Piles during pregnancy...will they come back??...

I am just getting rid of my first-ever bout of external thrombosed piles (OH MY GOD) at 34 weeks, and am terrified that they're going to come back as the baby drops and engages (and the pressure gets heavier) and/or during the all the pushing of labour.

Has anyone had them, got rid of them, and then magically never had them again??!...

Bumping for you.

I had them with dd1. it was the worst pain I have ever known Shock. But once they burst they didn't come back (but I didn't labour naturally as dd was born at 38 weeks). Never had any pile problems afterwards until 3 recently when pg with dd2, when I had the same problem. Excruciating. Hope that you remain pain free and good luck with your baby!

Oh, Laq, poor, poor love.

You have my sympathies - thrombosed piles are horrific. Worse, in my experience, than labour. Or kidney stones. Or, possibly, both at the same time.

I'm a women's health physio - hereby follows Farmer Giles Avoidance Tips:

Yep, you're at a higher risk of piles just now. Sorry. It's about managing your bum function to reduce the risk of the wee horrors popping back out.

The weight of the baby and placenta, the heat, the hormone making your digestion sluggish, the stress on your pelvic floor, the heat, your reduced mobility, the heat, will all increase your risk of Grapes of Wrath.

So:

  1. drink lots of water. Loads. Best thing ever for piles.
  2. eat well. Usual stuff - less crap, more fibre. Fruit juice is good too.
  3. ask GP about lactulose as a preventative - usually small daily dose.
  4. get some hydrocortisone suppositories (speak to GP) to store in your fridge so that if you do feel them coming back, or see blood, or have any straining to poo you can shrink the wee buggers.
  5. Sit properly on the loo - you need to try and mimic squatting. Easiest way is to bung a couple of phone books under your feet - have a look at gadget which works, squatty potty for the position you are trying to achieve. Don't sit and strain - just don't.
  6. pelvic floor exercises. Loads of em. Helps shrink the horrors down. If you aren't sure about what they are have a look at my website - there's a page about them. And, PM or post here - happy to help. www.gussetgrippers.weebly.com (hoep that's ok)
  7. painkillers - prob limited to paracetamol, but take them. Ask GP, they might have some numbing cream you could use.
  8. bumsex. Pushes them back up, job done.
  9. don't sit for hours and hours, get up and move around to limit the congestion
10. KY jelly or other lubricant up the jacksie helps the poo come out. 11. the old wive's tale about sitting on a cold surface causing piles? True, well, at least, it can cause thrombosing. So, there's the good thing about being heavily pregnant in this heat.

Ok, you got me, not No.8. That's a bad, bad, bad joke. I'm sorry it's an affliction

I've got some samples of www.analcare.com which is a herbal pile cream, if you PM me your address I'll post you them. It's good stuff, actually, I met them at a conference.

Serious Voice On: you are quite right to seek help for this. It is a horrible, debilitating and disabling condition, which won't kill you, but will make you utterly miserable. You might find they come back with labour - but, at least after that you can get some Proper Painkillers. And, as your hormones settle they'll usually improve anyway. Make sure you tell your midwife, they'll be able to advise you as labour progresses. Don't worry about them, or, at least, try to forget the horror you've just lived through, there's loads you can do to avoid them coming back

Sorry about the bumsex suggestion. Really, don't do that.

Shelley - THEY BURST?

Laquila · 19/07/2013 22:22

Bless you fluffy for bumping, Shelley for sharing your experience and Gussie for quite frankly the most horrifying yet hilarious list I've ever seen on mumsnet!

On the plus side, I'm already doing most of the things on your list, Gussie (although not No.8 ;)) - drinking loads of water, taking 10ml lactulose daily, trying to squat on the loo and trying to lie horizontal as much as poss to take the pressure off. Also, the GP gave me a cream with hydrocortisone which I think helped, or at least didn't make them any worse. I think hot(ish) baths helped for me too, although I was worried each time I eased myself into the bath that it was going to burst them...(and Gussie, seriously, t'interweb is rife with stories of bursting!!...horrendous...)

I'm also slightly cheered to note that you say it was the worst pain ever, Shelley - gives me hope that childbirth might not be as bad as piles :)

Right, off to do some more bloody pelvic floor exercises....thanks again for all your help and advice - it is very much appreciated!

I've had 3 kids, all blessed with giant heads. Piles were worse. True.

Hope you get on ok, sounds like you are doing it all perfectly fine.

Bursting? Really? Feck. That's gotta hurt...am away to update my training, via Google.
