GP aaked me to rest at home due bleeding and suggested to put 'abdomnal pain' to on letter re sick leave. this is a small team that i work with , highly competitive and nnfortunately not so friendly. i dont want pple at work to knw re pregnancy (abdominal pain being highly suggestive me being married and child bearing age...) when i m not even 8 wks and in this current unstable state. GP then changed it to 'unwell' on letter

wonder has anyone got better ideas for a discreet sign off letter that would not let pple know that u r pregnant?

Could he put "gynaecological problem" or similar that (hopefully!) won't encourage more questions? Pretty sure most managers would require more detail on a sick note than just "unwell".

Good luck with the pregnancy, hope all goes well for you.

Abdominal pain is not highly suggestive of anything. It's about the vaguest thing you can get away with on a sick/fit note!

The only way you can more vague is 'unwell' and you may struggle to get your workplace to accept that.

Keep it as abdominal pain. You want to be consistent as you may be soon telling your staff and colleagues that you are pg.

It's in your interests for your GP to be as transparent as possible on a sick note as if you need to take a lot of time off your employer cannot discriminate or start disciplinary action if it is pregnancy related.
Your manager or HR department should be professional enough not to tell the rest of your team.

What mogz said.

I'm 14 weeks pregnant and don't want anyone in work to know yet, but asked the GP to put the truth (hyperemesis) on my sick note because if I needed a lot of time off they wouldn't start disciplinary procedures (after 3 periods of sickness in a year).

I asked my manager to kind it secret and she has.

thanks everyone for valuation advice!

Champagnebubble: sorry just want to know what does pcos stand for?

in our team, we have a head of secretary (who normlly deals with annual leave/sick leave)and a head of department (i.e. the boss that i work for). our team is within a firm which has a HR department for the whole firm. silly me i am not sure whom to give sick note to, guess it the head of secretary who will then pass the note on to th HR dept for file?

I'd imagine that you can send the sick note straight to HR and let your line manager know that is where it is and when you're signed off until. Check your company handbook if you have one.
Oh, and I hope you feel better soon!

wispa31 · 24/07/2013 16:05

ditto above advice, it would be better to have your gp state its a pg related illness to cover your back re sickness absence at work, ive ended up with alot of time off firstly due to hg then hip/back pain. if i hadnt made it clear on the sick certs id have been up to hr for disciplinary action by now. also, your managers have a duty to keep personal info like this confidential.
