Irish names English people can say

Any Irish mums or mums-to-be out there with English OHs???
I really want my baby to have an Irish name, so that, despite my fading accent (the shame Blush), we can still maintain a bit of heritage (it's all getting lost with the World Cup coming up!).
DH and his family are from Up North, so they have trouble pronouncing any of my sisters kids names, all beautiful Irish names like Saoirse (they say Sushi), Ciaran (Key-ron), Blaithin (Blah-hoon!!) .
We've been told it's a girl, so any suggestions would be welcome! I have a DS, but couldn't come up with an Irish name for him, so this one HAS to have an Irish name!!!

my dd is Erin, but maybe not Irish enough.

Beats me. Our daughters have Gaelic names - one Scots Gaelic, Eilidh. The other is Roisin after DH's beloved Nana.

I'd just go w/an Irish name and they can learn to pronounce it.

Alanna

expatinscotland · 07/06/2006 15:22

How about Nuala? DH's first cousin is called that and it's pretty easy to pronounce.

Annie29 · 07/06/2006 15:22

I like SInead too, but I have a very good friend called Sinead, so I don't want to call her that.

One of the midwives who delivered Roisin was Irish and she was called Attracta. But I wouldn't call my bairn that. :o

LadySherlockofLGJ · 07/06/2006 15:24

Ailbhe ? == Alva

Bugger to spell though ?

bossykate · 07/06/2006 15:25

aislin/ashling?
orla?
caitlin/kathleen?

roisin is lovely.

expatinscotland · 07/06/2006 15:26

DH's nana was a gem, from what everyone tells me, God rest her soul.

Likewise, baby Roisin is a cuddly wee thing.

bossykate · 07/06/2006 15:26

maeve?

expatinscotland · 07/06/2006 15:26

Fidelma.

schneebly · 07/06/2006 15:27

cara
ciara
clare

LadySherlockofLGJ · 07/06/2006 15:27

Bronagh

Annie29 · 07/06/2006 15:27

Erin is on my shortlist, but DH doesn't like it for some reason. I think it's beautiful. Roisin is nice too. I agree I should just go with it and they can learn. Though they have been trying to learn to say Saoirse and the rest for quite a few years now, and still can't manage it.
Nuala, hmmm, no offence but a bit old lady ish (sorry!). Easy to pronounce though, you are right there.
Alanna is too close to my own name!!

Aoife is a beautiful name.

Tinker · 07/06/2006 15:28

Roisin and Siobhan are nice

Tinker · 07/06/2006 15:29

Naimh (sp?) - do like that.

expatinscotland · 07/06/2006 15:29

Well, Nuala has a daughter called Saoirse and if I, an American, can pronounce it, so can these folks. It's a lovely name.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 07/06/2006 15:30

And if you really want to mess with their heads........Aoibheann. Grin
