Morning sickness drugs

Hello,

I'm 6+6 into my first pregnancy and feel like death. Very strong nausea but no actual vomming. Can't get off the sofa, can't face eating anything other than white bland carbs in very small amounts.

GP has been v.helpful, signed off sick past week or so due to this and being constantly dizzy.

Dizzyness is fading but the nausea is getting worse.

Have been prescribed prochloperazine which has taken the edge off, but not enough for me to be able to return to work.

GP did say the could prescribe something stronger if necessary.

I'd be very interested in your experiences of taking tablets for morning sickness please. I want to feel better and go back to work!

Many thanks

I was violently ill from 5 weeks through to 12 weeks, to the extent that I couldn't keep water down and the constant vomiting lasted from about 9am - 5pm.
My lovely OBGYN prescribed me diclectin which is an antihistamine based drug with B12 and it really helped. I can't remember the dosage but I pretty much doubled it and it allowed me to keep some water and bland food down.
Other friends have been prescribed Zofran and they did well on that too. I remember waking up at 6am to take the pill so by the time I got up at 7am it was taking effect. Wouldn't hesitate to take everything under the sun to stop that horrendous feeling.
I really feel for those who don't have access to these drugs, I wouldn't have been able to get out of bed without them.

You may have already seen this. I found it very helpful and informative.

Sounds wonderful! I really like your idea of waking a bit earlier to take them, will definitely give that a try, thanks.

I was prescribed metoclopramide (think brand name is maxalon). Allowed me to keep food and water down and went from vomiting 15-20 times a day to 2 or 3 times so a huge improvement. I took it from 6-20 weeks.

I had an injection for the first dose as I was vomiting even tiny quantities of water. It was amazing.

So sorry you are suffering OP.

I really cannot recommend Buccastem enough. It dissolves between your top lip and gum (useful for the times when even a sip of water would make you gag/vomit). They work so fast.
And then I also had ondansertron for the really bad days.

I completely sympathize. I suffered dreadfully first time around and then 2nd preg, with an 18mo old I couldn't do it. Those drugs saved my sanity.

Good luck and congratulations.

I also found that once the nausea was more controlled then I had a tiny bit more energy to get off sofa etc

ThreeEyedRaven · 13/07/2013 19:18

Thanks for your quick responses.

The link to the pregnancy and sickness website was really useful, thank you for that.

I currently have a buccastem tablet under my lip and hope it lifts this feeling soon! I find they take the edge off but still don't allow me to function, never realised you could combine it with Ondenastron, worth mentioning to me GP I think.

Thanks again everyone, this too shall pass I guess!

Ondansertron is rarely prescribed in uk as its so expensive. In the US it's the first line drug for MS

ThreeEyedRaven · 13/07/2013 19:40

I'm guessing it would be cheaper than my NHS sick leave! Might have to dig out the formulary guide to have a look.

I'm a midwife OP so I used that as 'weight' with the gp to get it...

ThreeEyedRaven · 13/07/2013 19:54

Total barg when you think of the cost saving against a sicknote!

We're you ok on it?

IcouldstillbeJoseph · 13/07/2013 20:07

Yes.
I still remember being nauseous etc but absolutely nowhere near as bad as first-time with no drugs. I wish I'd have been more realistic and taken something first time around.
I was fretting about taking medication when pregnant but then went on to end up in ITU twice with severe pneumonia so had 5 chest x-rays, VQ scan, loads of IV's etc so it sort of paled in comparison

ThreeEyedRaven · 13/07/2013 20:36

oh my goodness, that sounds like a nightmare! Glad to see you came through it! Thanks for your advice Smile

Was ok really - I actually said to DH in ITU that pneumonia was far preferable to morning sickness. I think for the first time he actually understood how miserable it is. Give me ANYTHING over constant nausea!
Congratulations & good luck

I tried a couple as I had horrendous sickness. Still going on at 36 weeks but much more manageable due to tablets. Am on cyclizine now and it had been a lifesaver! Can take up to three a day, weaned myself down to two! But it's amazing stuff!!!

It will pass. It really doesn't feel like it but it does!!

Beccadugs · 14/07/2013 14:59

I have been put on the same one as you threeeyed raven. Day two and feeling a little bit better in that I can now keep water down and no actual vomming, just lots of pound retching, so I am taking this as a positive!

I do worry about taking drugs, but worry more about my sanity if I had continued feeling so awful.

Bunnylion · 14/07/2013 19:27

Buccastem worked absolute wonders for me.

The only time it wasn't effective was when I had jet lag after a long haul. Make sure you have more than enough sleep, it really makes a difference I your nausea.

I'm in 3rd trimester now and some nausea has retuned, nothing like before thankfully. The pharmacist said it can cause the baby to have tremors in the first few dats if I take it now, but that it's ok to do if I'm desperate. I've not actually vomited in the 3rd trimester so I have avoided taking it since week 12 when the initial sickness stopped. I hope yours does soon too!
