How on earth am I going to push that out?? I am only 5ft 2 and really petite. I really hope they are wrong on that one as it hasnt put me in the most positive frame of mind for the birth... Anyone else had the same and the baby was smaller/had a positive birth??

Scans can be very inaccurate. I'm 5ft and very petite. With DS1 I was told at about 35 weeks that he'd be around 9lb at full term. I was Confused and Shock He was 6lb10oz when he was born Grin I still ended up having a section, but my experience shows their estimates are often far from accurate.

insanityscratching · 03/07/2013 20:27

Dsis had a scan because she had no visible bump at 38 weeks and MW was concerned baby was very small. She was told at scan baby was very small not expected to be 5lb at term and was told to attend for monitoring. She gave birth en route to the hospital the following day (precipitous labour), dn weighed 9lb 6oz. I tend to take predicted birth weights with a pinch of salt since then.

coppertop · 03/07/2013 20:31

Dd2's growth scan showed that she was going to be bigger than all her siblings. The heaviest had been 9lbs 8oz.

In the end she arrived almost on her due date, weighing a little over 7lbs.

You are all making me feel a bit more relieved! I was also thinking about all those redundant newborn clothes I have bought so fingers crossed I will be able to use them and the bambino isn't anywhere near 10lb!

I hope they are wrong and you have a lovely neat baby. My DS was a totally surprising 10lb10oz, and I will never forget the midwives almost wetting themselves laughing at my ex trying to dress him in a newborn babygrow - twas like trying to get a double duvet in single cover! so suggest you do take a few larger baby items too! Best of luck.

lljkk · 03/07/2013 20:56

Oh yeah, I had that, at the 34 week scan.
He was born at 39 weeks 6 lb 8 oz.
Don't believe everything they tell you!

BiBiBroccoli · 03/07/2013 20:57

My estimated weight was similar and resulted in an early induction. DS was a perfectly normal weight and induction was entirely unnecessary. Wasn't a problem ultimately as had a good birth but just an indicator of how unreliable growth scans can be!

Choccywoccydodah · 03/07/2013 21:00

I had a small bump all the way through and was sent for a growth scan around 35w. I was estimated to have around a 6lb baby. Ds was 8/13! God knows where he was hiding! I am 5'8" so he may have had a bit more room.
Like every one else has said, just take it with a pinch of salt. How big is your bump?

maja00 · 03/07/2013 21:02

Estimated weights can be a couple of lbs out so I wouldn't worry yet!

Don't worry though, you won't grow a baby that is too big for you to birth. I have also been told that big babies are easier to birth as they (and gravity) do more of the work for you.

AlmondFrangipani · 03/07/2013 21:05

I will be getting some 0-3 baby grows tomorrow just in case!

My bump is measuring for the correct week although I look quite big as I am so small. I am all out the front though and the songographer said the baby was pretty squished in there but not engaged yet...

My 35 week scan said my ds would be about 9lb but he was 12lb3oz Shock
They're notoriously inaccurate.

Habbibu · 03/07/2013 21:15

I'm 5 ft 4, and quite small. Dd was 10lb 11, ds 9lb 2. Both births fine and pretty straightforward. My mum is 5 ft 2 and small, and my sister was 9lb, me 10. Big babies run in our family, so I wasn't surprised, not was it difficult. That said, my obs said that scan are bad at predicting v big or v small.

SandraClegane · 03/07/2013 21:20

A sonographer once said to me that these 'measurements' can be out by 2lbs either way. So I don't know why they're doing them really! Seems pointless.
I had it the other way, he was estimated to be 8lbs 8 and a few days later was born at 10lbs 0.5.

Thesebootsweremadeforwalking · 03/07/2013 21:29

My 32 week scan said DD would be 9lb+, she was 7lb 5oz. To be fair the sonographer warned me that 10% either way was normal, bless her. By 36 weeks estimate had changed to 8lb. I measured right for my dates from 34 weeks onwards (had been a bit over since 28 weeks, hence the scans).

DD was born 50th centile weight but 75th centile head and she's long for sleepsuits too. I do wonder if the mismatch threw the growth scan estimates out?

ChablisLover · 03/07/2013 21:29

I had this too.

Even went for glucose test so that they could rule out diabetes.

But ds was 9lbs 15 when he was born so my scan was pretty accurate.

Sorry - that's not what you wanted to hear.

If it helps I'm 5ft 4 and it was a vaginal birth despite being prepped for a cs.

LaRosaBella · 03/07/2013 21:29

Aturtle.........over 12lb, that's bigger than my 16 week old dd is now!

aturtlenamedmack · 03/07/2013 21:50

I know larosa
He was the biggest baby that any of the people in the room had ever delivered, including people who had been midwives for over 20 years. Shock
I had an emergency section, but big babies run in my family and my Nana gave birth to a baby over 13lb at home in 1933, completely naturally. Now that's a brave women (and she went on to have another child too)!

LaRosaBella · 03/07/2013 22:08

Wow, that's some serious baby growing skills your family have!

maillotjaune · 03/07/2013 22:12

My sister had 2 friends due the sane time as her - one being monitored for being small for dates, the other was warned to expect a 10lb baby.

Both gave birth to very average sized babies.

themilkmonster · 03/07/2013 22:31

I didn't have a growth scan but was expecting a big baby as they run in my family. I ended up having a 9lber and I'm also 5ft 2. It was fine, don't worry! I took the up to one month/ up to 10lb clothes to hospital and they were fine, she got a good few weeks out of them before we moved up to 0-3. It will depend on where you buy the clothes from really as the sizing varies so much. Mothercare=big, Tesco, Asda= small, Next= somewhere in the middle. HTH Smile
