Why am I seeing the midwife next week...?

When I had my 20 week scan, at 18 weeks, I also had a new booking in appointment due to moving area.

I was given an appointment for the second half of 20 week scan, and an appointment with consultant on 5th August to discuss additional scanning for a genetic thing in DHs family, blood taken, the usual.

I was also told to phone GP and make an appointment with the mw for when I am about 22 weeks and to book early as they can be busy.

So I called GP and I have an appointment for Wednesday, I'll be 22 weeks on Friday. That was about as close as I could get it.

Problem is I wasn't told why I was making an appointment for 22 weeks. So I don't know what to expect. And as it's getting closer to the appointment I am feeling a bit silly about it because I don't want to go and the mw be like "how can I help you" and me be like "I don't know I was just told to see you"...

Is 22 weeks a routine time for a mw appointment? Kind of like how they book you in at about 12 weeks, do they have a purpose for 22 weeks? This is my first pregnancy so I'm sorry if that's such a stupid question lol Grin

Thanks Thanks

I'm in my third pregnancy, I saw midwife loads in my first pregnancy, can't remember exact times tho as was almost 4 years back but in this one I have only seen midwife once and I'm now 25 weeks, coz its ur first I would say its just routine as I seemed to always be there x

Futterby · 20/07/2013 21:09

I've got an appointment at 22 weeks too. No reason, just to dip my pee I think. The usual.

Stubbed · 20/07/2013 21:14

I imagine its for a check up. Check blood pressure, urine, symptoms you might be suffering from, check you don't smoke, breast feeding chat. All the things that you get at each check up.

This is my first and I had booking in around 10 wks, scan at 12 weeks, first mw apt at 16 weeks, scan at 20 weeks then second mw apt at 25 weeks. Think they are now every 3 weeks. Not much help I'm afraid but perhaps it was because your earlier one was elsewhere so this is more of a introduction? Seem to be a lot of apts compared to what we have here, have you any underlying conditions or concerns that might mean you need an extra one at 22 weeks? Maybe all areas just do it differently? Did they give you a folder at booking in as this should tell you when you have apts through the pg and what each one is for - could shed some light on it?

mamamidwife · 20/07/2013 21:17

Is it a new Gp as well?, that maybe why you have a midwife apt?
Normally you see midwife at 25 weeks & 28 weeks though.

Ipsissima · 20/07/2013 21:20

Suspect that it is just that you have not been seen by midwives in this new area, and they have stated 22 weeks, as the results of the scan will be with them by then.
Don't think it is any cause for concern ...and nice that they want to see you settled in with them properly Smile

curlywurlyllass · 20/07/2013 21:27

ive to book a 22week midwife appointment too, after the 16week one
Hth :)

I've no underlying health issues, there's just the growth scan for baby which geneticist said was more to be reassuring for me due to DHs family having ill health, which I have to see the consultant to book, hence appointment with them 5th august.

Previously I've had this:

App with mw (aprox 8 weeks) to get on their system, nothing happened (no bloods, urine, bp), just given some leaflets.

Booking in app and 12 week scan (same day at 11+5). Bloods and urine, etc.

App with mw (15+5) to arrange being on system at new GP. Did blood pressure and heart beat Smile.

New booking in app and scan (18+4) at local hospital, bloods and urine. This scan was put down as part of 20 week scan.

Now I've the appointment with mw on Wednesday and then on Friday the rest of my detailed scan. I suppose I'll have to wait and see what happens.

They can't take blood at mw appointment as all my bloods have to be done at hospital because my veins retract and they need a smaller needle.

And I didn't get a folder Sad. I live in Scotland I got a "ready steady baby" book instead which doesn't say anything about an appointment in the "week 21-22" section so it'll be a mystery until I see them again I guess Grin

I was asked by my widwife at 34 weeks whether I'd had my 2 GP appointments, I was a surprised as I didn't have any for my first pregnancy and no-one mentioned to me about it this time. She had forgotten to tell me about it apparently. The way she explained it was that GPs had always been paid by the NHS for 2 antenatal appts even though the midwives did them. From what I can see we now we have are supposed to also have the 2 GP appts so that they have to do what they're paid for - I can't see any medical reason for this just NHS bureaucracy.

If all your midwives appts are held at your GP then this could now be normal for a first pregnancy but if they are generally held/booked for elsewhere and the GP location is unusual then the above could be why....

babyhmummy01 · 20/07/2013 23:01

It will just be to register you with the community mw in your new area hun esp as maternity notes are still pen n paper so they have no history to go on. They may do bloods so they have all your levels on file. Don't worry about it

LostMySocks · 21/07/2013 09:27

I've just moved areas and had to have a full repeat booking in including bloods for testing my blood group and for rubella immunity which I've already had. The system doesn't let them transfer your notes from area to area so everything has to be done again. Got an extra chance to listen to baby's heart so not all bad

Mogz · 21/07/2013 10:11

I've got a 23 week MW appointment, she said to make it between 22 and 24, we are going to start discussing birth plans, antenatal classes and do some bloods and urine tests as I've not been well. It seems to me that in your first pregnancy it's pretty routine.

Shenanagins · 21/07/2013 10:30

It will be a routine appointment to check bloods, urine and to check on how you are keeping.

you will get an appointment for every four weeks until you hit the 38 week mark and then it will go to weekly.

at the 40 week mark they will start to talk about booking you in to be induced at the 42 week mark which is just as a precaution as they don't like to go down this route.

booksandchoc · 21/07/2013 10:35

It is your first routine appt. I'm in Scotland too, I got routine appts at 22w, 28w, 34, 36, 38 & 40. Normally the hospital doing your 12 scan keeps your notes and you pick them up at about 15/18 weeks again. I would ask about them because you should have them by now!
