Hayfever in Pregnancy

I give up, I need your help!

I've suffered from hayfever for about 12 years, and manage it relatively well. I spend a lot of time outside for work and because I love being outside, so I can't just close all the windows and doors and stay inside for 2-3 months.

I'm currently 28 weeks pregnant and the late hayfever season has hit me with force.

I am "lucky" enough to be taking phenargen tablets for my pregnancy sickness which are antihistamine based (and on prescription), and able to use eye drops to try to ease some of the itching.

However, I am utterly miserable. The Pharmasist shrugged when I asked her if there was anything else I can use or take, and don't really want to take anything more on top of the phenargen.

My windows are closed at night (so I wake up boiling hot), I use vaseline around my nose to trap the pollen and shower/ change my clothes when I get in from outside.

Does anyone have any advice for non-prescription/ more natural remedies I can try?

:-(

My nurse looked at this in detail and Zirtek came up as one that could be used 'with caution' in pregnancy. I.e. it's fine.

Another sufferer here, I'm also 28 weeks pregnant and feel your pain! I've been using vaseline, etc and also using a bit of baby shampoo to wash around my eyes as they get really irritated and it's supposed to get rid of pollen from your eyelashes. Last couple of days I've been using Prevalin spray at night to avoid starting with an allergic reaction when I wake up to use the loo in the middle of the night. I got it from the chemists and it says on the side it's safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women. It feels a bit gross when I first spray it but it does seem to have helped. Good luck, this years hayfever has been really miserable!

I was given piriton to use but I appreciate you don't want any more antihistamines. Have you tried a saline nasal spray? I suggest making an appointment with the doctor and getting some advice, you can away you've spoken to the nurse but she doesn't seem to gave taken your concerns seriously.

RJM17 · 30/06/2013 11:25

My doctor gave me piriton but the old type that lasts 4 hours as this is safe in pregnancy as has been a lifesaver x

bigbong thanks fro that, just not sure if I can take that alongside the phenargen? :(

gremlin I will look up prevalin. Annoyingly I bought a nasal spray the other day as it didn't say "do not use is pregnant" on teh package but when I opened it the instructions said not to use in pregnancy !d;oh!

It is a miserable horrible season- I think it's been a late season and everything has released it's pollen all at once.

caitycat I think dr appt is the only option if I can't find anything more "natural" that works! I guess us pregnant ladies spend half our lives at the drs!!

thanks all.

Any antihistamine with Loratadine in is safe as well :) they're usually the cheaper ones, and may take a few days to kick in as it's a one a day pill. Talk to your midwife though as sometimes if the benefits outweigh the cons then they'll sometimes let you take the ones you'd usually take. For instance, I usually take flixonase for my sinuses which says you shouldn't take when pregnant HOWEVER because without it I wasn't sleeping properly the GP said I could as not taking it affected the baby's health more (tiredness which resulted in loss of appetite etc...)
Also, there's tgat Pirinese spray which you could have look at, it's new and might be suitable for pregnant people as it's not a pill being ingested.

Babybump26 · 30/06/2013 11:38

My GP prescribed me a beconase nasal spray, I believe it's steroid based? But she said as it was a local/topical treatment it wouldn't be absorbed into the body or do baby any harm, it has really reduced the symptoms! I can now sleep in bed without becoming so blocked up from it, which is lovely as I had to spend a few nights sleeping upright on the sofa as I kept choking!! Hope you get it sorted Smile

PorkPieandPickle · 30/06/2013 16:50

I'm 17 wks pregnant and was really suffering badly. I went to docs and she prescribed beconase and she said the same as babybumps doctor. Feeling much relief from gayfever symptoms :)

PorkPieandPickle · 30/06/2013 16:51

Or even hayfever Blush

fl0b0t · 30/06/2013 16:53

Gayfever :-) lol!

Thanks all, will pop to th Drs next week if I can and just check it all out! I am feeling the lack of sleep is very ungood as the tiredness is bringing the nausea back!

Try Haymax. It's a little gel that you put inside your nostrils. It is safe in pregnancy.

It's the only thing that helps DH and he's tried everything. If you were to look for the man least likely to use anything 'alternative' you'd find DH yet he actually admits this product works. You can but it in Boots.
