Okay so I may come under some criticism here but I'm interested in hearing your views.
I'm 17wks pregnant and as I type this I am in my garden on my sun lounger sunbathing in my bikini. It is 28 degrees and absolutely glorious. I am covered head to toe in sun cream, I am not over heating in the slightest and am keeping myself thoroughly hydrated. There is nothing wrong in this, surely?

Like I said, I am interested in heating your views, not here for an argument but PLEASE, none of this "boil in the bag" nonsense.....

I think you just need to be extra careful to stay hydrated amd not get too hot. Also top up your cream more than you would as you can burn more easily. If you're not too hot, baby won't be either, and as they're completely covered by you, they won't get sunburnt! Grin

Applepiesky · 13/07/2013 14:28

Haha thanks mango... Exactly, I'm doing everything as I should and I'm happy as larry out here and really enjoying myself :-)

The only thing that would top it would be if I had an ice cold glass of sangria in my hand ;-)

I read somewhere that winter babies statistically are healthier than summer ones as their babies have been exposed to more sunlight (and therefore more vitamin D).

"Boil in the bag" is ridiculous. Your baby is in a constant 37 degree environment anyway. It's not as hot as that outside! The main risks are to you, not the baby - as long as you don't get dehydrated or let yourself overheat, it's absolutely fine.

lurcherlover · 13/07/2013 14:54

Ginger beer with a dash of lime cordial in it is a lovely preggo summer drink, by the way Grin

MrsMangoBiscuit · 13/07/2013 15:00

At the moment I like apple juice and soda with a dash of elderflower cordial.
I'm grumping right now though as I can't find my bikini top, so I can't sunbathe. Sad

Applepiesky · 13/07/2013 15:09

Thanks ladies. My sentiments exactly :-) I've got a me freeze tip top on the go at the mo! So hardcore!
Good luck on finding your bikini top!

just be careful about your skin, pregnancy does funny things to your body.
I started getting melasma (uneven dark spots) during pregnancy...

MrsMangoBiscuit · 13/07/2013 15:39

It's gone! I can't find my flipping bikini anywhere, and bump wants sun! Time to go shopping me thinks. Hmm, maybe I can convince DH to take me, think I might need the help with my chubby stumps feet as swollen as they are. Grin

Shellywelly1973 · 13/07/2013 17:07

Ive never understood why you shouldn't sunbathe whilst pregnant.

I think driving around London buying school uniform is far more risky behaviour as at times the temp in the car was outrageous today...

tory79 · 13/07/2013 17:12

We went to Florida when I was 20 weeks pg, and I spent lots of time sunbathing as I figured it would be the last holiday for many years where I got to do that in peace!

My main concern was how to tan my back Smile

Applepiesky · 13/07/2013 17:20

Yes tory my back is white compared to my bronzed front! It's pretty impossible at the moment! Funny tho :)

Oh I do love this sun! X

I used to. We went to Greece when I was 16 weeks pg with DS. And there were some sunny days just before DD was born.

I didn't use much sun cream but I used to sunbathe in short 15min bursts then come in to cool down. IIRC I did protect my face so I didn't get any dark patches.

BarefootShirl · 13/07/2013 17:47

I carried on sunbathing through both pregnancies, including 2 weeks in Spain with DD bump - just made sure to use sun cream and stay hydrated. Did check with a friend who was a doctor beforehand and she said it would be fine.

StaceyP85 · 13/07/2013 18:46

I'm 17 weeks as well and I've spent all day chilling in the sun too!

As far as I've been told like the previous ladies have said as long as you keep hydrated and applying sun cream you will be fine. All doctors say the 2nd trimester is the best time for a holiday so figure the uk sun is nothing in comparison to abroad :)

Enjoy your sunbathing :)

Strokethefurrywall · 13/07/2013 18:59

Ahhh enjoy it - I spent most of my pregnancy in a bikini enjoying the sun knowing full well that once DC arrived I wasn't going to get a quiet day at the beach again for a long while. I was right.

I'm paler now than I was when I first arrived here and I live on a tropical island!

redandyellowandpinkandgreen · 13/07/2013 19:41

I think it's fine. I'm worried about getting odd pigmentation on my face so I'm avoiding where I can.

LabradorMama · 14/07/2013 11:09

I've been sunbathing too, for as long as I can stand the heat! Regular popping indoors to cool down with an ice pop helps. Also I bought an inflatable lilo with a hole in it for my bump (called a 'holo') which I highly recommend!!

Fairydogmother · 14/07/2013 13:04

Another one who's been out sunbathing! My front is a fabulous colour and my back is white as I can't lie on my front!

Kelly1814 · 14/07/2013 13:12

oh enjoy it!

i livein a hot country with year round sunshine (48 degrees today) and have sunbatehd throughout - am 28 weeks.

am perfectly fine and absolutely love to feel the sun on my face and body. no dark spots or anything, am heavily involved in factor 50.

MultipleMama · 14/07/2013 13:24

I'm in the garden now sunbathing! I think people worry too much and where all those "boil in the bag" comments come from. Stupid as they are (meaning the notions). I'm currently wearing a lovely bikini with my feet in the kids paddling pool.

I think as long as you're using a high enough SPF and hydrating yourself. You should be absolutely fine Smile.

MultipleMama · 14/07/2013 13:26

Labmama I might invest in one of those!

suntodayplease · 14/07/2013 13:26

I've not been sunbathing that much, but despite factor 50 I've still got the best tan I've had in years! Not brave enough for a bikini but bandeau from H&M has helped avoid strap marks, personally a bit of healthy colour makes me feel lots better considering I'm officially turning into a whale. I've had the boil in bag comments from DH etc, finding it a little annoying now! Really miss the spritzer that normally accompanies my sunbathing though.
