Royal Surrey (Guildford) hospital - positive experiences?

Hello

I wonder if anyone has any experience (or stories from friends) about the Royal Surrey hospital maternity care.

I am having my baby there (by c section) in August and have had a couple of not very positive experiences with staff there during my antenatal visits. One with a sonographer and one with a Consultant

Can anyone reassure me that there are nice people there as well and that it's not so bad?! (I had very positive antenatal experiences with my last pregnancy and then the actual event itself wasn't so great so I'm hoping the two don't necessarily reflect on each other.)

Thanks for reading.

I'm afraid I don't know much about the Royal Surrey hospital, but thought I'd pop in and say hi as I'm fairly local (having my baby at St. Peter's hospital!)
I know someone who will be having theirs at Frimley Park in October, but that's about it... If I hear of anyone going to Royal Surrey though, then I'll let you know :)

I'm going to the Royal Surrey- I don't have a lot of friends with babies but those that I do have said that their experience was positive. I've yet to hear a bad word about it..although my sonographer at my 20 week scan told me off seemed very annoyed that I already knew the gender due to a babybond scan! Confused

I'm also under the royal surrey. Their EPU has been brilliant - amazing care with both this pregnancy and my previous unsuccessful one.

I'm using an inpendent midwife as I'd like to have a home birth but she has been totally positive about the royal surrey - reminding me how lucky i am to be in this postcode and that if I had to be at hospital, then I'm in the right area :)

I have had two babies at the Royal Surrey and will be having another there in 8 weeks and have no complaints at all. The staff on the labour ward were brilliant. The supervisor of midwives runs a tight ship and I felt well looked after. All of my pregnancies have been considered high risk because of a clotting issue I have and my consultant led care had been very good. The post natal wards were not fun but they never are. hth.

Feeling really reassured, thank you all!

I had dd1 there in May 2010 and was there for a few days being induced before she arrived. I found the midwives to be lovely (and believe me I saw a lot!). The birth ended up being quite traumatic but I found the staff professional and caring. Never felt like anything was too much trouble. The HCAs were also brilliant. Agree with entwife though that the PN ward was chaotic. I was put on the high dependency c section recovery ward for 24 hours as I needed 45 mins OBS, but next day went to a private room for 2 nights which was much more pleasant. The midwives were happy to take baby in the night for cuddles so I could sleep for a while.

I'll be back there in Nov having dc2! :-)

I had my DS by c-section last year at the Royal Surrey Smile
I second that the staff and midwives are brilliant and couldn't be more helpful or supportive.
I'd also agree that the postnatal ward is...chaotic to say the least - its hot, busy, and hard to get anyone's attention - I spent one night there and then moved back to high dependency (long story, but my c section didn't go quite to plan!) then into a private room - I'd definitely suggest a private room if you are going to be there more than one night.
Also, re the section, different consultants have different approaches in theatre (4 friends had sections there in the same two week period) - some are relaxed and allowed you to see the baby lifted out, and before he/she is cleaned up, one persons consultant even took pictures of the baby coming out!! My consultant was a lot more old fashioned so I didn't get to see DS until he was cleaned up and wrapped up. So maybe ask about this / specific what you want with your midwife. I think I'd ask for a different consultant next time on this basis (not to mention that my complications were caused by the surgeon...! A very rare occurrence that could happen to any consultant so don't panic)
Good luck, you will be in excellent hands! Although mine wasn't a 'textbook' experience it was handled brilliantly, and friends who have had straightforward sections have been very happy with their experience too.

I will also be having a csection at royal surrey, last baby I had was at the midwife led unit at the grange in Petersfield where it was a very relaxed, natural birth so this will be completely different.
I will be getting a private room as am covered under health insurance but wanted it as other friends have said the pn ward isn't very good for a rest! Most of the sonographers I've seen were good but I can't say I'm that impressed with the consultants. It's got quite a good reputation anyway so fingers crossed we both have positive experiences! I will be on for section at end of July

as have moved to the area so a future baby coold be born there!

mavi5davi5 · 04/07/2013 21:21

I have had my previous 2 dc there and will be having my third in Nov, have had lovely positive experiences here, they are a lovely team. My most recent birth was last June so I doubt they will have changed too much, in fact the midwife team in antenatal clinic remembered me when I popped in at 16 weeks and were lovely and reassuring. There will always be people ready to share bad experiences, but I can't hear a bad word said about the RSCH when it comes to midwife/maternity unit. Hope this helps Grin

Hi. Did you share a room after the delivery? Do they have single rooms?
