I am 30 weeks pregnant and have recently developed very bad pains in my pelvis (right in the V) and the pubic bone. I sit at work all day and dread having to get up from my seat as its so painful. I have an appt Monday for some muscle relaxation and reflexology on Thursday. I am fine when I'm sat down that's all well and good but I don't want to rest when people tell me to as I know at some point I have to get up and it will be agony.

I have my 31 week appt on Tuesday so I will ask about a belt and physio. Is there anything that I can do that will help me??

Thanks

I found a fantastic chiropractor who specialised in pelvic conditions and she sorted me out in all three pregnancies. You have my unconditional sympathy, you poor things, it had me in tears a few times.

I found physios absolutely useless by the way. They might give you a belt or tubigrip but that's about it.

I have found a Serola back support a lot of help, plus keeping my knees together as much as possible (no squatting) and avoiding the stairs (up and down) pretend you have a short skirt and no knickers on. I agree getting up after sitting for a while is a pain (literally) I have a large gym ball on order to try sitting on at work to see if it will help.

Have heard lots of good stories about chiropractors - but have to make sure they understand SPD though first.

Could be worth asking your MW/dr for adivice on how/what to sit on at work so you can take that to your health and safety / HR and get the right seat for you.
I'm starting to get a little sore and although it hurts a bit I'm finding making myself get up every hour at least for a little walk around, is a help as it stops me seizing up.

Thanks all. Luckily I get private health care through work so ill try and get booked into see a chiropractor. I slept with my legs together all night last night it's seems to have helped the pain in the V shape but its now shifted to the pubic bone. It usually takes me a few mins to get out of bed but a lovely calf cramp got me up out of bed faster than I have done in weeks! Worse than the pain is the frustration of feeling let down by my body. I was really enjoying being pregnant too!! Hmm

I got a pregnancy pillow which I put between my knees when I sleep. This has helped a lot. Also I've found physio really helpful. Mine is holding off giving me the belt if possible and instead has given me exercises to do between appointments as well as manipulating the right side of my pelvis back in to place when she found it was out. I think it depends how much they know about it as to how helpful they are.

Hope you find a solution that works for you, it's not fun X

Sleep exactly on your side with top knee and hip directly above lower knee and hip and pillow between your knees.

Follow these do's and don't s

www.serola.net/Serola-Theory/dr-serolas-dos-and-donts.html

See a chiropractor or osteo.

Don't sit so long!! Get up every half hour (if you get up and drink loads of water, you can then get up and go for lots of wees). Seriously this pregnancy only doing my desk job part time not full time has made a massive difference to pgp (barely got it this time - which is amazing cos I though it would be inevitable)

ilovemulberry · 20/07/2013 23:28

Thank you I will try all those. Just being away from my desk today has helped so much. Thank god my week off has come at the right time !! Did ice packs work for anyone on here?

I feel for you!!

I'm pregnant with DD3 and in my previous two pregnancies I suffered terribly from SPD, almost needing crutches by the end of PG2. I've been doing yoga this time and my yoga teacher gave me the best advise ever....don't spread your legs for anyone or anything! I haven't and (touch wood!) so far this time I'm still really mobile and totally pain free at 25wks.

Apart from the obvious reason to spread your legs (;-0) there's also getting in and out of a car/bed, getting up off the ground (keep your weight evenly balanced between your two legs). Going upstairs is also a trigger so put both feet on every step and crossing your legs when sitting is a no-no.

The good news is that if you avoid these triggers, you should see a big improvement in a few days.

Good luck!

I second a chiro or osteopath - my osteopath got me through pg with DS2 and SPD, which started around wk 20, iirc.

The main thing is to avoid moving your legs independently as much as possible - turning over in bed is a killer, you MUST keep your knees together and turn them both at the same time. Develop ways to get out of bed/seats/cars that involve your knees being jammed together as much as possible.

Massaging around the pubic symphisis, if you can reach, can be helpful; but keeping your pelvis as straight as possible at all times is the most helpful thing.

I've never tried ice packs - can't see how it would help, tbh.

For what its worth - i can squat as long as the weight is evenly distributed between my two legs - but i avoid anything like a lunge/ big step. And yes turning over in bed/ getting in and out of bed keep that pillow trappped between them.

Just a tip for when giving birth... Please make sure everyone is aware of your spd. Don't let them put you in stirrups. I have a terrible experience and 5 and a half months later my spd is excruciating and I'm having to have weekly physio and am very limited. All because during my labour they didn't listen to me or my husband and put me in stirrups and then I had forceps which has damaged me, possibly permanently. I don't mean to scare you at all, I just want you to be aware, will do anything to prevent someone else going through this!!
