thyroxine and breast feeding

I've posted in feeding but thought I'd get more traffic here as I know there's a few thyroxine mums on here.

Today I was wondering about thyroxine and breast feeding so did a search and it seems that taking thyroxine can have an effect on the milk supply. Has anyone got any experience of this.
I'm currently on 200 mcg daily. It seems there is another drug that can be px too help to establish supply.
I'm 37 weeks and really only thought about ebf.
Any advice and experiences would be very welcome.

My dose isn't as high (50mcg before and after pg and 75mcg when pg)
I took my thyroxine as usual and didn't have any supply issues. I bf for 18 months xx

marking place as I want to know about his too - but I only take 50mgs.

Hi Tia! I am expecting dc2 and plan to bf as well. I am currently on 250mg thyroxine a day pre pg I was on 150mg. It's not worrying me too much about bf as i bf dc1 no problems. In fact I had enough milk I could have fed a few babies. So in my experience, my underactive thyroid gave me no issues in this area. Hoping it's the same this time too.

never had any issues - taking 150-200 - 3 pgs/babies

I am on 125mg and had problems bf actually - but never heard that as a possible explanation. Interested to hear that as a theory.

I am on 100 a day and i brestfed my DD for 11 months and my DS for 10 month, the only time i had supply issue is been when I decided to trust my bloody useless and incompetent GP who misread my blood test and decided to reduce my dose. I dried up almost overnight. Went back to my endocronologist who gave me the bollocking of my life, put me back to 100 a day and i had no problem whatsoever since

rosiedays · 01/07/2013 21:18

I ebf my first 2 but that was over 20 years ago and before thyroid problems. I'm not worried about techniques as had no problems before, hadn't even given it a second thought till today. obviously I've got too much time on my hands. Lol.

I was on 200 a day and had ridiculous oversupply with DD.

Good luck Smile

This thread is interesting!

I've just been diagnosed with an under active thyroid and started on thyroxine. I couldn't bf my DS (now 16 months) as I didn't make any milk. I'm hoping to be able to feed (hypothetical) no.2.

rosiedays · 02/07/2013 22:56

Thanks ladies.
It seems like it's only a problem if thyroid is not well managed. Glad i researched though as if there is a supply problem I'll know what to check first.

Someone I know is on thyroxine and had supply problems. However, she was prescribed it because she messed up her thyroid with anorexia as a teenager and still (imo) has issues around food and doesn't eat enough so perhaps it was that which affected her supply rather than the medication.
