sadly, only if they are cooked and piping hot (or at least that's what I've been going by). Prawn curry anyone?

Esmummy · 07/06/2006 12:17

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh :( I sooo badly want to eat them

Officially not, but I always did if I new where they were from/fresh etc..

madmarchhare · 07/06/2006 12:22

The thing is with all these foods to avoid in pregnancy is that they are going to make you ill if they are off, like it would make you ill if you werent pregnant. So its the illness you are trying to avoid.

Esmummy · 07/06/2006 12:24

They dont go off til 11th June so still got plenty of time left in date.

I'd eat them. Its like cold meats, you shouldn't eat them because of the risk of listeria but how many times have you caught listeria from the deli?

madmarchhare · 07/06/2006 12:30

They will probably be OK, but remember its how they have been stored etc..

I would avoid uncooked ones when eating out maybe.

NatalieJane · 07/06/2006 12:30

I read something on MN a while ago about prawns in pregnancy, and the lady who said about it (can't remember the name Blush - sorry) she said her GP had only seen one case of listeria in 25 years of working as a GP and that they weren't 100% it actually was listeria, so I would say you have much more chance of being hit by a bus as you cross the road than you do of catching listeria....

I would say if you are confident they are fresh then eat them (I have done in both of my pregnancies) but obviously it is your own choice.

madmarchhare · 07/06/2006 12:32

Thats exactly it YF. My SIL wont even eat mozzarella. Its driving me round the bend.

YellowFeathers · 07/06/2006 12:34

Oh I gave in to the cheeses at xmas and I'm fine and so is baby (well that depends on how you look at that one Grin)

Get em out and enjoy Grin

Kathy1972 · 07/06/2006 12:40

I read an American thing saying prawns were ok, and normally American pregnancy advice is more paranoid than British, so I figured they were probably ok.
I'm avoiding the kind of shellfish that makes people ill a lot (eg mussels, oysters) but I'm eating prawns quite happily. I'd go for it but have them cooked if I were you.

Esmummy · 07/06/2006 12:40

I have been eating prawns too, cold with salad cream and salad, caught night before last, cooked yesterday, shelled and eaten today, no ill effects so far. Hope you enjoy yours Esmummy. Smile

teabags · 08/06/2006 14:39

yes but I had a v bad stomach after eating prawns when pg . Dr said prawns are a v good protein but if they happen to be dodgy you will be more sensitive to it (although no harm to baby)

Esmummy · 08/06/2006 14:59

Nothing dodgy to report here, they were bloody gorgeous. Infact I think they may be a craving of mine, can't stop eating them. Am going to plenty more with my shopping tomorrow.

Cannot believe I deprieved myself for my whole pregnancy with DD

Kathy1972 · 08/06/2006 15:02

Might get some too, Esmummy! Smile
Anyway, the only time I have had a stomach upset in years it turned out to be from bloody RICE!

NatalieJane · 08/06/2006 15:02

See now why can't I have cravings like that? At the moment I am having to shove strawberries dipped in colslaw to satisfy myself!!

Kathy1972 · 08/06/2006 15:03

Gosh Nataliejane, are you pregnant or something? Wink

NatalieJane · 08/06/2006 15:06

:o I was thinking the same thing...!

babyonboard · 08/06/2006 15:48

You can buy trays of frozen king prawns..we got them from sainsburys and a local chinese supermarket..
I thought..and my midwife confirmed..that frozen is much better as they are frozen soon after catching, and you can be sure to cook them properly if doing it yourself

I love them..but calamari is my big pregnancy craving..proper stuff..not too chewy and covered in chunky batter..with lemon and hot chillis..yum...
