20 weeks and nervous about movements

Hi

I am 20 weeks now and although I felt quite a few movements around 17 weeks they are very rare now. I can go upto 4 days without feeling anything at all and when I do feel it they are very slight flutterings rather than the bigger movements I was feeling earlier on.
Is this something I should be worried about? This is my first baby and I tend to worry and panic at the slightest thing as just want my DD to be healthy and safe.
My DH thinks I'm worrying unnecessarily but just wanted to see what you all think and of this is normal?
Sorry if I'm being daft and worrying for nothing I just can't help it xx

I had times like this around the same time as you. I was however on my feet a lot at work and found that baby was just being rocked to sleep. It was the evenings that I noticed the lack of movement however my midwife did assure me that they do sleep in there :) and are sometimes a bit quieter, especially if I was tired too. Also, MW said that as placenta grows and moves (mine was anterior) that some movements can be less pronounced until a bit later. Have you had your 20week scan? Do you know the position of your placenta?
If you're really concerned call your MW, it is quite unnerving but try not to worry too much, he/she will start kicking away more in no time :) x

No my scan isn't until next week when I will be 21 weeks and 3 days. I wish it was sooner.
I did have lot of strong movements until 18 weeks and DH could also feel them if he touched my tummy but now they are no where near the same. I work in a nursery so I am on my feet a lot and playing with the children etc so I never really noticed movements of a day. However she did seen to move a lot once I settled of a night especially when I first got into bed but that seems to have stopped. I just wish I could feel her move as its making me really scared that something is wrong. Think I may be a bit paranoid but can't help it xx

I'm 25 weeks now and had the same between 17 and 19 weeks. Had been feeling kicks for ages (2nd baby!) but suddenly ... Nothing!

Extensive research on the Internet says this wasn't uncommon and that baby was probably either kicking internally or the placenta was in the way.

I don't think they advocate kick counts until 27 weeks + as they don't class baby as consistent until then, but if you're worried, give your midwife a ring.

steakchipsandfriedeggs · 03/07/2013 16:11

I know that feeling, but honestly it felt like my little one had all but stopped moving at the same time. Like I said, it turned out that my placenta was anterior and as baby grew, the placenta moved up and 'muffled' all movement. Your scan next week will determine if this is the case for you.
You're not being paranoid at all, just a good mum! It's so easy for people to say 'everything will be fine' but only you know the movement patterns so its a bit scary when it all goes a bit quiet. But try not to worry yourself too much, easier said than done but you need to look after you too! :)
Take care x

Thanks for the responses. Going to try and wait til my scan and see what is going on then as don't really want to disturb midwife as she does kick now and again just not as often.
Hopefully all my worries will be out to rest next week. Only 7 days to wait!! Just going to try and keep myself busy until then lol xx

Hi mine was exactly the same. My bump suddenly disappeared too and totally freaked me out. I did call mw and popped in and she checked heart beat. It was really reassuring and she didn't mind at all. There is still a lot of space inside and baby can move to somewhere you can't really feel it. Plus being busy all day you may not notice some.
NEVER worry about calling the mw. That's what they are there for.

RJM17 · 03/07/2013 17:19

I know I should be able to call her but I had a few problems early on with bleeding etc upto about 16 weeks so spent a lot of time going in to the maternity ward and being checked. The last time I was there the lady doing my scan (i ended up having 5 scans in total because if bleeding and lavkmof water around the baby) made a comment something along the lines of "try not to being back again before your scan, you are here more than me" and laughed. It made me feel very awkward and now I am wary of contacting the hospital unless its an emergency. Silly I know but can't help but think if she thinks that then the midwife must do too!!
I am going to see how I go over the next few days and if no better I'll call them xx

*should have said lack of water x

RJM that was a thoughtless comment she made. Through all my pregnancies me MW always said if I was worried to get in touch, even if it sounds silly.

FWIW I had similar with my youngest two and they're fine. Sometimes they're turned with their face towards your spine so you don't feel kicks so much or they're having a quiet day.

If you're worried phone your MW and tell her what's happening. It'll put your mind at rest.

HMT13 · 03/07/2013 17:39

I was the same as you and went to see the midwife. She was so nice about seeing me and checked the heart beat. It's my first too and all the midwives I've seen have all said its quite normal to not have much movement yet.
Don't worry about ringing the midwife x

crazykat · 03/07/2013 17:43

I'd also mention the comment made by the lady doing the ultrasound. It was probably an ill thought out joke but it could deter someone else contacting them when they have a problem that needs treatment.

That wasn't meant to scare you, I'm sure your baby is just being lazy while they can.

RJM17 · 03/07/2013 19:06

Thanks I might call her tomora if I still haven't felt anything. Do I just call the community midwife number? As I don't have a certain midwife and see a different one each time x

I had this too, and I do have an anterior placenta. It may say on your notes from your 12 week scan what the position of your placenta is, mine did.
I honestly had quite a few wriggles early on, thn nothing for days! But just in the last few days (I am 20+4) she has suddenly got a lot stronger and now I seem to feel something every day. It's almost like she has only just got big enough to make herself known.
I still don't feel anything in the patch behind my placenta, only above/below/to the sides so perhaps you have the same?
Hope you get lots of wriggles soon!

RJM17 · 03/07/2013 19:49

Thanks pink I hope that's all it is. There isn't anything in my notes but I'll find out next Wednesday when I go for my scan xx

i posted exactly the same a few weeks ago and i too have anterior placenta which means it cushions the kicks and so felt a lot around 13-14 weeks (it's dc3 for me) then nothing for ages when i went for a private scan at 17 weeks , the sonographer told me my placenta is on the front so that's why i can't feel much, im 21 weeks now and feel lots of movements so just a few more days and you should feel lots. good luck xx

2Labradors · 03/07/2013 20:03

RJM17 ring the community midwife number and they will put you in contact with a midwife. Don't let 1 thoughtless comment deter you from seeking advice if you are worried. I had a tummy bug at 16-17 weeks pregnant and was really poorly for a few days. Even though I had my 16 week appointment the week before, I spoke to my midwife after the bug as I was worried and she listened to baby's heart beat again to put my mind at ease.

RJM17 · 04/07/2013 21:18

Thanx everyone. Not felt any movement again today so going to call them in the morning and just check xx

OP posts:
ForTheLoveOfSocks · 04/07/2013 21:30

Please call them now. Don't leave it until the morning. I don't want to alarm you but what if you waited and it was too late?

I lost count the amount of times I went in to be checked over.
