I think they only recommend having a certain amount of C sections

ShatnersBassoon · 27/06/2013 14:25

I think there's a recommended maximum number of C-sections you should have. I think I've heard two, three and four given as the maximum number from various sources!

Speak to your consultant about it, but don't mention Jordan Grin

Moominsarehippos · 27/06/2013 14:26

Isn't it three? I suppose its to do with scar tissue.

My sister suggested getting a zip installed in case she wanted more (she had 3 Cs).

ubik · 27/06/2013 14:28

The risk of complications increases, the more CS you have. I've had 3 and surgeon said they start to get a bit nervous at CS4. But everyone is different.

I think that it's because the risks increase with each section (scar tissue, risk of rupture etc increases). But I have anecdotally heard of women who have had 6+ sections although they are probably advised against this.

Nicknamegrief · 27/06/2013 14:32

It all depends on the amount of scar tissue/damage previous sections have caused.

It is a bit individual but 4 seems to be the most, most consultants support. It has changed because they used to go in vertically and the bikini cut is a lot better.

My friend has had six and while she is done, the consultants did not say she shouldn't have any more, where as a friend had so much scar tissue after her 4th they had to give her a hysterectomy.

I had my third section and the consultant told me while I was on the table I had next to no internal scaring and they could see no problem with me having another one.

Susie888 · 27/06/2013 14:34

my husbands sister was told that she would need to be cut up the middle (instead of below the bikini which I believe is standard) if she had her 3rd baby c-section (she had already had 2). I am not sure if this is standard

newmumsuchfun · 27/06/2013 14:37

thank you all. I have never quoted Jordan before by the way. Thanks for all your answers. I would be overjoyed with 3 so I can stop panicking. Grin

I have a friend who had 5 c-sections, the last one being twins. She said that each time she had a section, the surgeon assessed the quality of the muscle and scar tissue on the uterus, and told her whether or not another pregnancy was advisable.

meditrina · 27/06/2013 14:48

By the time you've had 3 sections, they do start recommending no more.

But some women do go on to further PGs (by accident or design) and the HCPs will deal with whatever happens.

SandraClegane · 27/06/2013 14:48

A friend's sister has had 4 babies by c/s; I'm about to have my third (well I've still got half a year to go!).
As you've only had one so far though you could always try for a VBAC next time?

QueenoftheHolly · 27/06/2013 14:54

Sorry to sabotage but I'm also interested in how long you should wait before the next pregnancy after a section.
I heard two years but confused if that's prev birth date to next due date, or birthdate to next conception Confused

Ie when can we start ttc again?!

Nicknamegrief · 27/06/2013 15:02

I was told to wait a year before trying to conceive.

My smallest gap is 19months between pregnancies (number 1 was 2yrs 4mths when I had number 2).

newmumsuchfun · 27/06/2013 15:04

I had no idea there was a time you had to wait? does anyone have any more info on this?
i was also under the impression that if you have a bad first birth + emergency c section i wont be able to have a natural birth again? am i wrong?
thanks everyone this is fab.

When I had my first, EMCS I was told I could try for a VBAC (they did look at the reasons for the EMCS- true knot in cord). I did have a successful VBAC. My third child was another EMCS but i was aiming for another VBAC and I had an ELCS for my fourth. They recommended a planned section for number 4.

MoominsYonisAreScary · 27/06/2013 15:13

I became pg 8 weeks after ds3 was born by csection, after first talking to the consultant who said it was fine. He said they would only advise me to wait if I was going to try for a vbac

MoominsYonisAreScary · 27/06/2013 15:20

They say you are more at risk of the scar rupturing during labour if you become pg less than a year after a section if you are intending on vbac

embaker112 · 27/06/2013 15:41

I think it's more to do with scar tissue and the complications of making incisions through it. On 16 kids and counting one woman had had 4 or 5 csections!

TheCatIsUpTheDuff · 27/06/2013 16:03

My sister has had 4. Her family is complete now, but she hasn't mentioned being told not to have any more.

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom · 27/06/2013 16:08

There is no inherent reason not to try for a VBAC after one section with a bikini line cut (the old 'once a section always a section advice dates back to the old vertical incision). After two they get more nervous due to the risk of rupture in the scar tissue, and of course any woman could have personal complications which make a section advisable. But as a rule, many areas will even encourage VBAC after a single section.

MoominsYonisAreScary · 27/06/2013 17:04

Depending on the section, I have a bikini line scar but also had vertical cuts in my womb with my first section so my notes say it's not advisable to attempt vbac.

Norfolknway · 27/06/2013 21:59

My friend has had 4. They don't recommend any more
