Breast pads - too early to buy?

Hi,
I'm 25 weeks and planning to try breast feed. I've heard a lot about lansinoh so was thinking of buying some breast pads and cream whilst I remember. But what I don't know is if I will definitely need these or are some women fine with bf and therefore should I play it by ear and pick up once baby is here if I need any? Sorry if stupid question - first pregnancy! Thanks.

I would defiantly get some, with the cream get the smallest you can apparently it goes a long way. And the pads will be needed I'm 32+4 and they're not quite dripping sorry tmi but they are leaking a bit can only imagine it'll be worse when baby arrives especially at let down

Oh and congrats Grin. Flowers

lanisoh, or kamillosan which is equally good, are definitely worth buying in advance as it's the first few days when you will need them most. They are expensive (£7ish) but sometimes on offer so pick up a tube if you see one cheaper. They have other uses for cuts and bites etc so won't go to waste! Don't bother with cheaper brands, they are not nearly as good.

Breast pads will probably be needed from about day 3 when your milk comes in. I found that when baby fed from one side then the other side leaked so definitely essential for me even over a year later!! Some women don't need them but most will so best to get a couple of packs just in case! Good luck Smile

Well ime I stocked up both pg's but barely leaked at all and ended up giving boxes away.
Buy a box or two, and one tube of lansinoh.

I started leaking about 3 weeks before my Ds was born last time so pads are worth having just incase. I like tommy tippee ones the best, they're even wrapped in pairs so you could slip some in your bag so you're prepared for it you start leaking early. My mate breast fed and didn't leak at all so everyone's different.

With regard to the nipple cream, definitely get that and start using NOW! I did this with my first pg and had no chapped nipples once I started to breast feed.

You ladies are brill, thank you! Seen some on offer on Amazon so will get some now, am expecting strange looks from DH when they arrive but looks like they'll definitely get used!!

With all three I never needed them but always bought them just in case. They are pretty cheap and I had them packed in my hospital bag.

Unused breast pads make extremely good all-purpose household cleaning pads. I wouldn't buy them for that purpose, but never felt any spares were wasted.

Avoid ones with a waterproof layer, especially for the first box, as they can hold dampness to the nipple and this isn't great for many.

BinarySolo · 07/07/2013 10:13

Oh and don't bother with reusables either. They're nowhere near obsorbent enough.

Romily · 07/07/2013 10:25

It is also worth buying breast shells for wearing around the house, saves a fortune on breast pads and the collected milk can be used for expressed feeds.

melliebobs · 07/07/2013 10:29

Stock up on the cream now! Dh ended up doing an emergency boots run on day 1 cos I'd never been told about it and my god it was needed! And it was still needed for the first 3 months or so. And as for breast pads start stocking up too (you can always eBay surplus) but I was still using them up to 6/7 months Sad

AuntieStella · 07/07/2013 10:30

You can't know in advance how much you'll leak. Reusables are handy in the early days, simply so that keeping on top of washing them becomes a task for later on not in the early days.

melliebobs · 07/07/2013 10:31

Oh and with pads get a few different brands. Boots weren't absorbent enough neither were Lansinoh ones. They either had to be tommee tippee or Johnsons ones Smile

Littleboyx2 · 07/07/2013 15:01

I have just received some bamboo fabric washable ones from ebay, only £4 and great that they are reusable.

BeanoNoir · 07/07/2013 15:13

I'm 35 weeks pg and need breast pads at night already otherwise I have attractive damp circles on my pyjamas. So yeah, I'd get them.

Fakebook · 07/07/2013 15:26

Yes definitely get both beforehand. I wish I'd know about things like this with my first pregnancy!

When your milk comes in you will be leaking a lot. Then each opposite side will leak when you feed. They're also good for catching milk sprays when you have your let down reflex. I tried different ones the first time and liked the johnsons ones, but this time I used Boots disposable ones which they stopped making I think. I then used the Nuby disposable ones until DS was 11 months.
