since falling from a horse years ago. I bought one of these balls and have been using it for the last two days; it definitely helps to ease the pain just sitting on it instead of the sofa- might be worth a try?

I also work at a desk and find that makes everything 10x worse so I feel your pain! I'm 29 weeks now and leaving in 5 weeks; couldn't stand it any longer I don't think.

Good luck x

Speak to your gp or midwife about getting urgently referred to physio. They will be able to provide your with a decent back support, this may help.

Regarding swimming, you could try a sports bra under a non-supportive swimsuit.

I was going to suggest sitting on a gym ball at work.
Got a maternity costume cheap on eBay but they don't seem to do them for the large boobed.

Thanks for the advice everyone Smile

I left work an hour after posting this, went home got a hot water bottle and tucked it in the back of my jeans. Then I just tried to keep mobile. Had a paracetamol at bedtime (only one as it was the extra strength type and I was worried enough as it was) It has eased up a lot which is great, although got a bit sore during the night. I'm gonna take today as it comes and if it starts hurting again I'm leaving early again.

Lucky I'm in the same job as I was all those years ago when it first started so they know I suffer from it. I'm really hoping its not going to get worse as so far with my pg its been fine (no more baths though that's for sure)

Re the gym/birthing ball that's a good idea, will look into getting one. Same with the sports bra under a swimming costume Smile

Thanks again everyone, feeling much better today. The TLC from DP probably helped a lot too Smile

A nice stretch to do at the end of the day (you have probably already done it), down on all fours. Arch back up and head down and hold for 10 seconds, then back down and head up for 10 seconds. Do for a couple of minutes till you feel loosened up.
