When does the bump stop growing??

When does the bump stop growing? And when do you stop gaining weight? ( assuming you are not scoffing several Mars Bars a day?). PLEASE PLEASE don't tell me that you keep growing until you go into labour??? I am convinced that I will explode soon and can't POSSIBLY keep growing so fast. And I was quite skinny to start with!!!!

A small logical part of my brain tells me that any cases of exploding women would be on the national news but this is being overtaken by pregnancy paranoia..................HELP!!!!!!

I was reading on one of those pregnancy calendars that from now (31 weeks) you can anticipate gaining a pound a week!

musica · 11/02/2004 13:02

Lesley, I'm afraid you do suddenly get bigger the last 6 weeks or so, when the baby is basically just doing it's growing. BUT, after about 38 weeks, lots of people don't grow any more, and may lose a little weight - my mum said that was one of the markers for when you are going into labour. Also, when the baby is engaged, it can feel more comfortable, and the bump can feel less huge. In theory!

But you really won't explode! Good luck!

I thought you had other children Lesly76...did you not grow right up to the end with them?

Fennel · 11/02/2004 13:09

I put on most between 40 and 41 weeks - about half a stone in that week, mostly due to a box of chocolate a day to drown my frustration at being late!
(again, not what you want to hear)

Lesley76 · 11/02/2004 13:20

No Fennel, not what i want to hear. But do like the sound of more chocolate.

Pie - my other kids are not my biological kids ie I didn't give birth to them. Hence this is 5th child but only second preg ( lost last baby).

So am full of opinions about buggys, care seats, parties etc and completely ( blissfully???) uninformed about late preg and childbirth!!!! Which is why I'm here picking your brains.......

Oh ok...sorry for my confusion!

Sorry to here about your loss too.

Lesley76 · 11/02/2004 13:52

Thanks Pie - our family is rather confusing, even to us!!!

Well I'm 26 weeks and have put on 2 stone already - so thats an average of 1lb a week right from the beginning.....

SofiaAmes · 11/02/2004 22:47

Lesley76, I gained over 3 stone with each of my pregnancies, most of it during the first 2 trimesters. But my bump still kept growing and growing and growing during the last month, I just redistributed the weight from somewhere else as I didn't actually gain much weight. Still was sure I was going to explode. If it's any consolation, I was skinny to start with and lost ALL my pregnancy weight within 9 months of the first pregnancy and 6 months of the second.

Lesley76 · 12/02/2004 09:38

Thank you Sofia, that IS a consolation. I was almost scared to ask about how long it takes to lose all the weight afterwards. I know it depends a bit on whether or not you Bf and for how long.

I've put on one and a half stone now (at 31 weeks) and by all accounts below should expect to put on another half stone at least!! i think i feel so huge because I put on a stone ( on purpose!!!) to try to conceive so feel so much bigger than "normal" ( I mean normal for me). When I went to GP last year to ask for advice on conceiving at my advanced age, she said put on some weight as you are underweight and have lots of sex. DH and I both followed her advice and hey presto, one of us got pregnant straight away. Perhaps another example of only following the advice you like.............

So when i moan about being so big, DH mutters that at least I will lose it afterwards!!!!

BTW I am only sharing my experience here. I have no idea if her advice is scientific or based on research or is complete rubbish!!! I'm sure that lots of MNers on the TTC thread would roll their eyes in horror at this.............

Lesley76,

I'm 31 weeks too - don't feel bad I've out on 2 stone 6lbs! - but then I have been stuffing myself silly. Last pregnancy I gained 4 stone but lost it all after 9 /10 months (mind you - this involved dieting and a strict running regime)

Lesley76 · 12/02/2004 10:23

HMC - but then if we can't stuff ourselves silly when we are pregnant....what pleasures are left to us??? Most of us are drinking very little (or not at all). If you go out for the evening you have to come home at 10pm in case you fall asleep. And when did you last see the end of a film on TV? There's all these nice foods you can't eat, like soft cheeses, peanuts, pate. If you go on a wee shopping spree you feel guilty about how much you will need that money later when your maternity pay runs out. Then there's sex.................. ( better maintain a discrete silence here..............)

So chocolate is really the only consolation isn't it???

I do sympathise, actually - I found that I couldn't feel all gorgeous and womanly, I just felt enormous (not helped by other people's comments).

But chocolate helped with that, as with so much else

Lesley76 · 12/02/2004 10:50

Twiglett - never dieted in my life. Just lost a lot of weight through stress - problems with DD1. Not to be recommended. Was below recommended BMI for height and a scrawny size 6.

Its not my appearance that bothers me as much as being so HUGE its hard to do things & get on with life. Everything seems such an effort lugging all this extra weight stuck out the front. Am normally quite a busy active person, now feel like a beached whale.

However will try the positive thinking you suggest!

Lesley,

I can sympathise with the inactivity I am normally more active and don't like sitting around lots.

I did lose all the extra weight too, in 8 months with dd1 and 15 months (too long) with dd2. it took quite a lot of exercising though and am not looking forward to having to do it again.

I was womanly (tho not gorgeous) before getting pregnant. feel neither womanly nor gorgeous now at 31 weeks. Met a 39 weeks pregnant woman yesterday and she was really really huge, reminding me it's going to get worse yet!

Bozza · 12/02/2004 12:57

I'm much less worried about the weight this time because I know I lost it last time. I but on about 4 stone then as well. I do get insecurities when people comment on it. In-laws asked me if I was sure my dates were right the other day.

But I know the feeling of frustration of not being able to get on and do everything I want. Was cleaning the other day and everytime I needed to bend over I seemed to get a Braxton-Hicks.

Lesley76 · 12/02/2004 18:59

Having just said that i don't care about my appearance..............I'm here to complain.

THIS IS RIDICULOUS! I woke up this morning and my tummy button had disappeared. Overnight!!! I don't mean it went flat - its been like that for ages. I mean its disappeared over the bump so I can only see it in the mirror. Oh this pregnancy stuff is SSSSSOOOOOOO weird!!!

You will keep growing, as soon as I had my baby I went straight down, almost flat stomach with no excess skin or stretch marks, I'm pregnant again and hoping it's the same this time round 🙏
