I am 24 weeks & just had a letter asking if I would be willing to participate in the next series..... On the one hand I thought it might be nice to record it.... On the other hand I don't know if having a camera crew there in labour or my friend/family seeing my perineum appeals wwyd?

Will the NHS be recieving any money for hosting the production company & all their equipment? Does anyone know how much they get?
I think the commercial aspect is an important consideration. I would like to understand how much money they make from selling the programme in comparison to how much they pay for access to the hospital.
I love OBEM BTW but maternity services are under pressure in Bristol so I'd like to know how much they are chipping in .

notso · 27/06/2013 16:40

No way! I don't think they would bother with me anyway.
DS2 was born only 10 mins after getting to the hospital and DS3 didn't even make it and was born on the bathroom floor!

RoomForALittleOne · 27/06/2013 16:42

Just to add, don't think that being on OBEM guarantees you one-to-one care as I was never assigned a midwife and they edited out the bit with the midwife in charge flapping and telling me not to push when we pressed the buzzer to say that I was about to deliver. But, as a plus for the editors, I insisted that they included the first breastfeed as it really was and they did do that. There was definitely no airbrushing going on.

I'd do it, I think it's a fab programme and really educational. I think it would benefit from more normal second/third/fourth births from established families though, there seems to be a disproportionate number of teenage first time Mums on it (maybe they aer just more likely to say yes than those of us who are older and wiser). My local maternity hospital was asked to be on the BBC programme but refused, I would have definitely agreed to be filmed for DS's birth. Even though his birth was dramatic I would have happily let it be shown, although that's easy to say when the outcome was good.

I think the couple who lost a child on it were fanastically brave to allow that to be shown, and I thought it was handled well.

stubbornstains · 27/06/2013 17:03

Three cheers for you and your breasts room!

HahaHarrie · 27/06/2013 18:06

No way, but I appreciate the women who are brave enough to do it. I was an avid viewer when I was pregnant. It helped me make the decision to have a water birth. I do wish there was a greater variety of backgrounds of the women on the show though.

FeelingHorse · 27/06/2013 18:44

No way, but then again I'm a teacher and not sure I'd want my teenager students and their parents seeing me in that way Wink

I did have my water birth filmed though. DP set up a camera and just let is run for the last hour. I love watching it back, so many lovely memories!

amazingmumof6 · 27/06/2013 18:47

actually the amount of rubbish, swearing and other things I said on gas & air....most of it would have been beeped out!Grin

whiteandyellowiris · 27/06/2013 19:18

no way

TwelveLeggedWalk · 27/06/2013 19:48

With hindsight I'd have loved to have had mine filmed, DH missed it and I went under GA, so it would be nice to have know what was going on!
We would've made proper dramatic telly too Smile

I gave birth on tv twice. I'm glad I did it, it's a wonderful record to have. I have the rushes as well so I have a record of much more of the labours than was shown on the prog.

bigbuttons · 27/06/2013 20:17

it wasn't obem though. It was for progs specifically for home births. I was filmed at times from 37 weeks onwards and also did webcam thing recording my feelings and experiences.

RobinBedRest · 27/06/2013 20:30

Was that the homebirth diaries bigbuttons?

bigbuttons · 27/06/2013 21:27

yes and one with a strange title called 'home grown babies' I couldn't figure that one out as all babies are home grown surely?Confused

FadBook · 27/06/2013 21:33

We don't plan a second child but I would have loved to have been filmed throughout.

My DP got snippets of film and its intriguing for me as I did natal hypnotherapy so don't remember a good chunk of it (zoned out!)

If I was having a second, I'd love to be on OBEM!

Go for it Grin

I would love to have been filmed in labour - but I appreciate that I am odd in that I actively enjoy giving birth. Two of mine were entirely drug-free (no gas & air etc) and I would love to demonstrate that it is possible to stay completely on top of pain without drugs even in a very medicalised setting and even with induced labours.

Maggie111 · 28/06/2013 01:10

cravingcake We had almost the same labour!

I gave birth 10 weeks ago, and what surprised me the most was how horrible I was during labour - one of those women you watch and think "God, it's not that bad love!" and the doctors and midwives all roll their eyes out of sight Blush

I'm so glad no one could judge me but my husband and the staff!

FanjolinaJolie · 28/06/2013 03:05

Not a chance.

I will keep my pixelated foof to myself thank you very much.

SomethingNarstyInTheWoodshed · 28/06/2013 08:43

Birth is not a spectator sport.

Graciescotland · 28/06/2013 09:23

I can't believe you don't get wadges of cash for being on the show. I wouldn't do it personally .

CuppaSarah · 28/06/2013 09:25

See the whole 'oh my god my bum and lady bits and poop will be on tv' bit doesn't bother me at all. I have no dignity.

But the idea of everyone seeing my labour face, and hearing the weird things the gas and air makes me say. I can't bare the thought of it.
'THE BABIES IN GUILDFORD(I didn't give birth in or live in guildford, there was no mention of guildford ever) 'IT'S OK IF SHE'S GINGER THOUGH!' 'I KNOW IT'S THE GAS AND AIR BUT MY FACE IS HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE'

I cannot have people I know hearing me say that. I just can't.

ItsOkayItsJustMyBreath · 28/06/2013 09:31

I would have gone on it as I think it would have served as a very good reminder to never do it again Wink

so pleased no one else witnessed my grey granny bra

MoominsYonisAreScary · 28/06/2013 09:37

I would! Don't think anyone would have wanted to see my last csection though, would put people right off!
