Booking in/bmi?

I have just booked my booking in appointment and wondered how many of you took DH/DP with you?

Also, I've seen on here women saying they've received consultant led care due to bmi/weight. Is there a set limit and when you're over that you're automatically consultant led? If so what is it?

Thanks!

Congratulations Op. Flowers

Booking in appointment is normally lots of NHS form filling, some bloods and wee sample. It was pretty much all about the forms though. Glad I didn't take DF he would have got bored.

Sorry can't help in the BMI question..

PuggyMum · 23/07/2013 20:58

I didn't take DH to my booking in as it really is just form filling and kind of boring for them.

I'm bmi 35 so had to see the consultant but it was my only tick in the risk box section so seeing them was a formality and now I'm back under midwife care and planning a home birth.

Congratulations!

andadietcoke · 23/07/2013 20:59

I didn't take DH - he would have been bored stiff and better to take the time off for scans etc.

For BMI I think if you're over 30 you get a bariatric clinic referral, if over 35 you're consultant-led, but I imagine that's dependent on your local Trust and will be different all over the country.

My booking in appointment was at home. DP was with me and I was glad tbh because the mw was asking questions regarding medical history on his side of family. I knew what conditions etc there are on his side but not as in depth as it needed to be so he needed to be there so the mw could get right info as I might have said something wrong! Also nice to have him there as we see this as OUR baby so why shouldn't he be there?!

Claire5517 · 23/07/2013 21:02

Sorry forgot to say, not sure about bmi sorry

Lovemyprincess4eva · 23/07/2013 21:21

I didn't take my DH. With the bmi its over 30 you get referred xxx

TheFalconsmistress · 23/07/2013 21:37

If you are in Scotland with a bmi of 40 or more at booking in your consultant led but i think it varies from 35 to 40 depending on area.
Mine was 38 and booking in and i was to be MW lead but I have other risks that make me consultant lead, PPH previously xxx

Sunflower1985 · 23/07/2013 21:38

Hello, my BMI was over 30 and I have an under active thyroid. Not sure which of these did it but I had consultant led care. I had 2 appointment with the consultant, an extra scan at 34 weeks and test for gestational diabetes. I was discharged after the 34 week scan.

I found it useful having DH there to help answer questions.
But it wouldn't have been strange if he wasn't. For the scans and antenatal classes everyone seemed to bring OH's.

matilda101 · 23/07/2013 21:46

My BMI is just over 30 and all I got was a leaflet about the risks! Didn't have to see a consultant with either of my pregnancies!

pinkpeoniesplease · 23/07/2013 21:54

Thanks for your replies!

Mine is around 30 so it seems to vary from area to area.

DH is off work the date of my appt so I think I'll bring him along Smile

Take DH if you can! I think it's nice for them to get a clear idea of what's going to happen in terms of your care etc. My DH comes to as many as poss (his choice and when he's not at work) but I think that's unusual. MW apps aren't worth them taking time off for though tbh.

PickleSarnie · 24/07/2013 08:15

Mine was 31 both times. Midwife led both times, didn't have to have GTT and they actively encouraged I had a home birth. Which I did for the second. Don't get consultant led until 35 here.

AntoinetteCosway · 24/07/2013 08:51

Mine was about 30 when I got pregnant with DD and I did have to have the GTT but I think that was because my DF has diabetes.

Franykins · 24/07/2013 10:16

My BMI was 31 at booking in. I was informed that it was high (I already knew this) but my midwife was happy to let me be so to speak as I had just lost 2 stone on weight watchers so she said I was well informed nutrition wise. However, as it was over 30 I was sent for an early GTT test at 14 weeks, results came back normal but the test is to be repeated at 28 weeks. What set me forward for consultant/midwife led care is the fact we found out at our 12 weeks scan we're having twins Grin this instantly changed me from a low risk pg at booking in to a high risk pg, but I don't see the consultant again until 24 weeks (2 weeks time) Having said this I've had no complications or over exaggerated symptoms that can come with multiples (so far)

Hippopotamousse · 24/07/2013 10:46

Hello, my BMI was 32 on booking in and I've had midwife led care throughout. At my booking appointment I was just given a leaflet on the risks and it was recommended that I have a GTT at 28 weeks. The GTT at 28 weeks came back fine.

It was nice to have DH at the booking appointment as he was asked a few questions about his family history which I could not have answered.

flowerpotgirl12 · 24/07/2013 12:51

I had my booking in appointment yesterday, which lasted 2 hours!! It was lots of forms and advice, bloods and urine. My DP came with me but to be honest he didn't really need to, my BMI was 36 so i have been referred for consutlant led care, although my consutlant appointment is not until the 27/11/13, and i got referred to a dietician to go through healthy eating and not gaining to much pregnancy weight.

flowerpotgirl12 · 24/07/2013 12:53

I have also been referred for a GTT but not until 28 weeks.

Franykins · 24/07/2013 14:36

How comes I had such an early GTT test then. Never mind, got me out of work for the morning Wink

Also forgot to say that my DP came with me for my first booking in app, but it was a bit of a waste of his time to be honest. The family history section we were asked to fill out at home together and then I went back the next week to complete the forms and have my bloods taken and urine tested. He has been to my consultant app and the scans, but not any more of my midwife apps. I have to be realistic as to what he can come to as he has started a new job (the week after booking in) and is still on his probation period. So we feel the scans and hospital apps are more important for him to be at than the midwife ones. And I've told him he has to come to the special twin antenatal classes, luckily he if off for one of those anyway as its half term so he has his boys who we can take to his mums for the afternoon.

pinkpeoniesplease · 24/07/2013 17:36

Thanks for you replies.

What is GTT?

I'd love a home birth but its my first and I'm not very close to a hospital so I'm not sure how they'll feel about that! Smile

PuggyMum · 24/07/2013 23:03

Gtt is the glucose tolerance test they do for gestational diabetes.

I've just discussed home birth with my midwife at 28 week check and they very much encourage it. I'd thought as I am overweight it would be a no no. But I am literally 5 mins drive from the hospital.

I just want to cover all bases. I'm fully prepared to have to go in as 50% of first time home births result in going to hospital.
