Help with hip pain in night

I'm really struggling with this now (22+4) and just not sleeping well at all. I have a v shaped pillow which was working well if I put it between my lower legs but it's not helping any more. Looked at dream genii pillow but not sure it would any better - anyone any advice?

I'm pretty much ok durin the day, it's only really once I've been lying for a while. Sleep fine for a couple of hours then wake up constantly to change position. All advice gratefully received!

I got hip pain in the last weeks of pregnancy. It got worse and earlier with each pregnancy.
I lay on a folded duvet which sometimes felt better. Pillow between legs yes. But basically just turned over every couple of hours. Horrid. Oh and it also started to ache during the day. Support tights helped then.
Ask you midwife for advice. I don't know much about SPD(?) but maybe find out about that too.

I find the biggest help is heat so maybe try a wheat pack that you stick in the microwave and drape it over your hip when you're in bed. Even if you have to get up once in the night to reheat it, it may allow you to get back to sleep quicker. A warm bath just before bed also helps me.

Having said all that, if you're in the UK and suffering enjoying this heatwave then extra warmth may be the opposite of what you need. I'm having this dilemma myself at night with back pain. I think giving in to paracetamol is on the cards!

Chickpea1983 · 06/07/2013 09:51

I also have this and had a long physio session this week to try and work out what the problem is. They didn't say it was SPD, but my pelvis was out of line and she said it is moving too much.

The good thing about the appt, she showed me how to turn over in the night which sounds stupid but I was hurting myself by doing it all wrong (I was reaching over with my upper body to drag my lower body round). I already had a pregnancy pillow, which was helping me to some extent. She also massaged my pelvis to put it back in line. No pain or discomfort at all (I was chatting away all the way through Smile).

She advised me not to walk for exercise, so now I do my pregnancy exercise DVD instead, and just take it easy with low impact movements. Apparently walking was making it worse.

She also gave me a belt to wear if I do need to walk to the shop or something, and it supports my hips and pelvis (feels super comfy).

They do regular group sessions apparently in many hospital physio departments (friends who live in another area have been to them). Ask your GP or midwife to refer you.

I agree that it's most likely SPD.

I had the same but from very early on in my second pg.

Please ask your MW for a referral to physio ASAP. My MW left me hanging for ages and I was in constant pain after a few weeks.

I'd never heard of SPD before but wish I had. I urge you to try the physio route as soon as possible.

What really helps me is a mattress topper - makes it more supportive somehow. An additional duvet on top of the mattress does a similar thing.

FeegleFion · 06/07/2013 10:22

I bought one of those really long pillows for between my legs and that brought a little relief.

gubbinsy · 07/07/2013 09:57

Thanks everyone. I think I will try and see the midwife this week and get physio if I can. Mattress topper too. Will try heat as soon as weather cools down - might struggle with that at the moment!

Could you try sleeping on the spare bed/sofa to see if it is your mattress that is causeing some of the problems? I travel a lot for work and some hotel beds are literally a real pain, my own bed was to for a week or so, OH flipped the mattress for me and that has helped loads.

RememberingMyPFEs · 07/07/2013 10:32

Gubbinsy - I have the same type of symptoms and right in my groin too (now 36 weeks) I splashed out on the dream genii and love it. The under bump support helps keep the lower back straight and the bit between the legs stops me actually shouting in pain when I move in bed. I'm awake every 2-3 hours for a pee do swap which side I'm sleeping on each time and my symptoms are a lot better.
Good luck Thanks

Only thing that helped me was a memory foam mattress topper. Got it cheap online, best £20 iv ever spent. I was getting the hip pain from quite early on due to spd and it stopped it all together at night.

More recently started to struggle with back pain at night because my bump is getting so big and making my back twist when I'm on my side. So I bought this pregnancy pillow and after the first two nights getting used to it, I love it! No more back pain!

Chickpea1983 could you share the correct way to turn over in the night? i'm doing a very ungainly haul of myself and i'm sure this isn't helping my hips...am also in agony when i wake up in the morning!

gubbinsy · 07/07/2013 16:46

I've tried the sofa but it slopes towards back so doesn't really help. Alas one bed flat so no spare bed (if you know anyone looking to buy a flat in Leeds then let me know as we're desperate to move before baby arrives!)

I'd be interested in correct way to turn as well. Just realised thy have got info on a physio type class at hospital but only first Tues of month which means waiting till Aug.Will call docs this week and see what they can do. Spent yesterday at Hyde Park to see Stones and hips really aching from standing (probably not wisest move but gig was great) but paradoxically slightly better last night although might just have been that I was knackered!

Massage helped me...my muscle on the outer buttock and hip was just rely tight. I also stretch every day. I put one leg over the other at right angles to the knee, pull up slightly and get a stretch on the muscle. Pillows didn't help me.

Squidwoman · 07/07/2013 19:30

Memory foam mattress. Amazing.

RobotBananas · 07/07/2013 19:46

You can get amazing memory foam mattresses that have duck down on top - stops it getting too hot

quackojuliet · 07/07/2013 20:25

There are lots of good tips on the pelvic partnership site - search it.
I've found relief for a few hours by sitting on tennis balls, so they massage the really tight knots in my glutes!
Pgp or spd needs to be tackled early so that it doesn't get worse. I've self referred to my hospital physio group and waiting for that in a few weeks.
I find that a lot of prenatal yoga moves aggravate it, as does breaststroke, sitting cross legged or crossing legs.
Also I need to avoid standing for long periods so have had to sit a lot at work (usually need to stand most of the time)
I got a dreamgenii pillow at tk maxx for a bargain but don't rate it that much - not much stuffing in it really and I use that plus an extra pillow between my legs to keep hips straight, but am still woken by stabbing pains in hips.

gubbinsy · 08/07/2013 12:11

Thanks to you all. I've spoken to GP and midwife and being referred to physio. Hopefully they can give me some exercises etc to help.
