Newborn constipation - change formula?

I had my DD 14 days ago an she started off being BF but is now FF. since last week she has been constipated and it is heartbreaking seeing her cry in pain when having a poo. She is currently on cow and gate comfort milk (did start on cow and gate newborn) but it doesn't seem to be helping. Doctor says to go back in 10 days if she is still bad but I'm wondering if changing to a different brand of formula will help or if anyone has any suggestions of what I can do to help. Iv tried massaging her tummy and doing bicycle legs but nothing seems to help her.

You could try changing to another formula and see if it makes any difference. Do consider that it could possibly be an intolerance to cow's milk protein. My daughter had this and was fine when switched to a hypoallergenic formula. Is she fussy over milk at all? You can also give her some cooled, boiled water to help with the constipation.

I changed from SMA to aptimel as dd had something similar. She was a bit older but it made a big difference. Might be worth a try.

bizboz tried cooled boiled water too but still doesn't work. She doesn't seem fussy over her milk just constipated

Given the hot weather, she could be a bit dehydrated. Offer some plain boiled water between feeds.

If it continues to be a problem, ask the GP to give you lactulose or something similar as this should help to sort it out.

The GP did day she would prescribe lactulose but only from 4weeks

Try another brand like Hipp for the full box and see how she is.

I don't think change in milk will help. Prob just getting used to the new milk could take a bit or time, and ht weather as one poster said could be dehydrated. Apart from cool boiled water midwife suggested pure orange just diluted with cool boiled water or prune juice again diluted or even pure white grape juice diluted.

Try all the natural methods before using medication.

with one of my daughters a hot steaming bath seems to help open the Bowels in a nappy of course !

Try not to worry a solution will be found, just a lot of running between home and surgery. U mentioned gp do you speak with the health visitor at th surgery, i find they tend to have better specialist knowledge on babies and small children .

Cow and gate was awful for my ds, really upset him. We used aptamil which was fine and used prune juice to help with the constipation on the advice of a consultant.

I used aptamil and colief. My DS would only poo every 3-4 days at one point and aptamil seemed to be the gentlest on his little tummy. The doctor prescribed colief at about 3 months and that made a huge difference, I wish I had used it earlier. It is mainly for reflux and stuff, but it also has a light laxative in it, which really helped.

Our baby was constipated just after leaving the maternity unit, a midwife suggested that we try mixing 2 of his bottles each day with 50% evian water and 50% hepard water (a special bottled water for constipation). He started pooing again the next day and within a couple of days he was back to normal. We stopped the mixture after about a week and he's been fine since. I don't know if there is the same brand or something similar in the UK but you could try to Google it.
Constipation can be caused from a change in the food so changing to something else might not necessarily help.
