Is it too much weight?!

I was 11.5 stone before preg and at 17 weeks am now 12.9, more than a stone gained, 3rd preg so maybe ok? My bmi was 27 at start, I am rushing about like a mad woman ( Prob doing too much as get some wiped out tired days) but enjoying dd 1 and 2 in garden, paddle pool etc toys out. Feel more podgy on tum than was with dd2 but so far nowhere else, haven't got that comfy preggers rounded face look yet!! Had it with dd2, beach ball with legs comes to mind, am 5.4 so not v tall and seem to get bonkers big bumps and nearly 9lb babies to show for them at 39weeks.
Has anyone else gained more than a stone before 20 weeks? Am trying to watch what I eat now as have had too many dips in kids choc treats and am able to do a bit more (was in hosp early on bad kidney inf). Does breastfeeding really shift the weight?

You are doing fine and remember you are feeding your next baby up Smile

Breast feeding did help me but it is also a personal choice, I say relax and enjoy life.

A stone is a little much at this stage, considering the general advice for women of "normal weight" is to not gain more than 2 st during the whole pregnancy.

But then women put on weight differently so I think as long as you are careful now, it's not a problem.

There are weight gain calculators like this one around to give an idea how you are doing as it all depends on pre=pregnancy height and weight.

Breastfeeding didn't shift any weight for me. It made me hold on to it until DD started weaning. This happens to a lot of women. Seems like it can go either way.

Try not to worry about it too much. As long as you are doing your best, finances & time permitting, to eat a fairly healthy balanced diet. I put on well over a stone by 16 weeks with DD1 ( was slim to start with as I'd been unwell) & unfortunately ended up 4 stone heavier, after the birth, that I was before I got pg. It was all down to a pregnancy induced sweet tooth.
Remember, if you are hungry, eat things that will release energy

Remember, if you are hungry, eat things that will release energy slowly, like wholegrains, lean meat, whole fresh fruit. Not biscuits (they were my downfall).

I used this weight gain estimator which plots your gain on a graph for you.

I'm trying not to worry about it, but its hard. I'm 25+5 with my first and over the last 6, 7 weeks made a conscious effort to avoid sugary things and takeaways. I have however noticed a new layer of fat on my hips and cellulite on my thighs and bum, despite of this. I haven't weighed myself, I don't intend to until the very end of this pregnancy. I am starting to think- maybe I should just eat what I want if I'm going to gain the weight anyway.

Friends without babies love telling me about their friend who stayed super skinny and was all bump through her pregnancy.

I am concerned about losing the weight afterwards- we are planning to take the baby to see OH's family in a hot country when baby is about 5 months old. Last time they saw me, at Christmas, I was slim, and they love commenting on Skype about my weight gain. I have asked OH to tell them in advance that calling people fat in the UK is rude, and not a compliment as they apparently mean it to be! (sorry OP...... jumped on your thread for a bit of a rant then, but I do feel better).

Anyway, we are all different, and a big part of pregnancy is weight gain- moms with a bit more padding give the best cuddles anyway!!

CheeseFondueRocks · 21/07/2013 10:37

I think there is a difference between depriving yourself of good food in order not to gain weight and eating sensibly so you don't go overboard.

Stuffing yourself with whatever you want is just as unhealthy in pregnancy as it is outside of it. In fact, it's worse because it increases your babies risk for all sorts of health complications wehereas if you're not pregnant, it's just your own health.

Of course there's the odd woman who puts on 4st in pregnancy and loses it all within months, but my guess is that this is rare and it would still have all the negative effect on the baby in the womb anyway.

I also think that women who only put on bump are genetically lucky. It's normal to put fat reserves down in pregnancy. After all you're meant to feed a baby afterwards and labour is a a very exhausting experience.

What I'm trying to say is that while weight gain is a part of pregnancy, it really is not healthy to get too big and weight loss with a baby is so so much harder than without one. You will be hungry from breastfeeding (if you do), you will crave sugar and fat because you're so tired and you have no time to exercise or are not physically able to do so for quite a few months depending on any birth injuries and complications.

