Has anyone used an Ikea cot? Is the HENSVIK Cot good or which would you recommend?
Also anything else worth buying (defo getting the highchair but not yet). The spice racks are something I am going to pick up and paint to use as bookshelves.
Thanks

They look fine to me except they don't have a drop side mechanism. But I have a bad back and am fairly short. My DH for example has no problem lowering DD into the cot (at the lowest setting) without dropping the side.

VinegarDrinker · 27/06/2013 11:06

We have the Gulliver because you can take the side off and use it as a bedside cot or later a cotbed. We've been really pleased with it - to the extent that we've just bought a second for DC2 as DS1 is still in his as a cotbed.

We have also got their changing table & mat, bedding, loads of cheap flannels, Antilop highchair bibs and toys.

Rosenip · 27/06/2013 11:06

I was thinking about Ikea cots too - but wondering if their matresses are standard size and would work with other brands of bedding - their adult matresses are an awkward Ikea size...

We love ours - it's on it's second baby! We bought one with the removable side do it's been used as sidecar cot, normal cot and toddler bed. 4 years old now and still going strong.

CitrusyOne · 27/06/2013 11:10

We bought all stuva furniture and stuva cot and the changing unit. That's not stuva but I can't remember what it is? Gulliver maybe? It's all fab, dd is 8 months now and was in the cot from 3 weeks cos she hated the Moses basket. I love the storage drawers under the cot for bedding and blankets, and I love the flexibility of the stuva furniture. We had a wardrobe with two hanging rails and drawers under and then the shorter unit with shelves at the top and a cupboard underneath- inside the cupboard are the basket things that pull out on runners- they're brill- love the lot.

In hindsight I might not have got the changing unit as we didn't use it for very long and now dd is more mobile I change her on the floor. Having said that, it was useful for the first few months? Maybe see if you can get a second hand one or sell yours when you're done with it?

What I liked about the drive stuff is we can add to it as dd grows and it's neutral enough as she gets older. Oh, and fairly cheap!

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 27/06/2013 11:11

We have used other brands of sheets with no issues.

mrspaddy · 27/06/2013 11:11

I just looked at the Gulliver one.. it is nice. I am fairly short though so the drop side issue might be a problem. Have they the teething rails on them? I don't live anywhere near an Ikea so weighing up the options. Saw a lovely cot on amazon too.

Re: mattress sizes, the lovely helpful lady in our ikea told us that they're European size, and that mamas and papas and mothercare stock bedding to fit. We bought a couple of fitted sheets from ikea and the duvet and pillow, and cover and pillow case for when dd is bigger but she's still in gro bag at the mo.

Ikea hooded towels are supposed to be good- big.

VinegarDrinker · 27/06/2013 11:14

We used it on the highest setting until he was pulling to sitting, by which stage leaning over and trying to put a sleeping baby in undisturbed was much less of an issue! They have teething rails you can buy and add for a couple of quid but tbh I am not sure of the point of them?! DS never tried to chew the cot.

mrspaddy · 27/06/2013 11:18

ah thanks vinegar.. yes if we keep it up high it shouldn't be a problem.. DH keeps on about teethmarks.. he said they all wrecked furniture when they were little Confused ha ha

Don't worry about a drop side (or lack of one). I'm short too and we only ever dropped the side of the cot when changing the sheets - a lot of them make too much noise to be any use the rest of the time.

Have a look at the Stuva one - it's got storage drawers underneath as well and you can take the side off and turn it into a cot bed.

lightrain · 27/06/2013 11:26

We have the cheapest of cheap cots from ikea - sniglar - as a temporary one for in our room while Moses basket is too small. Cot bed we have is too big to fit in our room.

We are really pleased with sniglar. Have converted it to be a bedside cot by taking the side off and pushing mattress right up against bed mattress (towel at other side to pad). We can slide DC into his cot after he's finished feeding at night. It works really well.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 27/06/2013 11:36

mrspaddy I think the ikea sizes are the same as the mothercare ones. I bought a mothercare drop side one in the end, and it's all in metric. I've looked in John Lewis and all their cots are metric sizes too. You can check on their websites.

