Advice on scan dates

I'm currently nearly 6 weeks with my first pregnancy so I have a bit of time to sort this out but think I need some advice...
I would like to have the NT test etc but will be working abroad from 11+0 until 14+0, which I can't change. I don't want to chance waiting til the very last day to get the 12 week scan in case my dates are a bit out. I could try to get a day off and fly back home for one day (around 13+2). But would the NHS be able to somehow miraculously be able to offer me the exact date I want?
Or can the 12 week / NT test be done at 10 weeks? Confused
New to all this - any advice welcome!

I think there is a blood test that can be done at 14 weeks that can take the place of the NT. The scan is only part of that screening anyway. It's a compound risk assessment based on several factors including a scan and blood test. You can contact your midwife to ask about this, even if you haven't had your booking it appointment yet. I think it's pretty unlikely that they would offer you the specific date you might want, since they always seem to be oversubscribed.

Thanks Agenda, I'll look into that blood test. Next step is finding a midwife...

The alternate blood test is he quadruple test. I think is is done at about15 weeks. I believe it has an 80% accuracy rate as opposed to a 90% accuracy rate with the combined nuchal test.

Definitely can't do the nt between those dates. I think it is 11 weeks 2/3 and 13 weeks 6. The best time to do is between 12 and thirteen weeks.

Fairydogmother · 19/07/2013 13:14

There's a triple and a quadruple blood test you can have. I had a triple test at 15 weeks

Mogz · 19/07/2013 13:43

I had the quad test at just over 14 weeks, the scan can't be done before 11 weeks-ish as baby is too little.
The quad test was fine though, had to pop in to hospital 3 days after they took it because of a raised result, very impressed at how quick the results were.

I think paying to have it fine privately might be the easiest way of guaranteeing a day.

But to get your Downs risk they would also need to do your bloods and then what? Call the NHS ultrasound department and sort your dating scan out there, at least you will have continuity of care and if there is a problem they will be able to see it through with you. They will also date you at the most accurate time and you will be properly in the system. Otherwise you will end up as a late booker and the same clarity isn't there for later decision making.

If private is an option then I'd have the Harmony test. I had it taken at 10weeks and so knew results at 12.

If you google harmony test +'your area' providers will come up. I had mine at the fetal medicine clinic on Harley st

Roshbegosh · 20/07/2013 07:10

Actually yes, the harmony test is a very good idea.

Shellywelly1973 · 20/07/2013 13:00

Ive just been through this, this week.

I would go for the harmony test if i were you. Can be done from 10 weeks.

Best of luck.

Thanks so much to everyone for the advice Flowers - I have looked into the Harmony test at the FMC and it seems like the best option by far - accuracy as well as more flexibility on dates. I'll have to come back to the UK for a day to do the follow up and get my head around the fact that work isn't top priority right now Shock Wink.
Roshbegosh - good point about getting in the NHS system either way, I definitely couldn't afford to do any more of this privately!

Anyhow, I had some cramping and spotting yesterday so the question might be sadly irrelevant. Will have to wait and see...