My problem was that I had Hyperemesis so the first months of pregnancy where defined by eating whatever I could stomach, which was mainly crap food. I ate very healthily towards the end and managed to slow my weight gain right down but for me, the biggest issue was the unhealthy stuff after the birth. I will be a lot more careful this time as I'm not genetically blessed and sadly, the state of my pelvic floor at the moment prohibits quite a few sports I was doing before, like running.

williaminajetfighter · 21/07/2013 10:49

I think you're ok. I'm 24 wks and up a stone. I gained a lot in 1st trimester as nausea meant that I ate a lot of bread and potatoes. I'm hoping ill only gain a stone more in the next 16 wks although last time I recall gaining a lot right before the birth

Just pace yourself and if you accept that it's 1 stone up to 20 wks and 1stone for the next half you'll be fine.

MummyTheresAfireBeeOnYourHead · 21/07/2013 23:01

Thanks all, I guess I'm just worried as didn't really weigh self with last two preg except for at booking in apts so maybe I should just trust bod to do what it did last two times and lose it! I did shrink back over a few months, zumba helped but dd2 only bf for 6months then wanted high chair and food like her sister! So I couldn't really tell if that helped weightloss. Bf dd1 maybe as did for a lot longer bf but first baby and younger body so got shape back quite quickly. I know I won't get too big as am very active , just should not have gone near scales to begin with! Had two nice pregs and water births but this one feels diff, two girls before so maybe a boy?? Was not this hungry with other two! But then didn't have two under five to entertain then either! Thanks cavort for link will try that out! While eating my chocs, had macdonalds lunch and Indian for dinner, yummy! (Joking obvs) Grin

im 16 weeks and I gained a stone by the time I was 13 weeks so I dont think its bad I was nine stone now im just a little over ten and still gaining weight but I couldnt care less I dont care if I end up massive as long as I get a healthy and happy baby at the end dont worry about it love ur curves even the wobbly bits haha xx

HeffalumpTheFlump · 22/07/2013 06:39

I'm 28 weeks now and found out yesterday that I have put on 9kg so far which is just under a stone and a half. The recommendation is not to put on more than 20kg (a range of 10-20 being considered normal, depending on original weight). I was really happy with 9kg until dh gave it to me in weights to hold, I was actually really shocked!! (he wasn't being mean, i just had no idea how much 9kg was) I have been told I'm having a big baby though so a lot of it is bump, but the rest is arse!

HeffalumpTheFlump · 22/07/2013 06:40

Sorry to clarify, 10-20kg over the whole pregnancy.

Rockchick1984 · 22/07/2013 08:57

Katrina the problem is that if you end up massive then there's a higher chance of complications! I gained a ridiculous amount of weight last time, am being much more careful this time as I know I was lucky that nothing went wrong (other than having lots of weight to lose after the birth!)

parttimer79 · 22/07/2013 11:34

I didn't really gain much in first 20 weeks due to puking all the time but gained loads in 3rd trimester. I'm just coming up 38 weeks and have put on 2 stone.
I was a healthy BMI pre-pregnancy and don't feel huge although I have a very big bump as I am a shortarse.
Saying that I have noticed that I've gained weight on my thighs and upper arms which was a bit disturbing but a friend who is Dr said I am laying down fat for breast feeding.

MummyTheresAfireBeeOnYourHead · 22/07/2013 13:58

Yes parttimer79 that sounds like me abit with last pregs, apart from the puking (had other horrors though!) I had a healthy bmi to begin with and am not very tall.
I realised this morn in mothercare changing rooms (horrid lighting aside...) it's not the weight as much as my tummy shape ifykwim?! Suddenly seem to have a really jelly bit (tmi sorry) under belly button and it's def not a taught bump like I had before but maybe too early and need fill out a bit more, I can't remember this stage, just the end when you get huge bump! Tummy was obv never the same after two babies although I did lose the weight so maybe I am noticing this more third (and final!) time around. To top it off I have a cold/ear ache thing starting now but at least the hot weather has eased off abit. Had no chocs since saturday, hurray!