I have a cotbed and DD is still in it and she's 2.3yr now. We only took it to the lowest setting when she can pull up. That is around 12mo. I'm 160cm and I definitely can't reach the bottom of the cot with baby/toddler in my arms without the side lowered. And I wouldn't want to drop my DD into the cot, iyswim? I still lower her down, like a baby, to her grobag and zip it up when I tug her in at night. You can test it by trying to lower a pillow or teddy in sleeping position to a cot at the lowest setting. Though if you are not buying a cotbed, that might not be as much an issue?

OneLittleToddleTerror · 27/06/2013 11:38

I mean she's still in the cotbed, with the cot bars at 2yo. She still rolls off normal beds. We tried for 2 weeks to get her to sleep without the bars a few months back and it just ended up with us having 2 weeks of sleepless night. She was again rolling off the bed every night when we went on holiday last week. I don't know how other toddlers stay in their toddler beds!

BigPigLittlePig · 27/06/2013 11:43

I bought the Hensvik one and matching wardrobe and changing unit because it is pretty Blush - but has worked fine for us. DD is a nightmare to settle to sleep, so I did once lament something along the lines of "this is why I should have got a drop side cot instead of the pretty one" as I performed a contortionists trick....but that was thankfully a fleeting ishoo. We bought a couple of fitted sheets and the mattress protector at the time so haven't had to worry about sizing etc.

VinegarDrinker · 27/06/2013 11:45

OneLittle DS has a bedguard keeping him in!

Kelly1814 · 27/06/2013 11:46

love the hensvik cot and plannig on buying one this weekend!

they seem such great value in compariosn to everywhere else and i like the style of them.

Teaandflapjacks · 27/06/2013 11:48

I think you can put them at two heights? I would go for the one that you can then later convert into a cot bed if you like it. This way you are sorted for a few years. BTW Ikea adheres to very strict safety guidelines, so when we move up from our cradle thing, we will be buying an Ikea cot bed.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 27/06/2013 12:03

vinegardrinker I have the lindam bedrail, but DD still manages to drop off from the bit of the cotbed that's not guarded. She doesn't sleep like adults, but turns around and around in her cot like a baby still. I'm sure she'll learn to sleep properly in time.

crikeybadger · 27/06/2013 13:43

Have just ordered the Gulliver. We live a two hour journey away from Ikea but I am getting it delivered and it's only costing ten pounds - far cheaper than I expected. Also bought the mattress and some muslins.

Hoping to turn it in to a co sleeper cot, fingers crossed it fits with out bed height. Smile

syl1985 · 27/06/2013 13:51

If you're worried about safety and stuff like that. Everything that's being sold at the ikea is safe.
There might be weight restrictions.

But if you use their products the way they say they should be used. Then they're safe and won't quickly brake.
In case you find something wrong with an ikea product let them know asap.

But that's always and with any product that you buy at any shop.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 27/06/2013 14:45

Crikey- it won't be the right height, you will need to drill new holes. It's very easily done though. Then you just push the mattress over so it is wedged firmly against yours and stuff the far side with rolled up towels. We braced the fourth side ( the one against the bed) with the low bar you put on to make it into a toddler bed. I know people have just missed off the fourth side entirely though.

VinegarDrinker · 27/06/2013 14:49

Ours is the right height by chance so yours may be too, but if not it is easy to add new holes. We've attached it to our bed with elastic 'spider' thingies this time, last time we did it with cable ties IIRC.

crikeybadger · 27/06/2013 16:07

Thanks for that, and glad it's not tricky to adapt. Just need a baby to out in it now!

DaveMccave · 27/06/2013 17:16

Ikea do a genuine sheepskin rug for 30 quid! They are 50 quid in John Lewis. We also got their wooden baby gym which I think looks really nice. I don't like all the bright plastic ones, although they do have a fold away fabric one which isn't too garish too. I got a sleeping bag too but that won't fit straight away. Going to get the antilop high chair nearer the time. Most of the weaning cutlery I got for dd is still going strong 6 years later so I recommend that too.
