Hubby and I went into mamas & papas today "for a look" and ended up buying a cot and changing table. I was really excited about getting them (it's our first baby purchase apart from a book of baby names!) but just spoken to my mum and her first response was it's far too early! I'm only 14 weeks so I know its early, but at the same time we want to give ourselves plenty of time to pay things off and they were in the sale so better to get them now that in a month or two when full price is almost double what we paid today. She's got me feeling like we're tempting fate now though, did anyone else start getting the big stuff this early on?

It is very early but I don't think you are tempting fate. Unfortunately things do go wrong in pregnancy after the crucial 12 week mark and its not as rare as you think but they will go wrong wether you buy things or not if that is the path it's destined to take! I think most people leave it until after the 20 week mark but try not to worry yourselves! Just maybe hold off a little longer on buying too many big items.

chillisbopper · 20/07/2013 16:49

I'm 21 weeks and we've bought nothing besides a teddy that DH the day we got BFP.

I honestly wish we'd started earlier, I wanted to start after 12 week scan but a combination of DH starting new job and us moving house left us unable to. We are buying cot and changer at the end of this month on pay day though Smile.

I don't believe buying things will tempt fate, what's meant to be will be and we can't change that by doing or not doing something. If you feel happy and comfortable buying earlier then do it, you could do without the stress of trying to budget it all in too late in the day. We have 4 more pay days until due date and still got bills to pay as well as nursery things needed!

beth27123 · 20/07/2013 16:58

We started after an early scan, on the basis things were going to be financially tough and it was better to start early in our situation. Had something gone wrong we would have been devastated but it was the best thing we could do for us and our future baby.

Anothermrssmith · 20/07/2013 17:04

I know really that if somethings going to happen it will happen regardless, I suppose she's just taken the shine of it for me! It's more for financial reasons that we bought now, we're lucky in that we both have good jobs and while we're not rolling in money we don't live hand to mouth either but if we can get it now, while it's cheaper, and spread the cost for longer that makes more sense to us. For the same reason you don't do all your xmas shopping with your November wages we're not going to do all our baby shopping from our December wages (Jan due date)

We bought things almost as soon as we found and we given absolutely loads. I am not the suspicious type and see no problem with it at all. One woman did make a silly comment at work saying I couldn't as it was bad luck. Which makes me very Angry because its almost as if they would blame you for buying something if anything was to happen which is ridiculous. Also I was born at 32 weeks and my friend recently gave birth at 30 weeks some people have nothing by this stage or very little and the thought of that makes me panic! I'm 34+3 now and have had everything apart from curtains which we got yesterday for a while! It's nice to know there's nothing to rush for or save for just wait for him to be here :)

katrinaxx · 20/07/2013 18:06

Im 16 weeks and I started buying stuff when I was 14 weeks its not for financial reasons I was just excited someone said to me in the shop it was to early and I burst in to tears and told them to stop pissing on my chips lol do whatever you want to do its surposed to be a exciting time ignore everyone else good luck I hope you have a fantastic pregnancy and a happy healthy baby at the end xx

SadPander · 20/07/2013 18:11

We've bought a mamas and papas travel system from ebay as it was £200 rather than £900 new (and that's in their sale!) I'm 18 weeks and didn't plan to buy anything before 20 week scan - not because its tempting fate as I don't believe in that, but I would have rather waited as I think it will be very odd having baby stuff around the house if anything does come up at the 20 week scan or go wrong.

I'm glad we've bought it though as it has saved us so much money and was too good to pass up. I do know people who have been to the 20 week scan with nursery fully decorated and stocked already, so just depends what your comfortable with.

maggiethemagpie · 20/07/2013 18:11

I think if stuff is in the sale it's worth buying it now at reduced price. I've bought loads of baby clothes in the sales recently - I try not to buy anything full price.

LittlePeaPod · 20/07/2013 18:12

I am 16+2 and DF and I bought a cot, some baby furniture, a pram and car seat last week.. Really exciting and I went and bought a little baby grow and bottle warmer etc. today... Really exciting again..

I think if you find something you love then go for it... Congratulations Op. Flowers

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 20/07/2013 18:16

Not until I was 6mths.

MrsSpencerReid · 20/07/2013 18:19

I ordered our pram from m&p in the sale at 12w, however we got it on the scheme were you pay over a few months and were told if we changed our mind before it was delivered we would get every penny back so it didn't seem silly to me at all Smile

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 20/07/2013 18:29

Buy as early as you like. Yes, bad things can happen but they're not going to happen because you spent £500 at Mothercare this weekend or whatever other guff people are spouting. All this tempting fate stuff is ridiculous!

One tip I'd pass on is try and buy the big stuff during the 2nd semester when you have the energy and stamina to trek around the shops. By 38 weeks you won't want to be standing around in John Lewis or wherever comparing prams, trust me!

I'd also sign up to the various Mothercare, Mamas and Papas, JojomamanBebe and so on websites. 2 yrs ago when PG with DD, I used to have a quick look every Friday night when the new offers were released/sale pages updated and invariably order something on my list for half price.

