What does a newborn wear

I know this is a silly question, but what does a newborn wear?
My baby is due in Nov, I'm not worried about giving birth, feeding and the general taking care of him but what should I be buying for him to wear?

Start me from him being naked...
a nappy,
then a baby gro? Long sleeved I presume for the winter, but do you put a cardigan over that? What about another layer on the bottom half?
Going out in his pram, do I put him in a snow suit or layer him up with clothes and snuggle him under a blanket?

Sorry for double post, but I should add I live in a top floor flat that has a tendency to be on the warm side

Mayan- same things as above just less. So on an average day baby popper vest and babygro ( even a slight breeze will get them cold so arms/ feet/ legs covered).
If its really hot just take the babygro off and they are fine in vest. I wouldn't bother with summer short babygrows etc as by the time they are 6-8 weeks old it will be end sept/ October and cold again anyway!

Buy lots of long sleeved vests and sleep suits. Possibly some cardigans if your house is cold, and snowsuits for outings.

I love a winter baby!

YY to bundlers at nighttime as Chipping mentioned, when they're tiny they poo in their sleep and a bundler is easier to change their nappy in without waking them. My DD wore those JL ones in the link and looked like Swee'Pea from Popeye... So cute!!

TakingTheStairs · 01/07/2013 19:46

Which was the bundler? Was there a link to that please?

Mayanbob - as suggested, stick to the one layer more than you rule. I was so worried about my July boy overheating that he ended up with hyperthermia. He was four weeks early, 5lbs and not feeding very well so his core temp never got high enough. Yes, that is very unusual but don't leave a tiny bubba in not many clothes, they can get chilled so quickly. I'd probably put a newborn in a babygro still but maybe without a vest if it is really hot. Do ask your midwife or health visitor at the time.

I bought my DN this (no, I do not work for this company!!!) - I'd loved my winter one so much, the summer version is light but keeps off the chill in shade or zircon. I'm not meaning to be alarmist, it's a minefield isn't it??!

oh i'm so delighted to have found this thread. our LO is due at the end of november as well and as a first time mum i'm feeling really clueless.

i did come across this which i might knit :) etsylink

Mayanbob · 01/07/2013 21:09

Thank you! donkey and greek :-)

I had my dd last November. I live in north Scotland, so maybe we're a wee bit colder than some of you might be.

In the day Dd was dressed in:
Nappy
Long sleeved vest with poppers at crotch
Socks
Sleep suit/babygrow

Occasionally, if it was really cold, tights instead of socks and wool cardigan.

At night:
Nappy
Capped sleeved vest with poppers at crotch
Babygrow/sleep suit
Wool blanket (I just didn't like putting her in sleeping bags when she was little)

We did have a heater in the room with us at night which I monitored to make sure she didn't get too warm.

I might be a bit dim, but before I had dd I didn't realise how cosy real actual wool is! I am now a convert and recommend Merino Kids for sleeping bags made from wool. Lightweight and cosy, not sweaty or synthetic!

MortifiedAdams · 01/07/2013 22:29

A good little outfit I would put on dd if we were just mooching round the house in the winter was a pair of tights and then a long sleeved popper vest over the top. Warm, no socks falling off, and if we wanted to go out, I just chucked her in her snowsuit.

TobyLerone · 02/07/2013 06:51

Janie, there are loads of free patterns for those on ravelry.com.

curlew · 02/07/2013 06:58

It depends. In my case, DC1- a careful choice from a wide selection of gorgeous, coordinated clothes, many of them lovingly hand made, hand dyed and completely unique. DC2- the nearest vaguely clean item that vaguely fit.

JanieLovesLuckySocks · 02/07/2013 08:00

Oh thanks Toby!! I had come across that website before but couldn't remember the name :) thanks!!

MammaGnomes · 03/07/2013 21:55

I like the look of the bundlers for night time. It will make me feel like I'm dressing baby for bed as I am planning to keep baby in a sleep suit through the day for as long as poss.
Do I just put it on over a nappy? Will it be warm enough with-ought a vest (end of sept baby)

Great thread btw!!! Grin

Eskino · 04/07/2013 16:49

notso that is the cutest thing I've seen in ages Smile

Eskino · 04/07/2013 16:56

Oh, I bought a little lambskin to put under her in the pram. She was really nice and toasty with that, I cut slits in it so I could use it in the carseat too.

Madratlady · 04/07/2013 17:02

Thanks for starting this thread OP, I've been puzzling over whether babies should have a vest under the babygro or not!

Our house gets very cold although I will be investing in a nice thick rug to put baby on on the floor and draught excluders so I don't have to worry about baby lying on a cold floor in a draught. I plan to have nappy, vest, babygro, cardigan and also socks or bootees.
