All you bag carriers convert to a wheelie suit case....I had a baby bag and a mummy bag first time around and it was a complete pain in the arse so second time around it was a wheelie suitcase and a changing bag...it worked better and was easier leaving the Hosp!!! Especially if you are delivering in this heat!!! Grin

I didn't take anything in with me due to unexpected labour at 37 weeks & had planned a home birth so I hadnot packed a bag. You will survive without a lot of it you know.

i wanted to get my partner more involved so i packed my things and he has packed baby's god knows what he has packed in there but i think it is EVERYTHING!! baby needs lol he is so excited.

I think it depends on the hospital. The hospital I have birth in, the rooms were huge so plenty of room for bags, certainly no having to put things in bedside cabinets. Your DH could also stay as long as you wanted, they had camp beds for them.

The one I got transferred to though DH had to go home as I got put on a post-natal ward, however there was no problem with suitcases.

They won't want your dp sleeping in the waiting room and if he causes a fuss he risks not being allowed in for the birth. Also, won't he need a change of clothes if your in for a few days?

I took a pre-induction bag (took 2 nights for a bed to become free in the delivery suite despite being an emergency planned induction at 38 weeks Hmm). Then a labour bag and finally a post birth bag (had to stay in another night).

northernlurker · 17/07/2013 19:29

Ummm you need to check what your dp has packed. If you're a parent and he isn't yet chances are you've a better idea than him as to what's needed.
Also I don't think you should be rude to people offering you the advice you've asked for. Some hospitals will ask you to unpack your suitcase. Be prepared for that. Depending on how your labour progresses the staff may advise dp to go home. Relatives sleeping in the building is not desirable and in certain circumstances may lead to security popping along to remove them which I'm sure neither of you would want - so be prepared for that too.

I gave birth to dd with a carrier bag of stuff at the hospital with me and it was fine, even thought want intentional.

You need a couple of changes of cloths for you and a newborn, a wash bag, some nappies and 300,000 sanitary towels.

A suitcase? Are you moving in to the hospital till the baby is 6 months old?

MrsLianeB · 17/07/2013 19:53

I have an overhead size pull along suitcase for my stuff got enough for labour + 3 days + going home outfit. Then I have the changing bag filled with babies stuff for 3 days + going home. Both will be coming in the car with me and OH when we go to hospital with car seat.
I have been as savvy as possible with packing ie. going home outfit is leggings and thin tshirt (takes up little room) got flip flops to wear around the ward + going home in. If I have to stay longer than 2 days then OH will have to bring me anything extra but hopefully this won't be the case.
As for anyone unpacking my things they will be told not to touch my private belongings and as a Nurse I would never go through a patients bag/put things away unless they requested me too and would hope other HCPs follow suit!

Overnight bag for me, the baby's changing bag for the baby.

cardamomginger · 17/07/2013 20:02

OP - I agree. The list I was given by the hospital told me to bring 2 pillows and 2 bath towels. By the time I'd packed those, and clothing for me and DD, I had pretty much filled a large suitcase. Then there was the food bag. Stacks of stuff.

Bejeena · 17/07/2013 20:26

Makeup? Gob smacked I have to say!

I did think about a small overhead locker trolley suitcase but am worried about it not fitting into the cabinet as well and more the security aspect of it. Luckily the hospital have said you only need clothes for taking baby home in and also they provide nappies, breast pads etc so guess I won't need much.

I'm going in for a section and taking a pull along suitcase. This will contain all my belongings plus the baby's. I will also squeeze in my feeding pillow and a large towel. I can't be bothered to have several different bags this time. Fortunately will have a private room so there should be room for everything.