This time round (PG again) we have a lot of stuff already, have been given lots more and so I don't have too much to buy. I'll probably just order online as I have a pretty good idea of what I want and don't want to drag toddler DD around more shops than necessary.

We didn't get anything until around 24w as I was too sick to function, except a few little items that my DD wanted to buy in a sale, bless her. Oh, and a mini set around 18w from a dear friend who couldn't resist.

Got the new cot around 30w and then sorted the clothes from storage and bought what was still needed about 32w (as was paid then and was slightly less sick).

Been buying nappies (cloth ones) on sale throughout pregnancy.

Buswanker · 20/07/2013 18:50

I start buying things we need as soon as I find out I am pregnant as it makes no sense not too - if you see babygro's reduced to half price why wait until a few months later to buy them. Most people struggle on maternity pay so every pound you save you will appreciate later.

Also you may feel tired or poorly later on and not able to spend hours waddling around picking baby blankets, especially if you have older children to look after too.
That time should be spent at home eating biscuits sat on the sofa on mumsnet while the kids watch cebeebies.

islingtongirl · 20/07/2013 20:01

Bought buggy about 17 weeks as wanted a particular one and had to preorder. Bought a little toy once have 20 week scan and had most big items by about 27/28 weeks on order I think (35 now and glad I dont have to be trekking round shops in this heat!) I also don't believe in tempting fate by buying early - what will be will be and odds are you will have a healthy bouncing baby in 5-6 months time :)

TruJay · 20/07/2013 20:43

We didn't get anything with our son until 7months, don't really know why?? We did have a lot of other things going on tho, moving house and hubby changing jobs.

I'm 25weeks now with current bump and went shopping with mum today, we popped into mothercare as having a huge sale. Don't know baby's sex but mum found some very cute unisex stuff and asked me if she would like her to buy them for us, we lost baby number 2 last year so I haven't really had the courage to buy anything yet but I was very happy to get the things today, we almost walked out with a pram too haha but want to leave that until a bit further on.

I think its fine to buy things whenever u feel comfortable, everyone is different and like others have said whether a pregnancy is successful or not is not determined by whether u have bought baby things or not. Plus if things are in the sale, like u say u would be silly to pass them up.

It's lovely buying your little one things, enjoy yourself x

toni1bump · 21/07/2013 10:28

Im 21 weeks tomorrow and have only bought clothes -- so many of them though!! Tbh we only have to buy the.cot cause luckiky have a large family and lots of help. But goin to wait untill we finally move.house.to get the cot. No.time is too early though! Its exciting and u wanna shop! :D.congrats.x

Monka · 21/07/2013 20:20

I bought my maternity clothes in the Xmas sales when I was only 7 weeks because they were half price and good quality from next. But for baby I bought most of the bigger stuff at 34 weeks me and hubbie chose everything we wanted at 22 weeks but went to order stuff from John Lewis with my mum around 34 weeks and we ended up spending slightly more on a better cotbed and my mum bought me my travel system. Still have some stuff left to buy like breastpump but will get that this week (will be 38 weeks).

I did buy baby clothes from mothercare at around 28 weeks as they were having a good offer and bought lots more things from them in their recent sales. Most of it was because we wanted to sort the house out first and get the baby stuff more towards the end. My special edition icandy travel system was in clearance in the John Lewis sales at Oxford street store so we ended up saving quite a bit than if we had bought it earlier so I am all in favour of picking up a good deal.

TheNobodies · 21/07/2013 20:44

I've got a cot and a pram... I'm not even pregnant. I have them from my previous pregancy but i lost my little boy at 23 weeks. I feel like I'm tempting fate by keeping them, but how I see it is if it happens it happens. If i don't end ip having a successful healthy pregnancy then i will sell them or pass them to my sister.

I brought the cot when i was 16 weeks with my little boy. I'm personally going to wait until 25+ next time due to high risk but if I wasnt I'd by things at 12+

purplemurple1 · 21/07/2013 21:46

Odds and ends after 12 weeks, but not in earnest until after our scan at 18weeks (only had one scan), but that was more becasue we wanted to tell people and see what free stuff we were going to be given.

poocatcherchampion · 22/07/2013 07:49

I'm always surprised by people buying things for number 2 onwards. we only need a double buggy. we weren't excessive with number one but I've got loads of vests and babygros from dd so haven't been near a baby shop yet.

MrsPear · 22/07/2013 08:08

This sort makes me Smile and brings back lovely memories! First time round I went into labour at 29+5 and gave birth at 30 weeks Shock
I had to be told to buy stuff by the neonatal staff as he was coming home (although I had done a list so all had to do was buy rather than choose)! Second time round I used the child benefit money each month after I had a stitch put in to buy the luxuries I couldn't afford the last time - a fair trade pram blanket, sheepskin for pram - and a new baby outfit (although I ordered this for store collect when he was born). I also bought a handle to attach to the pram for ds1 to have somewhere safe to hold (everyone laughed at this but when saw it in action thought it was great) and a new changing mat.

Get plenty of newborn cuddles they grow so quickly (ds 2 is now a big plus 7 months!)
