Pains and less movement

Hi guys
I just need some advice. For the past few days I have been having Braxton Hicks (first time mum and i am 26 weeks) which although uncomfortable have not been overly painful. I have spoken to my community midwife and she is happy that everything is ok. Last night the pain got worse, felt like I was being stabbed on my left hand side. Pain stopped after and hr or two.
The only problem I have is that I have not felt the baby move as much as it normally does. There is normally a gymnastics show between 8pm-midnight and last night I felt nothing. Even when I wake up I normally get a few digs in the ribs but this morning nothing.
Does anyone think I should ring the hospital midwife to get checked? I don't want to phone unnecessarily xx

Always check for decreased movement. Always. And urgently.

My firstborn had decreased movement and he was found on ultrasound scan to not be moving very much as you would expect. So I was induced and he had meconium in the waters, which they felt showed he had been in distress and we had just got to him in the nick of time.

It's possible baby could have moved into a different position where you will feel it less. I found this throughout my pregnancy. I would feel him loads one night and then the next night nothing. Especially between 26-30 weeks.

As for the pains, it could be a number of things like ligament/stretching pains or he/she could be leaning on a nerve or just in a position that is uncomfortable for you.

If it's worrying you still then definitely call up. My midwife couldn't stress the importance that no question is stupid and if I had any problems/concerns then call because that is what they're there for.

Thanks for the replies. I'm just worried because have felt baby move everyday since approx 14 weeks no matter what position he/she has been in. I will wait until had shower and breakfast as that always gets baby kicking. If no movements I will phone hospital. Thank u x

Ring maternity triage/delivery they wont think you are silly or time wasting I was always told to get any change in movement looked at they should get you in and do a trace.

Always get decreased movements checked, even if it turns out to be nothing to worry about. The hospital will be happy to check for you. Get phoning the number on your notes.

Don't wait, ring the maternity unit and ask their advice. Changed in movements (decrease or increase) should always be checked.

My baby moved more from usually being quiet and had an infection. It's not worth the risk, just call they don't mind.

JollyHolidayGiant · 28/07/2013 07:06

Hope everything's okay OP. Remember there is nothing to lose by getting checked out. They will not think you are silly.

Agree with others that you should ring urgently. Even if he starts moving again, his pattern of movement has changed and that's always been stressed to me as the thing to trigger a call. I've been in twice for monitoring, baby was fine, but midwives were adamant I'd done the right thing getting checked and had to come straight back if movements seemed different again.

Changing position / sleep patterns for baby can make the difference, so don't want to panic you, but you don't know until you check and there's nothing to be lost by ringing - midwives actively want you to. Good luck.

Hi guys
Just an update. Thank you for your replies I took your advice and went the hospital. Thankfully baby is ok. Scans show I am "all baby" and measuring 2 weeks more than my dates and I have very little fluid surrounding the baby, so in result as the baby has grown one of my ribs had been badly bruised/cracked. After being in hospital for 2 nights and now being monitored we are both fine and baby kicking away again Grin (right where it hurts!!) Just want to thank everyone again! X

Im glad you and baby are well and hope they continue to keep a close eye on you if fluid is low Flowers

NothingsLeft · 30/07/2013 22:00

That's great. Pleased you're going well Smile

bonzo77 · 30/07/2013 22:07

Are you being followed up for the low fluid? Low fluid can be related to poor placental function. Have you had a Doppler scan?

laura2323 · 30/07/2013 22:56

Bonzo. I am being monitored but baby is healthy and growing fine so midwives etc aren't too concerned. Going in every week for scans etc and see how things go!

Good. Be pushy over any concerns. Both my boys had to come early due to poor placenta function, both had decreased fluid and reduced movement. Both are very normal now, even DS2 who was 5 weeks early and spent a week on NiCU. Good luck for the rest if your pregnancy.
