When to tell work?

Hi everyone, I am relieved to be able to join this area now and leave conception behind (in the nicest possible way)

I got my BFP saturday and did a clear blue digital yesterday that confirmed I am 2-3 weeks pregnant. DH and I are over the moon as we conceived in our first cycle of trying after a pretty awful experience of gettign the mirena coil removed via hysteroscopy.

Now, my dilemma is, when to tell my manager. With DD1 I suffered quite badly from sickness, fatigue and kept fainting (particularly during morning comute), I have no idea yet how this pregnancy will go, but was wondering if I should tell her this week, just so she is aware in case I do stagger in looking like death soon/am late due to passing out on the tube etc.

What do you all think?

Only you can decide OP. I was in your place a few weeks ago, I was already stressed enough with various things going on in my life (outside of work) it was not helped when I found out my company was having to make redundancies. And then I found out I was pregnant. It was a complete shock and I wasn't happy which added to my worries. I was then actually signed off work for 2 weeks with stress related stuff, and whilst off the morning-all day sickness began. Like you, I was really sick with my DS and I didn't want to go back to work having to pretend all was good when actually I feel like rubbish. So I told her. For me it was the best thing to do (I was holding off for a bit until I could find out what was happening with the work situ). She's been very supportive and is seems genuinely concerned for my well being which comes at a time where its Been more appreciated. I know she will keep it confidential until I'm ready to share but I also know that allowances would be made if I need them. Good luck with whatever you decide, am hoping the sickness doesn't last as long as the last time as It didn't go until almost 20 weeks last time!

It's really up to you. I told my boss at 7 weeks as I'd had a few days off for morning sickness and didn't want to be making excuses, but I asked him not to tell anyone else and didn't tell the office generally until after the 12 week scan.

If you think your boss will be supportive, then there's no harm in telling now - you may get a bit of extra help/support, and they'll probably appreciate the early heads up so they can start planning. On the other hand, if you think your boss won't be pleased then you may think that it'll cause you more stress to tell.

Thank you both for the advice, I bit the bullet and told my boss, she was very pleased for me and thanked me for sharing in advance as she said she knew the first 12 weeks were usually a sensitive time. She has agreed to keep it confidential until I want to make a wider team announcement
