Starting to buy baby clothes & a friend of mine suggested Ebay there are lots of lovely things at great prices but I was a but Hmm about buying second hand for a newborn. Would you? Or are you? Moneys not a massive issue although it could be better spent rather than on cute baby stuff! I just feel a but tight buying her loads of used stuff just because it's cheap!

I don't see a problem with it - it'll all be washed, and has probably hardly been worn given how fast the little darlings grow!

SweepTheHalls · 27/06/2013 16:53

Everything was second hand for my boys!

jimijack · 27/06/2013 16:54

okay, tbh there is absolutely nothing wrong wth 2nd hand. I found that it is all like brand new for loads of reasons:

  1. i got tons of new gorgeous stuff bought for me, so much my baby didnt wear even half of it, it went on ebay.

  2. mine lived in baby grows, still does at 6 months old because outfits, especially new born are a pita. They need ironing, i refuse to iron anything...im too fecking tired.

  3. They grow SO fast, it fits for a day.

Its all relative and very personal...shrugs

extracrunchy · 27/06/2013 16:57

She will never know the difference and half of it will only get used for 5 minutes before it's too small. Second hand makes perfect sense.
(Also better for the environment.)

FoofFighter · 27/06/2013 16:59

I think about 70% of the stuff we have ready for our new baby is secondhand, some from family, some from friends, some from strangers. I don't see a problem with it, they are in clothes/Moses basket for such a short time, it's all washed thoroughly anyway.

I feel some people can be very snobby about secondhand stuff but yet would accept things from family, whats the difference?

I'd rather save my money for a better pram/cot, or for days out when theya re older etc

FoofFighter · 27/06/2013 17:00

I mean shock horror I even have secondhand cloth nappies! clutches imaginary pearls

FoofFighter · 27/06/2013 17:03

And if you save some stuff for another baby in the future technically that's secondhand too Wink

jimijack · 27/06/2013 17:04

minger foo.....Grin

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 27/06/2013 17:04

Yes of course - it'll be crapped and puked all over as soon as it's worn anyway. Can't be bothered with ebay personally but between charity shops, friends' hand-me-downs and NCT Nearly New sales (well worth checking out), mine were in second hand clothes all the time.

It all got passed on one way or another once it was finished with apart from the worst sleep suits which became dusters.

jimijack · 27/06/2013 17:06

I wanted new for my pfb, thinking back. ds2 has ended up with all handmedowns, happily. Saved a fortune.

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 27/06/2013 17:07

Mind you sleepsuits and vests get so trashed (at least mine did) and are so cheap to buy, that those were mostly new. I freecycled a load of those that were too scruffy for any charity shop to take.

RobotBananas · 27/06/2013 17:10

Loads of second hand newborn stuff, especially clothes, is barely worn. You can get loads of practically new stuff on eBay - some of it will still have labels on.

The only thing you really need to buy new is the cot mattress and the car seat. So much new baby stuff gets hardly any wear at all and you can save an absolute fortune.

theDudesmummy · 27/06/2013 17:11

I bought (and later resold) tons of lovely newborn stuff on ebay, can't see any problem with it. Much only gets worn for a very short while!

MurderOfGoths · 27/06/2013 17:12

Most of DS's newborn was second hand, was great because most of it was as good as new but for the fraction of the price! There's a car boot sale nearby, so I stocked up on babygros and vests for 50p each, and the majority were pristine!

mizu · 27/06/2013 17:16

NCT sales were heaven to me when my DDs were younger, they are fab - massive queues for them but you get some great clothes. I used to go every season and get some lovely, lovely things.

Nothing wrong with second hand, it is all hardly worn really.

DoingTheSwanThing · 27/06/2013 17:19

Definitely! Also, the smaller the clothes, the better condition they tend to be in. Probably because they've been worn for about a week.

Another one with babies in mainly second hand nappies. Actually, some of them I know to be 4th-hand!

ChunkyPickle · 27/06/2013 17:27

Save your money for the cute stuff, get second hand practical bits!

If you can get a bundle, get a bundle - they are lifesavers since they tend to have a range of brands sizes so you can always find something roughly right for them to wear.

I had 2 boxes of baby clothes that a friend gave me, saw DS through from birth to about 6 months with just a few babygrow purchases to top up what was there.

Dollybird86 · 27/06/2013 17:28

Thanks so much for all ur replys!
I don't see anything wrong with it my mum was just a bit Confused! I would rather save the money for mat leave/ stuff she needs later on.
I'm going to looking to finding an NCT sale near me to.

When I got pregnant my mam said to me "Accept everything but blows." And I've very much taken that approach. We have had so much for dirt cheep or even free that my son has been much better dressed than I could hope to afford. For example, I buy stuff from Matalan and Tesco but recieved Gap and next jeans for free

rockybalboa · 27/06/2013 17:31

Yep, fine. This baby has got all second hand stuff from eBay because I got rid of all our old stuff. And if I hadn't it would have been 3rd hand from his two older brothers anyway.

Elkieb · 27/06/2013 17:32

I bought and buy a lot of second hand clothes from charity shops for my DS. He has a great wardrobe that I couldn't afford new, and hopefully will do baby number 2 if and when we get round to it Grin

Purplemonster · 27/06/2013 17:38

Virtually everything I've got for my PFB is second hand. I bought a couple of bundles of clothes on EBay and they're pretty immaculate I don't know how anyone would notice they're not new. I just don't see the point when they're going to grow out of it so quickly. It's not even the money, it just seems so wasteful and unnecessary, they're only going to be in newborn sizes such a short amount of time and by the time they've puked on their 5th baby grow of the day are you really going to care? My mum was funny about it as well (especially about the second hand pram shock horror) but I don't care, it saves money and it's better for the environment.

TarkaTheOtter · 27/06/2013 20:42

I found second hand stuff for little babies (I.e. pre-weaning and messy play age) was always great condition. NCT sales are great especially if you are a member and get in early. We got a few newborn/0-3 bundles on ebay too and whilst not everything included was to my taste they still ended up good value.

Ellypoo · 27/06/2013 23:00

Pretty much everything we have for our baby is second hand - except mattresses and presents. Don't see a problem with it as long as you wash stuff first (but you would with brand new stuff anyway).
Babies grow so quickly, clothes don't wear out so why not re-use them!

5madthings · 27/06/2013 23:03

The only exception to second hand is mattress must be new (SIDS guidelines) and car seat (unless you get it from a friend and know it has not been in an accident)

Everything else get secondhand, its nice to get some new bits but yoiu may as well save money whilst you can, trust me you need it as they get older!
