The school mums are arranging a night out next Friday for end of term drinks. I missed the last one but went to the Christmas drinks and it was so much fun I do really want to go. However it gets quite boozy and it will be obvious I won't be drinking. At Christmas I did say we definitely wanted another child at some point in the future so I think people will cotton on and I really don't want to share this with them yet. I am only 6 weeks. What can I say that people will believe?!

I'm going to a work summer party tonight with loads of free drink. Usually I'd be taking full advantage and getting smashed. I'll be sticking to soft drinks that could be mixers but if anyone does notice that I'm not drinking I will say that I have an early doctor's appointment/blood test so I can't have a hangover. Might not work but thought it would be more convincing than antibiotics.

You could say that you donated blood earlier in the day and still feel a bit off.
You could imply that you are having difficulty conceiving, and ramping up the healthy side of things. People especially family and close friends usually back right off then.
Touch of D&V - you'll probably be a social pariah though Grin

Mostly if you have a glass in your hand no-one will notice. You can always rope in a friend to "help" you lower the levels, and you can volunteer to go to the bar if there is a kitty in operation.

Could I drink a spritzer? Would that be safe?

Personally (and this is just me) I have not had any alcohol at all during my pregnancy. I live in germany where is is a big no no here from the doctors, without getting into a big debate about alchohol in preg, since is is clearly every womans own decision and that is how is should be. That being said, the first 12 weeks (past the first 4/5) are pretty crucial for the embryo and you don't want to touch anything at all during that stage, even the NHS guidelines now say this.

If I was in your position, I would just buy my own drinks, or if someone gets one in for you just get a soft drink and say if asked you are a bit thirsty, or the dental one is a good one previously mentioned - just say your wisdom tooth has a bad infection and they have put you on drugs that make you ill if you drink on annoyingly (this is true for teeth), or that you picked up a UTI and can't drink.

Teaandflapjacks · 11/07/2013 17:02

say you are on metronidazole...

When to avoid drinking alcohol completely

It is necessary to completely avoid drinking alcohol when taking:
metronidazole ? an antibiotic sometimes used to clear dental, or vaginal, infections, or to clear infected leg ulcers, or pressure sores

MummyPig24 · 11/07/2013 17:05

I don't feel comfortable with drinking when knowingly pregnant so I would rather not drink a spritzer if it isn't safe. The mixer idea is the best and I will just pretend there's alcohol in it.

Mummy that sounds like the best option, I am sure a half glass is perfectly fine, but if you are like me I am a bit 'sky falling down' and would the worry about it, and then think 'what if' all the time, daft but that is how my brain works - once docs told me not to, I found I cant go against that. Either way hope you have a lovely time with the girls and congrats on your pregnancy!! x

DuelingFanjo · 11/07/2013 17:18

How about 'I was out the other day and was so pissed I really never want to look at another alcoholic drink again'

Dry July?

I agree with pretending you have an alcoholic drink. If someone insists on buying you a drink have a soft drink and say you are alternating between alcohol and soft drinks as last time the hangover was awful.

I have found the best thing is to not say you aren't drinking. I either get a mixer with no alcohol in it or nurse a drink and then tip it down loo!

No one really notices or cares UNLESS you say you're not drinking and then they all scrutinise!

BrianButterfield · 11/07/2013 19:51

I went to a big family party at 6 weeks, drank Becks Blue or Kopparberg 0% from a glass and nobody had any idea. Even in the bottle Becks Blue looks just like a normal bottle of Becks.

MummyPig24 · 12/07/2013 20:44

Argh my friend just text me saying "I'll pop over with wine if you're not busy" I had to be feeble and say dh and I were eating dinner and watching a film. Awkward!

Can I just say here that Schloer decanted into a wine bottle (white wine) has seen me through sterling service this pregnancy with bring a bottle events or drinking at my house with friends!! that is my TOP tip there, free of charge.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 12/07/2013 21:28

Nobody will believe the antibiotics thing. TBH I don't think there is any lie a woman of a certain age can tell that Wong get rumbled.

However, getting a tonic with a slice for the first round and then saying "actually I skipped lunch so that G&T hit me quite hard - better stick with softies from now on otherwise I'll be wasted" might work. Since it's school mums you won't be able to pull the "DC has a bug/is teething so I'm going to be up several times in the middle of the night" line.

MrsHoolie · 12/07/2013 21:37

If someone says they're on antibiotics I always think pregnancy!Especially as you can drink on a lot of them.

I think saying you're really hungover is a good one....I often do this (I'm not pregnant btw!)

LivinItSmall · 13/07/2013 06:48

I'm in the same situation next Friday and I'm going for lunareef's approach - telling them that I need my old eggs in tip top condition to start trying over the summer Smile

MummyPig24 · 13/07/2013 06:51

Hmm I'm not comfortable with telling people we are trying for a baby, that's a bit too personal! I'll just go for soda and lime and if anyone asks its a g&t and then get my own drinks.

RobinSparkles · 13/07/2013 07:00

What ShowOfHands said!

Just buy yourself a tonic water and pretend it's a G&T.

I had my Hen Do when I was 9 weeks pregnant. I drank non alcoholic cocktails all night and all my friends assumed that they were alcoholic. They even tried them. One of my friends was drinking wine and got a bit tiddly and blamed it on the swig of my cocktail going to her head! Grin

When I announced my pregnancy a few weeks later, one of my other friends said, "Shock but you were drinking like a fish on your night out!" No one realised.

Seriously, if you don't make a song and dance, no one will notice what you are drinking. Just buy your own drinks. Even if they offer you a drink say something like, "ooh I'm feeling a bit tipsy and need to pace myself so I'll just have a lemonade, thanks!"
