EATING!

I am only 7 weeks, but feeling sick 24/7 and have been for a week and a half or so. The only thing that makes me feel less sick is eating. All. The. Time. Specifically carbs like crackers, crisps (ready salted drool), toast etc. fruit, veg, sweet things, things with too much flavour - no thank you.

If I wait too long between eating I genuinely go from feeling sick to feeling really really sick, and then throwing up. If I eat, it keeps it at bay.

However. I already look fatter than I should. I must be eating the calories of about 5 people per day, and I am not looking like I have a little bump forming, oh no no no, I am looking like the girl who is eating all day long and feeling like I have been running a marathon (did I also mention I am KNACKERED all the time at the moment?) so I am not getting enough exercise to come close to burning any of it off.

I was not like this with my first successful pregnancy, or the two miscarriages since.

HELP do I go with the flow and turn into a blimp, or is there another option?

Hi, i'm nearly 9 weeks and my sickness started before my period was even late and got progressively worse over te following weeks. I couldn't keep much down at all and i was worried that the things i was keeping down didn't have much nutritious value. I had a Doctor appt and he said not to worry as the baby will get it's nutrition from reserves within your body at this stage. He said just to try to eat little and often rather than large meals. Not sure if that helps but thought i'd share! Oh and also my sickness is now getting better as i approach 9 weeks so hopefully your nausea may subside soon and you can go back to eating normally!

I was exactly the same from weeks 6-12 ish. Felt beyond knackered and the only thing that helped the nausea was eating carbs. I went off my usual healthy food and lived off white bread, chips, crumpets, cereal and cheese. Unsurprisingly I gained a fair bit of weight in this time but some time in early 2nd trimester the nausea passed and I got back to a fairly normal diet. I am at 31 weeks now and am probably about a stone over where I should be in terms of weight gain because of those first few months but I refuse to worry about it. I am eating well now and swimming most days - there is plenty of time to lose the weight after so it isn't worth stressing over.

If you need to eat, eat. And eat what helps the nausea. Hopefully it will pass soon.

Weird. I don't remember starting this thread.... Wink

It's perfectly normal. I would (and am) just go with it because I can do without the vomiting bile that occurs if I get too hungry.

SeriousStuff · 23/07/2013 20:47

Definitely go with it - at the early stage you just need to do anything you can to get you through. In my 1st trimester, I had one week where all I could eat were breaded/battered food and I never usually buy the stuff!

I had always said I would be super healthy if I got pregnant, but until 13 weeks, I couldn't look at fruit, vegetables or water!

Chilli81 · 23/07/2013 22:37

I think I had cheese on toast or a jacket potato and cheese every other meal with lots of carby snacks in between in the first trimester. thankfully nausea stopped at around 13 weeks and have been back to my normal relatively healthy diet since. just eat whatever makes you feel less sick for now.you won't feel like this forever. good luck getting through it Smile Smile

SaucyJack · 23/07/2013 23:21

Please don't use the 'c' word near me Chilli.

Just the thought of it toasted makes me retch.

ExhaustedMamasita · 24/07/2013 14:41

Girls - it is completely normal to eat like a pig during the first trimester. I was exactly the same. The more I'd eat, the less nauseous I'd feel. And I was always shattered! The sick feeling will pass in the next few weeks and you'll be back to eating like normal, you'll see. Good luck to you all. xx

JRmumma · 24/07/2013 14:45

Normal, just go with it and don't worry about weight gain, it will most likely even itself out and once you are feeling up to it you can get back to exercising.

Boosiehs · 24/07/2013 14:54

Try sucking on lemon flavour things.

It was about the only thing that stopped me feeling f8cking sick or wanting to eat my bodyweight in carbs.

FoofFighter · 24/07/2013 14:56

Just do what you have to to get through. I had to eat only beige bland food at first. couldn't even stomach the thought of fruit/veg/meat but it'll pass hopefully!!

knittingirl · 24/07/2013 15:34

I was the same, just do and eat what you have to and you'll be fine. I ate a ridiculous number of bags of crisps during the first trimester, but the weight gain evened out once the sickness went away and I no longer needed to mainline carbs.

The only thing other than food I found to help was sleep. Lots and lots and lots of sleep. I'm talking at least 12 hours a night.

JoinTheDots · 24/07/2013 15:58

Oh to have 12 hours... I have a toddler who only sleeps 11 herself (and no day time nap either) so at best I am getting about 8, but with the heat, less. Soooooo tired!

Nice to know I am not alone with the carb obsession though, I shall try not to worry as I munch my way through another loaf of olive bread and another 12 pack of ready salted crisps...
