Would DP be able to "catch" the baby?

No idea how else to word this! A bit weird, but if I'm delivering in hospital (which I plan to do) and providing everything goes well, does anyone know if my DP would be able to be the one to "catch" our baby when he's born? Or does it have to be the midwife? Just curious, I think it would be lovely!

My husband caught DD, MW was there to assist and guide. If you ask, they should allow it providing there's no complications before/during birth.

MultipleMama · 29/07/2013 02:58

Also, MW made sure head/shoulders were out and let DH do the rest. From what I've heard MW are more laid back than consultants. However my Dr was brilliant and has agreed if I make it to full term DH can "catch" the twins with his assistance.

I caught ds2 myself, he was slippery as fuckGrin he was born in a birthing pool but was early and covered in vernix, it was like trying to hold a hairless rabbit covered in lard.

jammiedonut · 29/07/2013 05:01

Dirtymistress a WARM hairless rabbit covered in lard Smile. Put it in your birth plan and ask the midwife, as long as there's nothing untoward going on they're usually happy to, although you may find, like me, when the time comes that you're holding on to dp so tight that he won't be able to get down there in time!

Englishroses · 29/07/2013 08:16

I think some midwives may have a problem with this. Just because if anything did go 'wrong' or you ever tried to sue her for birth injuries, she would be in the position of authority and it could risk her registration. (Even if it was hubby who dropped the baby).

If its documented this may overcome this?

DevastatedD0G · 29/07/2013 08:21

I caught two of mine in the birth pool, I second the slippery hair less lard covered rabbit analogy. The other two were meconoium and declerating heart rate so I doubt (had dh even wanted to) that he'd have been allowed as they were both whisked off.

Dh cut dc1s cord and it was so horrific he never did it again Grin

Hmmm.
While catching the mw will also be trying to prevent tears, checking the cord isn't about the neck, and discretely hiding your poo. Grin

Having said that, once the shoulders are out it could be feasible depending on the mw/circumstances.

CheeseFondueRocks · 29/07/2013 09:20

God, I can't imagine anything worse.

I wanted DH to firmly stay in his seat for DD's birth and he will be commanded to do the same again.

Would you mind if your DH saw you pooing yourself?

I've had a couple ask before and I had no problem with it. Made me giggle slightly that the husband put gloves on! Grin

I bet he doesn't normally wear gloves when going down there!

meditrina · 29/07/2013 09:52

It's better to wait until the shoulders are out (because there is a risk of tearing to the neck until that point).

DaleyBump · 29/07/2013 12:51

Thanks for the replies :) I suppose we'll just wait and see what happens :)

Cheese, good point but it wouldn't actually bother me at all, I've got a funny feeling he'll be more focussed on the person coming out of my vagina Grin

Never thought about this before. DH watched DD being born and was completely fascinated. I bet he'd love to catch this one if it all goes smoothly.

Gonnabmummy · 29/07/2013 19:32

Think my dp would love this. He wants to be as involved as poss with birth from the start well as much as he can rubbing back running bath at home, cutting cord when born.
I've seen some of you have out that you caught your own in the pool. I'm planning on a water birth so was wondering if I am in the water for delivery would he be able to catch in there? I suppose it'd just be like the midwife doing it or would it be more difficult with me being in the pool?
Will question the midwife next week but if anyone has any experience would love to hear :)

VivaLeBeaver · 29/07/2013 19:35

Gonnabmummy, get your dh to pack his trunks and get in the pool with you!

Gonnabmummy · 29/07/2013 19:50

viva they aren't allowed :( we were told on the tour we had :'(
Going to talk to him tonight but hope he can if he wants too. I suppose midwife would have to lean in to catch him

Bunnylion · 29/07/2013 19:57

My DH and I asked my MW exactly this the other day.

She said as long as the birth is all going fine then there's no reason why he can't. She said that her hands will be directly under his to guide him on what to do.

mumoftwoboysS · 29/07/2013 21:24

Dirtymistress lol! I caught my DS2 as well - well it was a joint effort between DH and myself since we were OUTSIDE the bloody hospital when it happened (bloody doors to the hospital were locked since it was 3am) I don't think DH ever thought he'd have to do that! but in a nice calm environment in a hospital I think it's nice if DH wants to do it but I guess it depends how the birth goes?
