Swollen feet :(

Been in the car for a few hours as we are travelling up north for a wedding, just got to hotel and looked at feet and all puffed up! Am 36 weeks tomorrow and haven't suffered with and swelling so far - should I be worried? I'm really far from home so not near normal midwife/hospital...am sitting with feet up but scaring myself over start of PE etc as just seems so sudden...or some swelling to be expected at my stage, hot weather and sitting I'm car all day? Don't seem to have much swelling elsewhere if that makes any difference....thank you in advance for any advice!

Of course if you are concerned call the nearest Maternity Ward, but I'd say it's going to be due to travelling, you've been sat with feet down and not moving, and with the heat too...

So get your feet up (maybe have a soak in the bath with feet up on the edge and eat some fancy pants hotel room service??) and some cold wrung out flannels on them which will feel lovely.

Enjoy the wedding :)

Thanks foof Smile - I guess I could give it until the morning and if still puffy after being laid in bed give them a call. Got a wedding tomorrow though and really don't relish the thought of going to a maternity dept to get checked out instead so hoping it will go away! Unfort got to meet friends for dinner in an hour and a half but will keep feel up until then. Do you think a walk will help?

Sorry you know about the wedding as I mentioned it in my OP, doh. Baby brain Blush

I'd say a walk would not help, you need to elevate them. I'm also finding that with my feet being so swollen at the end of the day due to late pregnancy and the heat too, that as soon as I lie down to sleep I am peeing loads, it's the fluid being elminated through your kidneys, so be warned you'll probably be up loaaaads in the night (8 times is my record in 5hrs!!)

islingtongirl · 26/07/2013 18:29

Ok taxi to restaurant then. Looking forward to the peeing later tonight! Don't suppose you are aso suffering insomnia like me? I seem to wake up between about 2-4am each night and can't get back to sleep....

I would try to get your feet raised even at dinner if you can, and definitely later. Mine swelled when I was pg with DS and it took ages for them to come down. Hopefully they'll be ok by the morning.

Drink lots of water and yes I think walking gently might help your circulation.

Chocolateteabag · 26/07/2013 18:33

Yes sorry - just around your room, don't go for a long walk!

islingtongirl · 26/07/2013 18:39

Thanks all. I guess I've been pretty lucky so far with symptoms, maybe I am just getting the usual joys of late pregnancy eh?!

I'm almost 40 weeks and have had really swollen feet since the weather warmed up.

Usually goes down by morning and then gets worse as the day progresses. If you have no other symptoms it'll be the heat and sitting for ages in the car.

Use a pillow to get feet elevated at night and I second wet, cold flannel/towel on feet when you get them up. It's bliss. Also will your DP give them a massage?

I went to a wedding at 37 weeks and my fee were awful by the end of the night, loads of standing about didn't help. Take a really comfy pair of flip flops/birkis for changing into. I forgot and even my most comfy wedges were to tight by evening.

Yeap another swollen feet sufferer here.
Does anyone suffer to the point that they are painful to stand/walk on?

islingtongirl · 26/07/2013 23:33

Back from dinner - still swollen! Up with flannel on them now. DH laughed at them Hmm they look all puffy and horrid. Bah. Yes they feel a bit "stuff" to walk on, basically less flexible. Thanks for tip re bringing flip flops, definitely doing that tomorrow and sitting down where I can! Hope all us swollen feet sufferers get some respite soon!

While I was pregnant & working in an office someone told me to fill an empty coke bottle (large one) with water & freeze it.
When sitting down take off shoes and roll the frozen bottle back & forth with the soles of your feet.
It feels like heaven!
Also with your legs elevated, circle you ankles 10 times each way for as long as you can manage to try & disperse the fluid

mustardtomango · 27/07/2013 01:43

I get a lot of foot swelling now (26/27 weeks), was getting really uncomfortable until it struck me to give in and get better supported shoes. One pair of (only slightly ugly) fitflops later and I literally feel like a new woman. I may never go back! Poor Dh... Grin

Woodifer · 27/07/2013 06:03

I know it's a bit hot but maternity support tights can help with this. Or even better flight socks - scholl do some nice sheer ones.

This (2nd) Preg for me much less (nearly no) swelling than last one even though weather significantly hotter. Sure it must be being more active (chasing toddler) and only sitting at desk job 3 days rather than full time.

I used to wear flight socks and sit with my feet on an up turned bin, and try walk about regularly.

Anyway boots or similar sell flight socks and I also recommend them in hospital bag for straight after birth b

islingtongirl · 27/07/2013 08:31

Thanks - may try the socks when I get back. Up this morning and still a bit swollen :( but a tiny bit better and not worse. Thinking will keep an eye on them and for any other symptoms and just mention to midwife when see her on thurs? Feel a bit melodramatic to ring up just cos of slightly puffy feet...

Glad they're no worse islingtongirl and hope they don't swell today. I'm 16wks and have been getting swollen feet for the last week or so, depending on what shoes I'm wearing, I find they shrink back after putting them up for a while.

Boosiehs · 27/07/2013 08:35

Im 36 weeks. Mine are v puffy at the end of the day after sitting at a desk or standing. Thank fuck I've finished work!! They get better overnight, but LOADS of peeing in the night. Meh.

pinkr · 27/07/2013 09:24

I was the same last week at 36 Weeks...I think out was the heat as it's stopped now. We went to an evening reception which was a two hour drive away...dh came up with the inspired idea of an insulated cool bag, some ice blocks and a wet towel. I sat in the passenger seat with my feet in the bag on to of the blocks and covered with the towel...it was bliss! Quite a deep bag so my legs stayed cool...zipped up and used again on way home. My man is a genius!
