Whooping cough vaccine help

hi, I'm 26 weeks pregnant and trting to decide whether to get vaccinated. Normally I'm very pro-vaccination but can't help feeling put off by the lack of safety data and horror stories online.
I had serious whooping cough myself as a baby and was very poorly so obviously significant exposure to my immune system.
So my question is will I still have my own immunity Or do I need a vaccine anyway?
Thanks in advance.

I had WC a few years ago and was told I still need the vaccination.

You apparently still need the vaccine. I had it with this pregnancy as I reasoned that I would be giving the baby the vaccine directly at 2 and3 months (I think...) so why not have it myself? And I am quite a big worrier about these things. (My 2 yr old has had single measles vaccine for example. )

I had whooping cough when I was a baby and was advised I should still get the vaccine. My personal opinion is that it would be wise to get it - cases of the illness soared last year and it can be fatal (and is always horrid). I wouldn't want to go through what my mother did with me, or put other families at risk by not having the vaccine.

I had it at 32 weeks - felt dreadful for 24 hours, then totally fine!

U need the vaccine to protect baby not you hun.

You will feel a bit flu like for 24-48 hours and for me and a couple of ppl on here, baby's movements will be subdued for about the same time. The biggest issue is the lump on my arm, its about ping pong ball size and tender but tbh the risks if baby gets whooping cough versus me feeling crap for a few days is a non issue. Its not a live vaccine so there really ate very limited risks

I had the vaccine 2 week ago no ill affects what so ever apart from feeling like my arm was gonna drop off for two days!

MightBeMad · 06/07/2013 10:05

I had it just week and arm was mildly tender for a day but no swelling, or other side effects at all. I waited until 36 weeks to have it on the basis baby is fully developed by then but in all likelihood it still gives me two weeks to develop the antibodies before delivery.

babyhmummy01 · 06/07/2013 10:25

Mightbe the vaccine isn't about giving mum immunity, you will already be immune from your own vaccinations. It is purely to give baby immunity in early days as whooping cough can be fatal in babies.

There was a thread on this a few weeks ago....kicked off somewhat. I had the vaccine with no I'll effect. Please have it, whooping cough can kill.

Longfufu · 06/07/2013 11:31

Ill effect...rather :)

Hi thanks for the replies, like I said I'm generally very provaccine, I just wanted to check whether my own immunity from previously having whooping cough would be high enough to protect baby without a booster. It looks like a no so I'll definitely be having it. I'm not worried at all about actually having the injection myself, only that I've read quite a few threads about stillbirths etc after having the vaccine. Probably coincidence but its hard to feel confident when there is no safety data...Thanks again.

Agree with what's been said earlier... have it. It's to protect baby in the first few months until its own immune system can be boosted.

I felt a bit iffy for a couple of days, and for me the site on my arm took a week to fully recover, but I'd do it again.

TarkaTheOtter · 07/07/2013 05:08

I think you have to have exposure to the vaccine/illness whilst pregnant to pass on immunity to wc to the baby.

3boys3dogshelp · 07/07/2013 08:02

Thanks farms that is exactly what I needed to know.
