Worried about positive glucose tolerance test result...

Just that really: had a glucose tolerance test more than a week back (fasting for 12 hours before, followed by lucozade and repeated blood testing). I was told that if I hadn't heard back within 24 hours, it was all clear, and I'd forgotten all about it. But came back after the weekend to a phone message saying that my levels were elevated, and have booked in an appointment where they will discuss home testing :(

Has anyone had a high reading on the glucose tolerance/challenge test but not got gestational diabetes? I'm 29 weeks, and was measuring 'spot on' according to my mid-wife at 28 weeks. My BMI is normal (but on the high end), and I eat healthily and cycle/walk lots. But I also have a strong family history of type II diabetes, and am Indian (which is a risk factor by itself).

Anyone stories about what happens next after a high reading on the glucose tolerance/challenge test very welcome! Also, does this definitely mean that I have gestational diabetes? And if so, is a home/midwife led unit birth automatically out of the question?

Hello I'm 29 weeks now and I found out 2.weeks ago I failed the gd test. I think the cut off was 7.9 and my result came back as 8.1 so borderline really. My bmi is slightly high but I also have a family history of type 2.diabetes.

I've been referred to the diabetic clinic where I have to go every 4 week's. I've got a testing kit to test my blood 4 times a day. I get 4 weekly cans to check the babies not growing too much and they've said that they won't let me go over my due date and I'll get induced at 39 weeks.

I'm still hoping for a normal birth and hopefully if I.control what I eat I will

Thanks Bananastar: its oddly reassuring to have other people in the same situation, even though I obviously wish that no one had to deal with this. Good to hear what the next steps might look like, and I'm already gearing up to try and eat a diabetes-controlling diet (no more chocolate: sob!)

Hey, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes about the same time as you. Am six weeks along now and have had a couple of meetings with the diabetes team and testing four times a day.

They're really good, they keep a good eye on you, I have had a growth scan so far and all was fine, have another meeting this Wednesday and scan when hopefully I'll find out a bit more about what to expect birth wise- am 35 weeks.

The midwife has said I have to stay in hospital for 24 hours after so they can test my blood and the baby's a few times.

You can still have diabetic chocolate. The boots with hazelnut one is nice, um, just be wary too much can cause a laxative effect. A whole bar is too much. Ahem!

I have just had the same thing...got the test last Wednesday and didn't hear anything but the diabetes nurse just phoned an hour ago . I've to go in on Friday to arrange testing etc. i'm measuring full term at 33 Weeks so i'm obviously concerned about a big baby etc. the dietitian has just phoned there and talked me through what I should and shouldn't EAt. Hope everything is ok for you.
