Boy or girl ? are they right?

Up to our 20 week scan we were convinced we were having a girl beacuse the heart rate had been 155+ and our midwife had made comment - sounds like a girl. Everyone said 'oh you look like your carying a girl' even to the point my dad told a shop assistant he was buying clothes for his grandaughter! At our 20 week scan we had a student synographer and they wouldn't tell us what we were having (hospital policy). We had to go for another scan at 22 weeks to get final measurements and had a different synographer (not a trainee). I asked her if she could hint what we were having and she let us have a look and my husband exclaimed its a boy! The synographer outlined something on the screen (i couldn't see clearly) and continued to say 'he' for the rest of the scan. Has anyone been told they were having a boy and its been wrong? I want to be confident that i am thinking of our baby in the correct way!!!

Friends and family all guessed I was having a boy cause of shape etc but I did a reserach thing in the hospital where and got a hour long video - 3 sessions of 20 mins, of the baby, and saw it was def a girl. Didnt tell anyone though. I would believe the scan before old wives tales and hopefully the baby will be lying in a better position in your next scan!

We were told that DD2 was a boy, we didn't buy anything blue but we had a real shock when there was nothing between her legs! The best thing is to try not to think about it at all. It'll be a lovely surprise either way. Smile

I was told the sex by the hospital with both mine and it turned out to be right both times. I wouldn't believe old wives tales at ALL though.

Sex on scan isn't 100% accurate. I have seen the 'wrong' sex baby be delivered after scan report. Definitely do not believe old wives tales either. The heart rate one is very variable IME

At hospital, they said to me that they were 95% certain, but they have been known to be wrong!

I wouldn't take it as read that you are carrying a boy :)

We had scan yesterday and told it is a boy which I still can't believe as my pregnancy has been so like DD1 - very sick etc whereas with DS felt great. Can they really be wrong?! I thought it was far more likely to get it wrong with a girl, especially if the willy is hiding. Maybe we will be surprised at the end!

I have 2 of each - and only found out last time. No. 4 was a girl and at the scan they showed us anatomy and said there was no doubt at all it was a girl. i was slightly nervous - but did buy pink - and they were right. I was really posting to tell you though that my 1st and 3rd pregnancies were very similar - 1 girl, 1boy, as were my 2nd and 4th - 1 girl one boy. with no 3 - a boy everyone told me it was shaped like a girl etc. I wouldn't necessarily take similar pregnancies as an indicator

I was strapped up to monitors during early stages of labour with DD and 4 different MWs said I was having a boy because of the low heart rate. They were quite surprise when she came out a girl!

apronstrings · 08/06/2006 15:17

we read some research on the heartrate thing and it is supposedly very unreliable

dewmeadow · 08/06/2006 15:18

in mt last pregnancy, the heartrate was skipping along at a fair rate and he was a boy.

My SIL was told that she was expecting a boy so they refered to the bump as Samuel but when their fourth daughter was born they found a more suitable name...

Sometimes things are not as they appear! I am sure that you will fall in love with your baby regardless of gender. Congratulations and enjoy the next 18 or so weeks.
